Winning Music Scholarships
Winning Music Scholarships

Do you have musical talent? Are you planning to attend college? You need to know about music scholarships and how to get them – especially if you will minor or major in musical studies of any nature in college. The competition for these scholarships for music can be fairly intent, and many are awarded through various contests. As a musical student, you are probably eligible for more music education scholarships than you may realize.

First, you must pay attention to the fact that music students have the highest GPAs and do the best on their SATs and other tests than non-music students do. Most music students receive more academic honors than other students, and this alone will make you eligible for countless random scholarships outside of the field of music as well. You need to take advantage of all of those random scholarship opportunities. As a music student, you are not limited to music scholarships alone. You are only limited to all of the scholarships that you are eligible for as a whole.

One of the first music scholarships that you need to apply for is the Attrus C. Fleming Music Scholarship, which is awarded in the amount of $1000 to a graduating high school senior who will attend college with music as a major or a minor. If you play an instrument, make sure that you enter the Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition. The winners of this competition are awarded $4500, $2000, and $1000.

You also need to seek out music scholarships that are more specific. Examples include music scholarships for veterans, for those who are disabled, for those who play the drum, for viola music, for music education, for composers, for church music, and more. Narrow down your musical type and field, and start looking for music scholarship opportunities that match, as this seriously narrows the competition, making it more feasible for you to win.

If you are applying specifically for music scholarships, you need to stand out from the crowd. Make sure that your applications are perfect in every way, and that samples of your music that must be submitted are as professional and clean as possible. Do not settle for any glitches in the recordings or anything of this nature. Always keep in mind that you have competition, and the competition will be just as good as and possibly even better than you are.

Make sure that you discuss scholarship opportunities with your music instructors. This may be a music teacher, choir director, band leader or other musical instructor. Often, they can recommend scholarship programs to you, and in some cases, they may recommend you for various scholarships. Make sure that you tap as many music organizations as you can for scholarship money as well.

Writing Scholarships for Poetry
Poetry Scholarships

If you love writing poetry, you may be eligible for numerous poetry writing scholarships. Many of these scholarships for poetry are merit or need based, but some are won, or lost, based on the results of poetry competitions. There are, however, some poetry scholarship opportunities that are overlooked. These poetry scholarships include the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund and The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, among others.

The Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund began in 2004, and it awards between $125,000 and $200,000 in scholarship awards each year. The deadline for entering the contest and your application occurs in October of each year. These awards are for lyric poems that celebrate the spirit of life. The work that you enter must be original, it must belong to you and be written by you, and it must be unpublished. As the author, you must be under the age of 40. This is an actual cash prize, as opposed to an actual scholarship, so the funds are disbursed to you, and not to your school. It’s the perfect scholarship because students can choose to spend this award any way they please.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are available for those students who are in grades between seven and twelve. There are about 50,000 regional winners and 400 national winners in a variety of genres each year. If you are seeking a this writing scholarship, however, you should be a graduating high school senior, and you must submit between three and eight bodies of work for general writing or nonfiction writing. The deadline for entering varies from one region to another, so you will need to find out what the deadline is for your specific region. The amount of the awards vary, but the organization awards approximately $3.9 million annually.

There is literally thousands of writing contests held each year that result in cash prizes, but it is vital that you pay attention to what the awards are, how they are disbursed, and the requirements for each poetry contest. Typically, your work must be original and not used for any other contest. This means a lot of poetry writing on your part. In most cases, you will be required to submit more than one poem, and in some cases, even if it isn’t required, you will want to submit more than one body of work to increase your odds of winning the contest and the prize money.

While poetry may be your main focus, as a writer, you need to enter as many different writing contests as possible, if there is a scholarship or cash prize offered. Due to the high cost of college, you simply cannot afford to miss out on any opportunities, and one of the great things about applying for poetry writing scholarships and entering contests, is that scholarships can be used to pay for your education, while prize money can be used to pay for education or living expenses. This is the perfect scholarship as you can find today.

Finding University and College Cheerleading Scholarships

Finding university and college cheerleading scholarships isn’t really very easy and few organizations offer scholarships for cheerleaders.

Finding college and university cheer scholarships
Cheerleading Scholarships

Finding university and college cheerleading scholarships isn’t really very easy. Although some organizations offer scholarships for high school cheerleaders to help them pay for their college education, there are actually very few organizations that do this – and there are millions of cheerleaders who want to go to college. There are also competitions that offer cheerleader scholarships to those who win or place well, however, hundreds of cheerleaders attend these competitions – all hoping for those college cheerleading scholarships. Here are some tips that may help you to achieve university cheerleading scholarships.

