These grants and scholarships are awarded to outstanding students on the basis of academic merit, financial need or both. Unlike some scholarship grant programs, students may receive multiple scholarships through this program. Students who receive a University of Iowa scholarship will not be disqualified if they also receive additional need-based loans or grants.

The University of Iowa campus is located near the beautiful downtown area of Iowa City, which is known for being student-oriented and pedestrian-friendly. The school offers a variety of sports, social events and lovely scenery. Students attending the school can enjoy concerts, live theater, guest lectures, museums, art exhibits and bookstores; all without the need to ever leave campus. The school also offers easy access to a variety of activities. Kinnick Stadium is only three blocks away and the Iowa River is located one block from the school. Among the University of Iowa scholarships grants available are scholarships for first-year students, those students who are entering the university directly from high school, as well as scholarships for transfer students who are transferring to the school from another college or university. In addition, the university offers several scholarships specifically for international students, whether they are first-year or transfer students. Along with these scholarships, there are also additional scholarships that are offered by various academic departments and colleges at the University of Iowa.

The Iowa Heritage Award is for non-resident students entering the university who have a parent, grandparent, step-parent, legal guardian or grandparent who graduated from the university. The scholarship has a value of $1,500 and is renewable. The deadline to apply for the spring semester is December 7th and the deadline to apply for the summer and fall semester is May 4th.

The Iowa Community College Transfer Academic scholarship is for students who transfer to the university from a community college in Iowa and who have earned 30 semester hours by the time of their application. The value of this scholarship is $1,000 and is renewable. There are 35 awards available based upon highest grade point average. Applications must be submitted by October 1st for the spring semester and by March 1st for the summer or fall semester.

The Presidential Scholarship Program consists of two award tiers. The top twenty candidates who receive the Presidential Scholarship as well as the Old Gold Scholarship will receive a combined value of $13,000 per year for a total of up to four years and $52,000. As many as 350 applicants in the second candidate tier will be awarded the Old Gold Scholarship, worth $3,000 per year for up to four years. Both of these scholarships require applicants to have an ACT composite score of at least 30 or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of at least 1330. Candidates must also have a GPA of at least 3.8. The deadline to apply for fall is the prior December.

The Dean Gerhard Loewenberg Scholarship is for the top-ranking alternate candidate in the Presidential Scholarship competition who is also majoring in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences programs. The value of this scholarship ranges between $1,000 and $2,500. This is a one-time scholarship award for first-year students only. It is not renewable and only one award will be given.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Excellence Award is for selected Old Gold Scholars who major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This scholarship is worth between $1,000 and $2,000. There are five awards available. These University of Iowa scholarships grants are not renewable.

Lowe’s offers about $600,000 in scholarships to students annually. They offer many scholarships on community levels too. As a result, you are often competing for them on a regional level. That means your chances of being awarded such a scholarship by Lowe’s is huge. Each year they offer 140 Lowe scholarships to those that are high school seniors and plan to enroll in a full time undergraduate study at an accredited college. Students must have at least a 3.25 GPA, show work experience, show leadership, and show community involvement.

The Carl Buchanan Lowe’s scholarships are for $5,000 each. They are awarded to 50 high school seniors that will be attending an undergraduate study program at an accredited college. This particular Lowe scholarship though is only offered to part time or full time employees of Lowe’s. Dependents of employees are also eligible to apply.

Applicants also need to have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and show some experience with work, volunteering, leadership, and community projects. Lowe’s scholarships can be used for two year colleges, four year colleges, and technical schools. The funds can be used for books, tuition, fees, supplies, and labs.

Students can apply each year for a Lowe’s scholarship, but they aren’t renewable. This means if you are awarded one it won’t automatically mean you can get those funds the next year. You have to complete a new Lowes scholarship application. It is possible for students to transfer colleges and receive funds through the Lowe’s scholarship program. It is recommended to contact them for such details about how to do so.

All winners of Lowe’s scholarships also make a commitment to help with promoting mathematics to students in the grades of kindergarten through 12th grade. To do this, all winners agree to volunteer at a local school to mentor in that area for a period of time not less than 2 hours per week.

The amount of money that a recipient will earn through a Lowe’s scholarship depends on several variables. This includes their financial situation and their academic enrollment costs. The scholarships range in award from $1,000 to $3,000 per winner.

