Three finalists will then be selected, and the prize winner will get a total award of $50,000 as well as a geographic expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program is exclusively designed for students who have suffered the death of a parent or a legal guardian. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be between the ages of 17 to 24 and should be presently enrolled in to an accredited college or university that is located within the 50 United States, Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia. Moreover, applicants must either make a three-minute video or write an essay of 500 words, explaining how the death of their parent affected them emotionally and financially. The James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program is designed for students who plan to enroll, or are already enrolled (part-time) during the next year, in any course of study which leads up to a certificate or degree at an accredited or licensed culinary school. Students who demonstrate a large amount of financial need will be preferred for the scholarship. Successful applicants are selected on the basis of their academic performance, leadership activities as well as participation in community and school activities.