1. Start working towards a scholarship very early, if possible. You need to make the cheerleading squad in your high school as a freshman. Hopefully, before that, you have been a cheerleader, and you are also enrolled in gymnastic classes and possibly dance classes as well. The more talented you are, the more likely you are to obtain a cheerleading scholarship. Note that there are also scholarships available to high school students who show exceptional talent to help pay for gymnastic and dance lessons.

2. Don’t depend on talent alone to get you a cheerleaders scholarship. Of course, talent and skill play big roles, but academics are equally important for most cheerleading scholarships. You must be well-balanced, and have the ‘smarts’ to get into a good college as well. Keep up with your studies.

3. Be active in your community. This demonstrates community service and leadership qualities. Often in the case of college cheerleader tryouts, judges consider more than your skill and talent. There is often an interview process, where your community service and proof of your leadership qualities will be very important.

4. Choose your choice schools carefully. Make sure that they have scholarships for cheerleaders that make the squad, as this is always beneficial, and many colleges and universities actually have full tuition scholarships available for their cheerleaders.

5. Be ready to tryout. In the case of college cheerleading scholarships that are designated specifically for college cheerleaders, you must make the squad first – obviously. Find out far in advance about dates for tryouts and tryout requirements, as well as eligibility requirements.

6. Be a competitive cheerleader. The more awards that you’ve won for your cheerleading the more likely you are to make one of the college squads. Also realize that college cheerleaders usually also have many academic based awards as well.

7. Have a backup plan. Not all cheerleaders who desire cheer scholarships actually win them, or make the cheerleading squads in college. You need a backup plan for paying for your education in the event that you do not make a college cheerleading squad. Don’t allow anything to stop you from getting your college education – not even cheerleading.

8. Inquire into the college you wish to attend to see if they have an athletic scholarship that can be applied to cheerleading. Most colleges have money specifically set aside for athletic scholarships which would also include cheerleading. You may find that they also can advise you on other options for cheerleading financial aid that your college only has and cheerleaders can take advantage of it.

If you are a good cheerleader, with lots of talent, a good academic record, and a record for community service, you really can make a college level cheerleading squad, and take advantage of their cheerleading scholarships. At the same time, however, while you are in high school, you need to be participating in all competitions that you are eligible for – especially those that have scholarships as prizes.

NWSA Women Scholarships

If you are a woman looking for women scholarships you may find that the National Women’s Studies Association Scholarships (NWSA) and their book award prizes can help to cover some of the costs of your education. The National Women’s Studies Association, or NWSA, was founded in 1977 in an effort to progress the efforts of professionals in the field of Women’s Studies. While the organization was founded primarily for women, the members serve to eliminate discrimination and oppression for any group of people or individual who is being subjected in any way to such discrimination or oppression.

NWSA Scholarships for Women

The NWSA offers three programs of women scholarships and one conference registration scholarship/Travel grant program. Let’s take a closer look at all of them below.

NWSA Graduate Scholarship of $1,000 – awarded to a student who is in the research or writing stages of their Master’s Thesis or Ph.D. dissertation in the interdisciplinary field of women’s studies. It must be about women and it must promote the NWSA mission statement.

Lesbian Caucus Scholarship of $500.00 – given to that student who best echoes the mission and objectives of the NWSA and the Lesbian Caucus.

NWSA Women of Color Caucus Awards – $500.00 for each category of graduate students only. Categories are: African Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native descent – Latina descent – African descent – Asian/Asian-American/Pacific-Islander/ Arab/Middle East Asian descent

NWSA Conference Registration Scholarship and Travel Grant – 100 awards given only to graduate & doctoral students preferably with a demonstrated financial need and students who have not won this award previously and someone who exemplifies and supports the NWSA mission. June 1st is the application deadline.

NWSA Book Prizes

The NWSA has two book prize awards. The first is the National Women’s Studies Association Sara Whaley Book Prize. Each year, two $2000 awards are made, but the awards are based on books. Specifically, awards are made to the author’s of books that concern women and labor. To be eligible for this award, you must have a book that was published within the previous year.

Of the two awards, one is given to a senior scholar who must have two books in publication. The other is awarded to a junior scholar who is on the verge of publishing. This award is usually given to women of color within the United States, or women of color of International origins. The deadline for applying for this scholarship is in early May of each year.

