From the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum comes the JFK Profile in Courage Essay Contest. This John F Kennedy scholarship provides three different levels of awards. On top of this applicants must be high school graduates, accepted into a university and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average. The deadline for this program is March 11.

The Anchor Scholarship Foundation gives out military spouse tuition assistance to the tune of $500 and has done so since 1981 when the group was founded. In 2010 they awarded over 42 different spouse scholarships. All applicants for this military spouse scholarship will need to have a sponsor who is currently on active duty in the US Navy or be retired with six consecutive years served. Winners of the award must be attending a four year college or be a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into a university. While a 2011 deadline date has not yet been announced, interested students should watch the website for forthcoming information.

Another group which offers scholarships for military spouses is the Folds of Honor Foundation which gives out two different scholarships for $5,000 based on differing criteria. General eligibility for both programs requires that applicants be a spouse or dependent on an active duty military member, a military member who died, or received the Purple Heart. Both of the military spouse , students will need to show proof of their significant other’s disability obtained through active duty as well as proof of dependency.

The Immediate Use Scholarship requires all applicants to be under the age of 24 while the Future Use scholarship can be given out based on an intended use at an unspecified time in the future. All application materials must be submitted no later than May 15.

All applicants must be United States citizens. Submitted essays must be on an assigned topic as selected by the Signet Classics high school senior scholarship committee. In 2011 the essay topics all revolve around “The Moonstone” by Wilkie Collins. The deadline for this program is April 21, 2011.

Two different awards are made available by the scholarship for high school seniors offered through Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Teens group. One of the applicants to their Video Competition program will receive $500 and another second place winner will receive $250. All applicants are expected to be United States citizens and be between 13 to 19 years old. Submissions must be in video format and relate to a moment when students learned something about Alzheimer’s disease, learned about care giving for sufferers of the illness or when the student decided to become a community volunteer. All material must be submitted no later than December 1 of every year.

The Posse Foundation & the Posse scholarship for high school senior program judges students using non-traditional criteria so a students true leadership abilities are exhibited in how well they work together in a team setting and how motivated they are to succeed.

The Best Buy Scholarship for high school students will be awarding up to $1.5 million yearly for high school students and grades 9-12. The Best Buy @15 Scholarship will award up to 850 scholarships to high school seniors.

The unique Western Union scholarships awarded 80 high school senior scholarships in 2011 and has many other types of awards with various criteria geared for students starting college.

The Robert C Byrd Honors Scholarship Program will award up to 27,000 scholarships for students heading off to college. This government sponsored scholarship scheme may be the largest of its kind and with so many yearly awards students have more of a chance to win one as opposed to others which award one or two yearly. The Big 33 Scholarship Foundation awards at least 150 scholarships every year. Between $500 to $4,500 are the awards. This may seem like an athletic scholarship, but this is not the case – anyone can apply and the qualifying criteria is very liberal.

The Cargill Scholarship Program includes three different scholarships and theirs one for high school seniors. You must live nearby a Cargill business to apply. These are Community Scholarships which tend to be lenient on qualifying. Forty one time awards of $3,000 are given out yearly which makes this program very worth applying to.

Oil Can Henry’s scholarships are one of those companies only known about by people who live around them. Their (85) locations are scattered through Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington. They will maintain your car for the general maintenance that cars need done and they are very fast and good at it too which insures your car continues to run efficiently. Oil Can Henry’s will award $1,000 high school senior scholarships for each of their (85) outlets.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides awards every year through their scholarships for high school seniors. Each year fifty students nationally will be selected to receive a $20,000 coke scholarship to the school of their choice and another 200 students on a regional level will be awarded $10,000. In order to be eligible for this program, students will need to be current high school seniors and citizens of the United States. All applicants will be expected to be graduating in their application year and be carrying at least a 3.0 grade point average. Of course all students must be planning to attend college. The application period opens on August 1 and material should be turned in no later than October 31 of a given year. 2011 scholars have already been selected, however students interested in these high school senior scholarships should begin applying for the 2012 cycle as soon as it opens.