Though this program does not offer as much as the Chevening St. Andrews scholarship program, it does cut a decent amount of money out of the overall cost of a post-graduate degree, and students would be foolish not to try for a chance. All application materials are due no later than March 26 of a given year.

The University of St. Andrews School of Medicine provides a university scholarship through the Danuta Richardson Medical Program. This fantastic program covers a student’s full amount of tuition costs while also providing a 12,000 pound yearly stipend for up to three years of education. Because the program is open to exceptional candidates who may begin school at different times, this St. Andrews scholarship has no set deadline and students should contact the medical department directly for full details. That being said, students are expected to have an exceptional record and be interested in research pertaining to biophotonics, immunology, virology, cancer biology, neuroscience, molecular genetics or health psychology.

Every year Wingate St. Andrews scholarships are awarded, largely to post doctoral students, to those looking to continue their research and education. This medical scholarship is designed to fund all of or part of a research project, depending on a projected budget. In order to be eligible for this St. Andrews Scholarship students will need to be residing in and a citizen of the United Kingdom. Citizens of other EU countries may be eligible to apply if they have been residents of the UK for at least three years. All applicants must be over the age of 24 and be able to show proof of financial need. The deadline for this program is February 1.

Many bursary programs are available specifically to citizens of a given country, and are normally available through specific institutions. Scholarships, although being much more open and aimed at a broad audience, can sometimes be restrictive in who is awarded and what areas they may have come from. The Commonwealth Scholarship Program in sharp contrast is specifically designed with the international student in mind. Commonwealth scholarships are offered around the world through an organization called the Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan which was conceived and implemented at the 1959 Commonwealth education conference. Its goal is to establish scholarship programs in individual Commonwealth nations available to students from other countries.

Though the Commonwealth scholarship is not available across the board for all member nations, it is available in 12 including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, India and Malaysia. Initially these programs were created to fund primarily students pursuing graduate studies but it has since been opened up in many countries to include undergraduate students as well. These Commonwealth scholarship programs are hotly sought after and considered highly competitive, so students should plan carefully before application and make sure they have provided the best information they possibly can to put themselves in the best light.

In many ways, the application process for commonwealth college scholarships has advanced and simplified since 1959. For some countries, a single electronic application system is available for all interested applicants, though this has not been implemented in all nations equally. It is useful to know that there is no single commonwealth scholarship plan available, but rather these programs are designed and implemented by individual countries. Because of this, though easier now than in days past, the commonwealth scholarship programs are still rather complicated and students will need to take their time when reviewing scholarships they may apply to.

Applications may be restricted to certain nations in the commonwealth, or they may be broadly available to all member states. Other programs may be available only for graduate or undergraduate students, and eligibility criteria will vary by specific scholarship. Further, it is also important to know that not all programs are scholarships, and that some are designed as fellowships which are a completely different category. The basic message in this is simple: review available programs very carefully and make sure that they are applicable to your interests and financial needs.

Many of these scholarships by Commonwealth are offered through exchange programs, so an important step in gaining access to them is to first check with your university to see if such a program exists. If a students’ institution does not offer such an exchange program they will be ineligible for a number of the scholarships, though this should not stop them as there are many more that will still be available. A good example of such a program is the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship which, while prefers students be enrolled in an existing exchange program, accepts applicants from many different institutions. Students at a college who do not have an exchange program with a college in Canada may begin the process at home, encouraging their university to generate such an arrangement with the student’s chosen destination. Successful applicants to this specific program can receive up to $10,000 to cover travel, living costs and other financial needs while staying in Canada. While the 2010 awards have been given out already, the Canadian 2011 Commonwealth Scholarship Program is expected to announce a new competition for 2011 in the near future.

Commonwealth scholarship programs are a useful way for international students to find financial aid to continue their studies abroad. It may require a little footwork on the part of the student, but the rewards can be enormous. Further, their legwork where exchange programs do not currently exist may facilitate future students in gaining access to these awards, so their efforts are important across the board.

Again, it is important to remember that these programs are highly competitive, so students who apply should have a sincere passion for the work they are doing. Their applications should display their passions, and in all hopes they will find themselves awarded handsomely for their interests.