The second book prize or women’s scholarship offered is the National Women’s Studies Association Gloria E. Anzaldua Book Prize. The guidelines are essentially the same for both awards, in that the selection is based on merit, and you must have a book based on women’s studies that is published. The award for the NWSA Gloria E. Anzaldua Book Prize is a $1000 and lifetime membership in the NWSA. The deadline for this program is also early May of each year.

When you apply, you must submit your application, along with five copies of your book. Despite the fact that you are sending copies of your book, you must also supply the selection committee with information that includes the title of your book, the ISBN number, the year the book was published, a single page CV, and a 50 to 100 word abstract of the book.

It is important to realize that these scholarships for women are not limited to women who are members of the LGBT community at all, but that they are possibilities for women who belong to that community, especially if they are African-American, or have an International Heritage. It is also important to understand that while these awards can be used to help pay for school, this is in no way required. These programs are ideal for graduate students who are working towards a career in women’s studies.

Graduate Psychology Scholarships for Research

The APF/COGDOP have combined to create graduate psychology scholarships for research so students in the field of psychology can do their research thesis.

Research graduate psychology scholarships
Psychology Scholarships for Research

The American Psychological Foundation and the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology have combined to create graduate psychology scholarships for students in the field of psychology. Each year, the APF/COGDOP offers thirteen scholarships for research to these graduate students, with varying amounts.

The APF and the COGDOP are two separate organizations. The APF or the American Psychological Foundation is an organization that exists for the purpose of providing financial support for research in the field of psychology. The organization has existed since 1953. The COGDOP or Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology has been in operation since 1963. This organization was formed in an effort to promote careers in psychology, and it allows members to discuss the field and to receive advanced research and education in the field.

The graduate research scholarship fund offered by these two organizations awards varying amounts each year. It is also important to note that the fund is comprised of thirteen different psychology scholarships, which is why there are thirteen awards made annually. The amounts depend on how much is in the fund for each research scholarship. In 2010, one winner will receive a $5000 award through these two organizations, but the award is actually from the Harry and Miriam Levinson Scholarship Fund. Another graduate student will receive $3000 from the Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship Fund. Eleven other awards will be made in varying amounts from different programs within the same fund.

In order to be eligible, you must be a student in a master’s program or doctoral program. If you are currently enrolled in a master’s program, however, it must be your intention to enroll in a PhD program in the future. The purpose of these graduate psychology scholarships for research is not to pay for your education, but instead to pay for the cost of research through your graduate program. Additionally, you cannot just opt to apply for the program. Instead, you must be nominated by your department head, and your department of psychology must be a member of the COGDOP.

Because these research scholarships for psychology are used to cover the expenses of research, as opposed to the cost of education, you must also submit a research proposal, and this proposal plays a huge role in the selection of the winners of the available awards.

The deadline for applying for the APF/COGDOP Graduate Research Scholarship is June 30th of each year. On this date, all materials must be submitted to the committee that will select the award winners, and failure to have all requested documents in by this date will make you ineligible for any of the awards. The materials that must be submitted include the application form, a letter of recommendation from your graduate research advisor, an outline of your thesis or dissertation, curriculum vitae, and an official transcript.

LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF)

If you are a Hispanic student getting ready to enroll or already enrolled in college consider the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) to help pay some of your tuition.

LNSF Scholarship Fund
LNSF Scholarship

If you are a Hispanic student getting ready to enroll or already enrolled in college consider the LULAC National Scholarship Fund to help pay some of your tuition. The LNSF was established in 1962 based on a local LULAC councils outreach program aimed at funding the hopes for higher education of disadvantaged and yet gifted minority students. The branch was in San Francisco and the results so astounding that the National branch of LULAC wrote a grant proposal aimed at securing funds to operate this program on a national level.

The grant application was successful and as soon as LULAC was notified the entity LNESC was founded to administer the awards. LNESC is a separate legal entity from LULAC and answers to its own board of directors.

The organization LULAC stands for League of Untied Latin American Citizens and was started over 80 years ago as groups of Mexican and Latin American suffering from discrimitory practices banded together to achieve some equality. LULAC has been a strong voice for Hispanics seeking educational and employment equality as well as encouraging equal civil participation by Latin American citizens. LULAC successfully brought suit against Orange County to integrate the Hispanic population into the school system in 1945. LULAC brought suit against the state of Texas on behalf of Mexican Americans protesting the fact that none had ever been called to jury duty within the state.