The above senior scholarships are only a selection of many such programs available, and interested students should be sure to check with multiple foundations to get a full list of such programs. It is always in the best interest of a student to start as early as possible so do not wait until the last-minute to begin applying.

Students who are entering any field which is related to a STEM program should absolutely consider what their financial assistance options are, looking carefully for STEM scholarships which will help them pay for their education. While there are many programs through a STEM scholarship program; available competition is normally going to be fairly high and applicants are going to be going up against other students in fields that are the same as their own.

Because STEM scholarships are often merit based combined with a relatively high demand for the financial assistance they give students should expect fairly stiff competition. In order to be eligible for this Great Minds STEM scholarship, students will need to be able to demonstrate leadership through community involvement and academic awards. All applicants will need to be majoring in a STEM related course while maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. Applicants must be enrolled in a formal degree program by fall of the year in which the award is given and all applicants must either be of direct Hispanic descent or be heavily involved in organizations which work in the Hispanic community. The deadline for this STEM scholarship is April 30 of 2011.

An example of a locally awarded STEM scholarship comes from the High Tech Transfer Program Scholars Project offered through Chandler-Gilbert Community College. This STEM scholarship 2011 gives out at least $2,500 per semester, or $5,000 per academic year. In order to be eligible for this STEM scholarship students will need to be enrolled full time at CGCC in a field related to engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, math or computer and information fields. All applicants are expected to have no less than a 2.75 grade point average and be US citizens who are eligible for financial aid. The deadline for this program is April 4 of every year.

The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program has STEM scholarships throughout the United States and offers scholarships to teachers studying in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This program is designed to have teachers with careers in elementary to secondary educational institutions.

The Benjamin Gilman Scholarship Program is a huge international study abroad scholarship for STEM students offered through the U.S. Department of State. It is for undergraduates in the United States who want to go overseas to study in other countries. Approximately 125 awards are given out yearly giving many opportunities for students in STEM studies.

STEM scholarships represent a great way to get financial aid for school. Such programs are available in many different forms and students should absolutely check in with their individual STEM related departments to check and see if such a program is available for them. This STEM scholarship provides at a max $41,000 and at a minimum $25,000 depending on academic performance and experience. In order to be eligible for the SMART STEM scholarship students must be residents of the United States, be at least 18 years old, be enrolled in a school, and be able to hold a security clearance. Only certain fields are covered by the program such a geological science, aeronautical science and behavioral studies. Full tuition is covered by the program, summer internships will be available and graduating students will be placed in a formal job with the Depart of Defense. All application materials must be submitted no later than December 1.

For those schools which do not have applicable STEM programs available students are encourage to look towards national foundations or even look at government programs to find the additional aid they may need. Many government departments such as Homeland Security or Defense offer STEM scholarships for women.

One of the easiest ways to find a Robert Noyce Scholarship is to go to the NSF website and use their project locater. By simply going to the project locater and selecting a state a list of available programs will be made immediately available.

As an example of using the Project Locater on the NSF website to find Robert Noyce scholarships, selecting Michigan as the designated state of interest will bring up six different search results. The first of these is offered through Eastern Michigan University and available to students at every level of education for those seeking bachelor degrees to those going to school for graduate studies. In order to be eligible for this Noyce Scholarship students will need to be currently enrolled at Eastern Michigan University, been admitted to the College of Education, have one to two years of course work left to complete, be committed to working in a urban setting, be a US citizen and be prepared to commit up to two years of their post undergraduate work to a high need school. All applicants are expected to maintain no less than a 3.0 grade point average. Those receiving an award will have all of their tuition and fee covered by the program (cannot exceed $13,333) while being able to gain additional field experiences. Applicants are due at the same time all submissions requesting financial aid are due at Eastern Michigan University.

