This is a nice award for students to put on their resume’.

But who is the The National Cartoonists Society and their Foundation?

The NCSF is the charitable wing of the National Cartoonists Society who happens to be the most prominent grouping of professional cartoonists in the world.

Simply put the NCS is the 800 pound gorilla in this industry with no equal!

The NCSF was founded in 2005 for the purpose of putting lots of emphasis on charitable works and mostly supporting educational activities.

The National Cartoonists Society has over 500 of the world’s top cartoonists working in professions of all types such as magazines, greeting cards, comic books, newspapers, advertising and many others as well.

Membership in this esteemed club is limited to those who are well-established cartoonists. The NCS is neither a union or a guild.

The underlying ambition of the NCS is three-fold:

To advance the ideals and standards of professional cartooning in its many forms; to promote and foster a social, cultural and intellectual interchange among professional cartoonists of all types, and to stimulate and encourage interest in and acceptance of the art of cartooning by aspiring cartoonists, students and the general public.

The NCSF Scholarships Grants

The NCSF student award is called the Jay Kennedy Scholarship, which is in memory of the late King Features editor who drowned unexpectedly while vacationing. He was the cartoon editor for Esquire magazine from 1983-1988. He wrote numerous articles on cartooning and also wrote for the magazines of New Age Journal, Heavy Metal, New York, The IGA Journal, & Escape. He also authored the “The Underground Comic’s Guide” – 1982.

Needless to say he was a cartoon guru whose fascination of comics was almost legendary in itself. He believed that comic’s; or cartooning was one of the best forms of communication in the world. His belief was everyone could understand the art-form of cartoons; as opposed to the fine arts where only the few could fully appreciate what they saw.

The NCSF scholarships started with an initial donation grant of $100,000 from the Hearst Foundation/King Features Syndicate, and continued to receive other large donations from other outstanding cartoonist along the way.

To apply to the NCS scholarships & grants students must be attending a 4-year university in the US, Canada or Mexico and be a junior status. Applicants do not have to be art students to apply either.

Applicants are required to submit 8 samples of their own cartoon art work.

The samples are judged by a team of top cartoonists. The college students with the best selected artwork will be given scholarships and grants.

NCSF will decide if there are multiple winners, and also the amounts will vary, all at the discretion of the NCSF panel of esteemed cartoonists. So this means that there may be many awards given out; or just one.

Deadline for submissions is December 15th.

To apply for the NCSF Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship you can go to the NCSF website to download the application for submission and send to:

Student would send their completed form and 8 examples of your own cartooning artwork. Put ALL examples onto a CD AND print out paper copies – no originals.

University of California Scholarships Grants

The University of California offers different scholarships & grants in different capacities, and the fact that there are campuses strewn all over the country.

University of California Scholarships Grants
University of California Scholarships Grants

The University of California offers different scholarships & grants in different capacities, and the fact that there are campuses strewn all over the country makes it necessary for the applicant to go through the set guidelines by each individual campus.

Every campus has its unique set of instructions to which students must adhere while applying for the gift aid. Therefore you should make sure that you go through the links for whichever campus is relevant to you before filling and handing in your application for consideration.

Taking into consideration the fact that more than 100,000 undergraduates receive gift aid in one way or the other, as a UC student you should take this opportunity and also make sure that you get a share of this cake.

It has been documented that in the previous year alone the institution provided close to $1.9 billion in gift aid to more than 100,000 undergraduate students, which loosely translates to around $16,000 for every student. All of this was aimed at helping the students cover their expenses and tuition fees.

One of the main considerations whenever gift aid is being awarded either by the federal government, the state of California and/or the University of California, is the applicant’s basis of need. In line with this criteria, need is often determined by the information that the applicant is going to provide when they are applying for financial aid. This will therefore include things like the expected costs once you get to campus, and most importantly the status of your resources back at home.

In as much as this is important, a host of the gift aid that is offered hardly ever consider merit, though where necessary merit becomes an important factor of consideration, especially for those who are applying for aid through programs that focus on individual talent in things like sports, music and other areas that require individual talent.

The institution provides grants and scholarships under different programs. Some of the most common programs that you will find when applying include the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, the Middle Class Scholarship program, Cal Grant program and the Pell Grant program.

Perhaps one of the best things about all these grant programs is that you do not necessarily need to apply for them individually. All you need to do is to make one application for financial aid and you will be considered for all of them.