In their quest for a more equitable life for Hispanics in America LULAC became aware of the need for financial support for economically disadvantaged students hoping to attend college or university within the US. The small start made in San Francisco grew into a national movement which is still based in local Councils.

LULAC awards range from $250.00 to 2, 500.00 per year and a total of $750,000 awarded annually. These are based on scholastic achievement as well as the desire and sincerity of the individual student to achieve a degree. The greatest amounts are awarded to students who qualify with exceptional scholastic achievements. General awards however depend as much upon economic need and desire for an education as they do upon scholastic performance.

The LULAC Scholarship fund only awards minority Hispanic students who are legal US Citizens and who are currently enrolled or have applied to enroll in an accredited college or university within the United States. They must be working toward a degree; it can be an Associate, Bachelor or Post Secondary education degree.

Funds are disbursed from the LULAC National Scholarship Fund to the individual councils and are given to the recipients by July 15th if the award amount is under $500.00. When the LULAC scholarship award amount is greater than $500.00 the funds are disbursed in two equal payments on July 15th and January 15th and then given to the recipients. Allowable expenses are food, books, tuition, tutoring, room and board and other college related expenses. The deadline for the LULAC scholarship application was March 31st 2010. LULAC scholarship awards are made yearly and will be available for the 2011 year.

General Electric has also partnered with the LULAC National Educational Service Centers to provide scholarship monies for exceptional minority students so as to help in completing their college education. Business and engineering must be studied by minority students who are granted these GE/LULAC Scholarships. Sophomores’ right through seniors in college can apply and there will be two $5,000 GE LULAC scholarships awarded yearly.

You can get started to see if you’re eligible for the LULAC National Scholarship by going to the LULAC Scholarship application which is online. Once a LULAC scholarship is granted the monies will be given to the individual’s local LULAC council.

Finding College Scholarships for Mothers

Various companies and educational facilities around the country offer their version of scholarships for Mothers; especially single Mothers.

Mother Scholarships for college
Mother Scholarships

There was a time when scholarships were basically limited to High School Seniors and nobody else. Thankfully, times have changed and now scholarships are offered for a variety of different reasons and are available to an ensemble of groups and individuals. One of those special groups of people is Mothers. Various companies and educational facilities around the country offer their version of college scholarships for Mothers –  especially single Mothers. If you are a single Mom and have custody of your child or children; then you are almost guaranteed to get some financial assistance towards your college education.

Just about every college or university has their own version of “Mother “Scholarships.” It is hard enough to pay for a college education today, let alone be a single Mother with children. Every educational facility will have a specific set of criteria that will have to be met. In addition, the amount of the scholarship or award will differ from educational facility to educational facility. The important fact to be known is; there are financial opportunities for those single mothers who want the assistance. Let’s take a look at just a few of the schools that offer single mother scholarships.

  1. Florida George Snow Scholarship Fund Scholarships for Single Parents– This scholarship has paid out more than $3,500,000 to over 900 students in needs over the years. They have over 47 different scholarship programs. Some of those are geared towards single Mothers.
  2. Minnesota State University Coplan Donohue Single Parent Scholarship- This is not a financial need based scholarship. This program offers $1,000 in financial assistance to those single Mothers who demonstrate a commitment to parenting and are going to fulfill their educational commitment at Minnesota State University. The Mother should have 30 completed semester credits and be a U.S. Citizen. Those Mothers interested can fill out the Coplan Donohue Single Parent Scholarship Form and submit an essay describing your beliefs on Motherhood and also listing your future goals. You will also need 3 letters of reference and your transcripts.
  3. Wisconsin – The University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Single Parent Scholarships- Here they offer 5 different scholarships for mothers geared towards helping Moms. The criteria and award varies between $500 and $1,000.

General Mother Scholarships

In general, a Mother will not find it hard to find financial aid if they want to pursue post high school education. Just about every state has some type of support for this situation. Another place to turn is the government. The government had dedicated a portion of the Stimulus Package money to helping Mothers go back to school. There are some companies and organizations that are awarding $10,000 mother scholarships and then there are great Pell Grants as well. Unlike student loans; these do not have to be repaid. If you are a Mother and you want to get the education you could not afford; or couldn’t complete because you had children; there are good mom scholarship programs and mother financial college assistance out there to assist you.