The real money comes in if you win the National Finals. The National Champion receives $20,000. The runner up gets $10,000. The third place winner gets $5,000. Those chosen 4th through 12th will receive $1,000 and the schools of top twelve will get $500 each. The Benjamin Gilman Scholarship Program, (an international study abroad scholarship) which is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, rewards those applicants majoring in only a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) program. The main objective of the program is to financially assist US undergraduate students planning to study abroad. The Gilman scholarships are provided to those applicants who are planning to apply or have been accepted into a study abroad program recognized by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the US. The Gilman international scholarship cycle for summer 2010 is a pilot for the STEM fields. It presents a scholarship opportunity program second to none for college students.

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs – ECA (http://exchanges.state.gov) works towards enabling mutual understanding between the people of the US and the people of the other countries. This mission is accomplished through nternational education exchange programs with more than 160 countries. ECA has over 1 million program alumni around the world, including more than 40 Nobel Laureates and more than 300 current and former heads of state and government. The total investment done under the international exchange program in 2008 was more than $1.5 billion.

The Gilman scholarship for summer 2010 has been changed to a Pilot for the STEM fields of study. For the year 2010-11, 125 scholarships are to be awarded to the students studying abroad during the summer of 2010. Each study abroad scholarship will be up to $5,000 and the average Gilman scholarship award would be $3,000. The major criteria for application are as below:

Applicant should be receiving or would have been approved to receive the Federal Pell Grant – grant provided for the low-income applicants for education.
Applicant should be attending a program that is recognized in the US.
Minimum 28 days of study in one country (selected countries as per list).

The applications are to be done online either in Oct 2009 or in April 2010. However the date needs to be confirmed on the website. The program’s objective is to assist students from a diverse range of colleges and universities including, but not limited to: two and four-year public and private colleges, Tribal Colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions and other Minority-Serving Institutions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. It provides scholarship opportunities to those sections and communities of the society that would have not visited any foreign country due to financial constraints. The program encourages diversity and hence one of the selection guideline is the diverse background of the applicant as well.

International education exchange programs allow students from various countries to interact and share information and knowledge with each other. West Virginia Promise Scholarship Program

West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship administered by the Higher Education Policy Commission is a PROMISE scholarship program designed especially for WV scholars.

The West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-State Student Excellence), administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is a WV PROMISE scholarship program designed especially for the scholars from West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship program provides West Virginia high school graduates a scholarship to a state college or university in West Virginia or an equivalent amount to an in-state private college. The PROMISE scholarship program was begun by Governor Bob Wise and the Legislature in 2001. Annually the program distributes more than $42 million to the various talented minds of the state.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, established for monitoring the educational needs in the West Virginia state, manages the higher education institutes to ensure that the policies are implemented and the smooth functioning of the public policy agenda for the state’s four year colleges and universities. According to the US 2000 Survey, only 14.8% of West Virginia residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree – compared to 24.4% in the US as a whole. Providing various scholarship programs to ensure better access to education for the state students is one of the major objectives of the organization. One such scholarship is the WV PROMISE Scholarship and more than 9,000 students have benefited from this West Virginia PROMISE scholarship in the year 2008-09. The funds for the WV PROMISE scholarship are provided from video lottery and other appropriations.

The PROMISE scholarship requirements are that it’s available to all the High School graduates, Home Schooled students and college students (renewal) from the state of West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship award for a student enrolled in a state institution of higher education shall be equal to the actual tuition and mandatory fee charges or resident students at the institution. Eligible 2010 high school graduates will receive annual awards valued at the lesser of tuition and mandatory fees or $4,750 at the West Virginia public or private college they choose to attend. The list of eligible institutes is available on the website. Out-of-state colleges and universities are not recognized and hence the institutes recognized by the scholarship are limited. The online application opens from November 2009 and needs to be completed before March 01, 2010. The selection process verifies the merit of the applicants and accordingly the deserving applicants are chosen. Various educational qualifications are included for selecting the recipients. The WV PROMISE scholarships can be renewed for eight consecutive semesters and can be transferred from one institute to another as well.

While nearly 73% of the West Virginia students graduate from high-school only 58% of the graduating seniors attend college for further studies. One of the reasons for the lower number is the financial overhead for attending college. Added to the fact that middle income group has limited opportunities for qualifying for low-income scholarships. The need to have the WV PROMISE scholarship for rewarding students is definitely there.

A Merit based PROMISE scholarship ensures that the exceptional performance is recognized and motivated to continue further. The message provided by the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship is pretty clear – earn the opportunity to attend college and work towards “Reaching for Greater Goals”.