Blue and Gold Opportunity Scholarships Grants Plan

In the event that you come from a family whose annual income is below $80,000, your tuition fees will be catered to with the different gift aid programs available. For normal program students this will be for the four years in the institution, while for transfer students this is for two years.

Therefore you do not have to pay for the fees through your own means.

In the event that you have determined that your family does have the financial capacity over and beyond the $80,000 annual family income you can still be able to apply for financial assistance so that you can lower your costs of attending school.

You will first have to fill and hand in your FAFSA, the California Dream Act and the Cal Grant GPA verification form. These are often handed in early March, unless the institution provides special instructions otherwise.

When applying you must be in any of your first four years at the institution in the event that you are a regular student, or the first two years in the event that you are a transfer student.

There are a host of other campus requirements which are specific to different campuses under the program, which also you have to adhere to.

In most cases you must be registered and enrolled in the institution for at least half of the academic year, not be behind in student loans or in default, and you should also meet the regular campus academic standards stipulated in the application guidelines when applying for scholarships & grants at the U of C.

The University of California Scholarships Grants programs are worth looking into simply because they have so much money to dole out towards financial aid for incoming students, along with larger higher profile schools making a push in helping the everyday student to afford attending a major university.

Cleveland State University Scholarships and Grants

Cleveland State University offers scholarships and grants to students, and these are normally structured in different ways catering to particular needs.

Cleveland State University Scholarships Grants
Cleveland State University Scholarships Grants

Cleveland State University offers scholarships and grants to students, and these are normally structured in different ways catering to particular needs.

The university recognizes the need to make sure that no student is denied the chance to learn due to financial constraints, and this is why the scholarships grants are advanced to the students.

These are financial aids which do not always have to be repaid, and the award will normally depend on many things. Students can be awarded the scholarship either based on academic merit, or financial need, or at times both.

There are more than 200 different academic programs being offered at CSU, and slightly over 17,000 students enrolled in these programs. The goal of the constant redevelopment is to make sure that in the future CSU will become one of the leading universities in the country.

Cleveland State University provides students the ability to merge a sense of place and purpose so that they can achieve some extraordinary results in their lives. This is an urban public university that seeks to empower the students in order to serve the community wholesomely, while at the same time playing a role in the redevelopment of the city with a brilliant future in mind, something that most of the other institutions have not been able to handle.

The Different types of Cleveland State University Scholarships and Grants

There are three main scholarships grants that the school offers to the students. Students who are applying for the scholarships are however advised to at least complete their duly completed FAFSA forms so that they can be considered fully for all the other categories of financial aid available.

New Incoming Freshmen Cleveland State University Scholarships

This is a scholarship program that is offered to the new students who are enrolling for their first year at the university. All new students are automatically considered for this scholarship from the moment they are admitted to the school; therefore you should not have any challenges applying for this one.

Cleveland State University Continuing Students Scholarships

Once you have been admitted to the school and you are proceeding with your undergraduate studies, you can as well enrol for the continuing students’ scholarship if you are going to be in session for the proceeding academic year. This is important because it allows you the chance to keep on with your studies irrespective of the financial challenges that you might be having.

Other Sources of Cleveland State University Scholarships

Apart from these two scholarships there are other external sources of scholarships that students are normally advised to explore in the event that they are not successful in their application for the aforementioned scholarship programs.

Considering the fact that scholarships are normally awarded based on merit and/or financial need, it might be hard to obtain these owing to the number of applicants and their special situations, so it is always a good thing to at least consider the external scholarships grants, if and when available.

When you are applying for scholarships from Cleveland State University, you have to be very keen on the requirements for eligibility. It is diligent for you to go through all the requirements step by step to ascertain whether or not you are considered eligible to apply.

The main reason for this is because there are some scholarships that you cannot apply for when you have already applied for or received awards from other specific scholarships. Therefore you have to be very keen on the application procedures involved.

Apart from that, there are also requirements that you need to know about especially when you intend to keep your scholarships. This is important especially for the scholarships and grants that are renewable on an annual basis. You have to take note of the renewal dates, the renewal procedure and all the requirements and guidelines necessary.

Of course there are other alternatives that students can look into which go so far in making sure that you can enjoy your studies. You can always consider the work-study option which will certainly help guarantee you some financial freedom when you are going through your studies – which we highly recommend!