Many large companies do provide these unique scholarships in order to increase their business. Search their websites and find the weird scholarship that best suits you along with something unique you have or do which is rare even if it is somewhat corny. If you do – search for it. • Scholarships for short people and tall people.
  • If you can turn wool into a winter sweater, then you could win a unique scholarship based on the style, design, presentations and creativity.
  • Take a picture of yourself while having a milk moustache. Apart from this photo, write an essay on how healthy your body became by drinking the milk. It’s definitely a positive theme, but this is one of those strange scholarships you can get.
  • Predict the future on the share market and get a nice unusual scholarship to go with it.
  • Last name scholarships
  • First generation scholarships
  • Oldest born scholarships
  • Bug or insect scholarships
  • Milk scholarships

  • Duck calling scholarships
  • Where can I apply for left hand scholarships

In conclusion, there are many weird scholarships that make things a lot more interesting in the world of education. Not everything that concerns learning must be serious (and I’m not talking about the college dorm life). Until you get to the part of having fun, you must do everything in your power to make your life easier by getting an odd scholarship. Think about what makes you stand out and what separates you from the rest of the crowd. After you’ve found it, try searching more about that unique thing about you and see if you can use it to your advantage. Try your best to make some educational money from that strange and unique feature you have in you!

The Ed E. and Gladys Hurley Foundation Scholarship are offered to 100-150 theology students. This Christian scholarship is available for under-graduates as well as graduate students. The amount offered is $1,000. However, this scholarship is offered to students of select states only. Hence, you will have to check whether you are eligible for this Christian college scholarship before you plan your education. Another requirement is that you will have to major in Theology. That is pretty obvious considering the fact that this is a scholarship for Christian students that we are talking about.

Another popular scholarship is the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons Student Ministry Scholarship. The amount is not fixed and varies between $500 and $1,000. This is an annual scholarship that is awarded to 30-36 Christian undergraduates or graduates. Again, the recipients of this Christian scholarship must major in theology.

The Mary E. Bivins Foundation offers up to $2,000 on an annual basis. This Foundation offers funding to 50-75 Christian students. An additional requirement here is that the student must attend a Texas college to become eligible for this scholarship in Christ.

The United Church of Christ offers Brown Scholarships. This little known scholarship for Christian students offers funding up to $10,000 on an annual basis. The students are required to seek pastoral degrees.

The Woman’s Missionary Union offers different Christian college scholarships for post-graduate work for students focusing on foreign missionary work and for children of international and North American missionaries. This ensures that those who have given their best years spreading the word of god do not have to compromise or sacrifice as far as their children’s education is concerned.

You can qualify and apply for all these Christian scholarships on an annual basis. You can use these unknown scholarships to fund your entire education. However, you will have to get good grades as most funding requirements are quite severe and applicants must have good grades. While this does not necessarily mean you should be brilliant, you certainly cannot expect funding when you are not even getting passing marks.

The internet is the best place to search and apply for a Christian scholarship of some kind because of the large number of them. You just have to keep track of sites that provide information on these college Christian scholarships grants and find out the due date and other procedural formalities involved. Not only that you have a number of Christian faiths and religions such as:

Baptist scholarships
Catholic scholarships
Episcopal scholarships
Lutheran scholarships
Methodist scholarships
Ministry scholarships
Presbyterian scholarships

Depending on your faith you can research that specific denomination. You can also research just “christian scholarships grants” which are unknown scholarships not affiliated to any Christian organized religion but just a church based on Christian beliefs only, which is any Christian faith. You may find more private organizations which have their own Christian scholarship program and they may tend to be unknown to most students and a little harder to seek out.

The career that follows a Christian education is for those who have a calling for it, especially in the ministry and not for everyone but for those whose heart has already made that decision.

The Dell Scholars Program - Dell Scholarship
Dell Scholars Program

The Dell Scholars Program is sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. This Dell scholarship is not based on merit but rather on need. The Dell Scholars program was not created to examine grades as much as the people who earn them. Students who faced challenges in life trying to achieve their educational goals and endured builds character. They become role models in their community and can make a huge difference in the lives of people around them. At least that is how the Dell Scholars Program looks at things. It is for this reason that the foundation has issued over 300 Dell scholarships in the last 6 years at the tune of around $31 million dollars.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation truly believes that excellence does begin in High School; but it is not simply based on academic scores; but rather on the goals and attitude of those students who are striving to make a difference. The Dell Foundation does support a college readiness program to help prepare High School seniors for the next educational level. The foundation is sincere in their belief that education opens doors and allows each adult to reach their full capability.

The Dell Scholars Program goes above and beyond financial aide. This program offers mentoring and leadership services that prepare, guide and assist a scholar through 6 years of educational bliss. The Dell scholarship award of $20,000 is only a small part of what the Dell Foundation offers its scholars. To qualify a student must have participated in a two year college readiness program sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. They have to be in their graduation year and have a grade point average of at least 2.4.

In addition; the prospective student has to be in need of financial support. They have to show need and be in the process of entering a 4 year degree program. Furthermore; they have to be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal alien. The foundation looks at the application very closely. They look to see what the student’s ambition in life is. They want to know if the student has goals and if they do; what their plan to make them a reality is. They are looking to see how well the student can explain the challenges they have faced or are presently confronting. They want to see applicants with motivation and determination and of course to see if you can show you truly need the financial assistance.

The Dell scholarship is geared towards students who know what they want; and know how they are going to get there. It is designed for those students who strive on hard work and the rewards that result from it. That is what the foundation looks for in prospective students and that is pretty good criteria to live by. The application process for the Dell Scholarship Program opens in November and closes the following January 15th.

Google Anita Borg Scholarship for Female Students

The Google Anita Borg Scholarship for female students benefits women the most of all Google scholarships. Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship for women is global.

 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship
Google Anita Borg Scholarship

If you are a female, Google might help you pay for your college education. While Google has many different Google Scholarships available, the Google scholarship that benefits female students the most is the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. The Anita Borg Scholarship for female students exists for the purpose of helping women who want to pursue an education and a career in the field of computer science or technology.

The Google Anita Borg Scholarship is available to students in the United States, as well as Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. Female students in these different countries are not competing for the Google scholarships with students from other countries. Instead, there is a separate Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship for each of these individual countries, and each has its own set of eligibility rules.

For example, the United States Anita Borg Scholarship requires students to be female, to be entering the senior year of an undergraduate program of study or to be a graduate student, to be enrolled in a computer science program, a computer engineering program, or to a technology related program of study, to be a full-time student, and to have and maintain a 3.5 GPA. Additionally, you must be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident of the United States, or an international student attending school in the United States in order to be eligible. You can apply if you have already applied in the past, even if you were a finalist.

This Borg scholarship award is worth $10,000, and it includes an all-expenses-paid invitation to the retreat that is held each year at the GooglePlex in Mountain View, California. The winners are chosen based on their academic background and leadership abilities.

The eligibility requirements are the same for every country that is represented by the Google Anita Borg Scholarship, with the exception that you must be attending a school in that specific country, and you must be a resident or citizen of that country.

It is important to realize that this particular Google scholarship for female students is not available for first year students, or any student who does not have at least senior status in an undergraduate program. However, there is an Anita Borg Google First Years Scholarship available that could help you.

The First Years scholarship program is designed for students who are currently high school seniors, about to enter their first year of college. Winners are selected based on their academic background, their community service, their leadership abilities, and their level of interest in computer science. The award amount is $10,000, and these students will also be invited to the GooglePlex retreat. The application process for this Google Anita Borg scholarship is a bit longer, requiring multiple essays and letters of reference – which shouldn’t be any surprise, or any bother considering the size of the award. Although no set number of winners has been announced, Google makes multiple awards of all of the Anita Borg Memorial Scholarships, with each winner being awarded $10,000. Because of the high amount, this Google scholarship is not renewable, and if you win the Borg scholarship for female students, you cannot reapply.

While the amounts of these scholarships may vary from program to program, the majority of the scholarships from Google are worth up to $10,000 each – which will go a long way towards getting a higher education paid for.

There are also Google Scholarships for Conference Travel Expense, although these scholarships do not make you automatically eligible for the Google Retreat. These travel scholarships pay the travel and boarding expenses for specific conferences, which include the Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference, the Google Travel Scholarship for the AISES National Conference and the Google Women of Color Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference.

The GooglePlex Retreat, or Google Fuse (the latest retreat), allows students to form networks that will allow them to share research information, academic information, and industry information and opportunities for many years. This retreat also allows those who are employed by Google to connect with the future generation of computer scientists, to impart important industry information to them, and to see what the future generation has to offer as well. Students are also able to further explore career opportunities in the field of computer science.

While the GooglePlex retreat is usually held in Mountain View, California, it can also be held in New York City, New York. The retreat can last as little as two days and approximately fifty students will win an invitation to the retreat – other than the Google college scholarship winners, who are automatically invited. The length of time, the number of attendees, and the location of the event can vary from year to year. For more information on the GooglePlex Retreat go to 2010 Google Fuse. Remember that even if you did not win any of the Google Scholarships, you can still apply to attend the Google Plex Retreat, although you may be responsible for paying the expenses of attending yourself.

ACE Scholarships sre Unusual Scholarships
ACE Scholarships

Any help that you can receive to assist you in paying for your college education is very important, and all opportunities should be fully explored. When you are searching for unusual scholarships, you may see ACE Scholarships, and make the mistake of thinking that you’ve already applied, when in fact; there is more than one unique ACE Scholarship.

First there is the Alliance for Choice in Education. Based in Denver, Colorado, this organization offers an ACE scholarship program that is specifically for students in grades between Kindergarten and the twelfth grade. It exists for the purposes of helping families to pay for tuition at private schools, but is only available to those families that qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. The program only pays up to $2000 annually for the lower grades and up to $3000 annually for students in grades nine through twelve.

In order to be eligible for this particular ACE Scholarship, you must reside in Colorado, and attend a school in Colorado. Once these unique scholarships are awarded; it is renewed each year for up to four years, as long as you remain eligible. You must have a good academic standing in order to remain eligible and you must remain in a private school in Colorado, although you do have the freedom to change schools, as long as the new school is still a private school, and still in the state. Note that the award amount for this unusual scholarship is only meant to pay for approximately 50% of the tuition, which means that if the tuition is low, the award amount could be lower, as it will not exceed 50% of the cost of the tuition. You can learn more about the Alliance for Choice in Education Scholarship details and apply by going to ACE Scholarships.

Another of the ACE Scholarships that you should be aware of is the unusual college scholarships offered by the Ace Communications Group and Ace Link Telecommunications. This ACE scholarship is only available to high school seniors who have telephone service provided through Ace Link Telecommunications in their homes. Fifteen ACES scholarships are awarded each year, and they are non-renewable.

The award amount of each one of these ACE scholarships is $1000. Ace Link Telecommunications is available in Michigan, Iowa, and Minnesota. Aside from this unique eligibility rule, you must also be a graduating high school senior, and be enrolled or accepted to a college or university. If you or an immediate family member is an employee of Ace, you are not eligible.

Another unique thing about this particular scholarship is that although you must be a high school senior to apply, the award is actually not paid until you are starting your second year of college. It is paid during the first semester of the second year, and it will not be paid, regardless of winning it, if you have not maintained at least a 2.5GPA during your first year. In order for the award to be paid, winners must submit their college transcript reflecting that they have maintained an acceptable GPA, and they must also prove that they have registered in college for the second year of study. Learn more and apply at ACE scholarship.

There is one more unusual scholarship that you will run into when searching for ACE Scholarships. This is the Access College Early Scholarship Program. These unique scholarships for low income students is made possible by the Nebraska Access College Early Scholarship Program Act of 2007. This unusual scholarship will pay the college tuition and mandatory fees for low-income students who want to take dual college classes while they are still in high school. It will also be awarded to those low-income students who have early enrollment agreements with a college. The student must either be eligible for other programs designed for low-income families, or the student’s family must have had a recent hardship that would make the student eligible for this ACE scholarship.

Dual enrollment means that the student is still in high school, but they are also enrolled in college courses. The college courses may be conducted at the high school, or at the college, but they typically take place during the regular school day, and most students in dual programs usually just take a couple of college courses, along with their regular high school courses. The student must have room in their schedule for these courses, in terms of credits needed to graduate from high school, because high school credits are not given for the college courses. Learn more about the Access College Early Scholarship Program and apply to these unusual scholarships at ACE Scholarships.

When you are looking for ACE Scholarships read the information carefully to ensure that you are applying for the ACE scholarship that you meant to apply for – and that you are applying for the scholarship that relates to your specific circumstances or situation, with the knowledge that there are several unique and unusual ACE Scholarships available. These scholarships offer exceptional opportunities for the serious students.

John Carey Accounting Scholarship for Graduate Students

The John L Carey accounting scholarship is available for graduate students who are enrolled in programs of study that will bring them into the accounting field.

Accounting Scholarship for Graduate Students
John Carey Accounting Scholarship

The John L Carey accounting scholarship is available for graduate students who are enrolled in programs of study that will bring them into the accounting field. Established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1969, the CPA accounting scholarship was created in honor of John L Carey, who was instrumental in the success and continuity of the organization.

There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the John Carey graduate accounting scholarships. They are only offered to graduate students who already hold degrees in liberal arts, or to students who have degrees in a non-business field. There is a great deal of competition for these accounting scholarships, as only ten are awarded each year.

While you will not be required to enter the field of accounting upon graduation, it is important to note that when the award winners are selected, that selection is based on the probability that you will become a CPA, and the eligibility requirements also require you to be enrolled in a graduate accounting program. Additionally, the graduate program that you are enrolling in must be accredited by ACBSP or AACSP International. If you have already started your graduate accounting program, you are not eligible for these accounting scholarships.

You must be pursuing CPA certification, be a full time graduate student, and a United States Citizen to be eligible. Eligible non-citizens can also apply. In order to be an eligible non-citizen of the United States, you must hold a green card. It is also vital that you understand that in order to be eligible for the John L Carey scholarships for accounting that you can not have completed more than twelve semester hours in accounting or business courses while obtaining your under graduate degree.

If you are awarded a coveted Carey scholarship, you will receive $5000, which will typically be sent directly to your school for disbursement. The John Carey scholarship in accounting is considered to be renewable, so if you have satisfactory academic performance, and you will be obtaining another year of graduate study in the appropriate field, you can be awarded an additional $5000 for that second year.

Your application must be postmarked by April 1st, without exception. Once your application is received, a committee will review it, and will choose the ten winners who have shown the best academic achievement. Leadership qualities are also considered, as is the probability that you will enter the accounting field upon finishing your education. Winners are typically notified by August.

Again, the competition is stiff for these limited awards, but if you meet the requirements for eligibility, you definitely need to apply for this accounting scholarship. $5000 goes a long way towards helping to pay for an education, and these are funds that do not have to be repaid. Applications for this AICPA scholarship are available at their website.

Finally, even if you meet all of the eligibility requirements for the John Carey Scholarships in accounting, if you are an employee or member of the AICPA, or a family member of a staff member or employee, you are not eligible for the AICPA scholarship for accounting students.

The West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-State Student Excellence), administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is a WV PROMISE scholarship program designed especially for the scholars from West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship program provides West Virginia high school graduates a scholarship to a state college or university in West Virginia or an equivalent amount to an in-state private college. The PROMISE scholarship program was begun by Governor Bob Wise and the Legislature in 2001. Annually the program distributes more than $42 million to the various talented minds of the state.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, established for monitoring the educational needs in the West Virginia state, manages the higher education institutes to ensure that the policies are implemented and the smooth functioning of the public policy agenda for the state’s four year colleges and universities. According to the US 2000 Survey, only 14.8% of West Virginia residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree – compared to 24.4% in the US as a whole. Providing various scholarship programs to ensure better access to education for the state students is one of the major objectives of the organization. One such scholarship is the WV PROMISE Scholarship and more than 9,000 students have benefited from this West Virginia PROMISE scholarship in the year 2008-09. The funds for the WV PROMISE scholarship are provided from video lottery and other appropriations.

The PROMISE scholarship requirements are that it’s available to all the High School graduates, Home Schooled students and college students (renewal) from the state of West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship award for a student enrolled in a state institution of higher education shall be equal to the actual tuition and mandatory fee charges or resident students at the institution. Eligible 2010 high school graduates will receive annual awards valued at the lesser of tuition and mandatory fees or $4,750 at the West Virginia public or private college they choose to attend. The list of eligible institutes is available on the website. Out-of-state colleges and universities are not recognized and hence the institutes recognized by the scholarship are limited. The online application opens from November 2009 and needs to be completed before March 01, 2010. The selection process verifies the merit of the applicants and accordingly the deserving applicants are chosen. Various educational qualifications are included for selecting the recipients. The WV PROMISE scholarships can be renewed for eight consecutive semesters and can be transferred from one institute to another as well.

While nearly 73% of the West Virginia students graduate from high-school only 58% of the graduating seniors attend college for further studies. One of the reasons for the lower number is the financial overhead for attending college. Added to the fact that middle income group has limited opportunities for qualifying for low-income scholarships. The need to have the WV PROMISE scholarship for rewarding students is definitely there.

A Merit based PROMISE scholarship ensures that the exceptional performance is recognized and motivated to continue further. The message provided by the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship is pretty clear – earn the opportunity to attend college and work towards “Reaching for Greater Goals”.