Using the project locator again on the NSF website and selecting Kansas, two related programs come up. The first of these offered by Kansas State University through their Teach Program which focuses on rural educators. This Robert Noyce Scholarship provides a stipend program to winning students which gives $320 a week for four weeks during the summer of a given academic year. To be eligible for the program students will need to be current freshmen or sophomore studying a science related field. All applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, have successfully completed one year at Kansas State and be enrolled as a full time student. Applicants who win the stipend Noyce Scholarship will be expected to apply and work at an education oriented summer internship and then participate in a seminar about education provided by Kansas State. Juniors and seniors applying for this program at Kansas State will be able to receive greater rewards ranging from $13,000 – $15,000 applied for up to two years of their education. All applications must be received no later than May 1 of a given year, or November 1 for graduate students.

Again looking at the project locater on the NSF website and selecting this time California, 49 different programs are shown to be available. One of these listed Robert Noyce Scholarship programs is the CalTeach Berkely Noyce Scholars program. This Noyce scholarship program provides funding to students who are interested in either mathematics or science, having separate awards for each category. Students are required to be undergraduate learners who have been accepted into the College of Education and are working to complete their teacher training programs. Up to $10,000 will be provided to awarded students and funding can continue for up to two years. All students are expected to maintain at least a 2.8 grade point average and be majoring in science or mathematics. Applications must be received no later than October 29 of a given application year.

Many celebrities leap into stardom with seeming ease, but it is rare to find a celebrity that does not see the value in higher education – even if they did not complete it themselves. One of the most positive things about these celebrity sponsored scholarships and the celebrities themselves is that they often have some non-traditional qualities.

The David Letterman Scholarship mirrors Letterman’s educational experiences and his own talents. Letterman seeks to help average academic students who show great talent and creativity in the media project they submit with the application. Creativity in the telecommunications or radio and television area is the main qualification for eligibility for this celebrity scholarship to his alma mater, Ball State University in Indiana. As such, grades are surprisingly NOT a consideration for applicants. Individuals must be first-quarter juniors through first-quarter seniors to apply for one of the three celebrity scholarships of varying monetary amounts. The winner of the Letterman scholarship receives $10,000, while the first and second runners-up receive $5,000 and $3,333 respectively. The deadline for applications to be received by Ball State is March 1st of each year.

Alec Baldwin was a 1994 graduate of the Tisch School for the Arts, a part of New York University and he is giving back to students of the university with a gift of $1 million to be used for his celebrity college scholarships for students in the Drama Department. Students must obviously be talented, but Baldwin seeks to assist those who are also dedicated team players who demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to grow from risk and constructive criticism. Need and will be a major consideration, as part of the gift also goes to support Tisch’s mission to find “academically and artistically talented students” from any economic background.

While the following celebrities scholarship is not affiliated with a single celebrity, it is endorsed by a team full of sports celebrities, The Phoenix Suns. The Phoenix Suns Charity has been around since 1987 with the goal to use the resources of the basketball team to assist the needs of children in Arizona. In honor of many of the Suns’ athletes, eligibility includes excellence in academics which shows dedication and persistence, as well as community involvement which indicates empathy and an awareness of others besides oneself. All of this is indicative of values and strengths important to the team. The amount of students who receive one of the $2,000 unknown scholarships varies from year to year, but in addition to these, one outstanding student receives the Kevin Johnson Scholar Award of $5,000. The deadline for application is typically in late January for the upcoming school year.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program benefits an enormous amount of students. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, 1,000 students will receive a celebrity scholarship for any college or university from entrance until degree completion. This means students can continue from undergraduate through doctoral programs with assistance from this celebrity sponsored scholarship. Not only do recipients receive monetary help from the scholarship, but academic, professional and personal support is also provided so students are able to make the most of their potential and college experience. The GMSP targets minority students who show academic and leadership potential as well as community service. Applications are due in early January and recipients are notified by May 1.

Jerry Seinfeld is yet another celebrity who offers his celebrity scholarship boasting his name, The Seinfeld Scholarship. Seinfeld honors his roots by providing four-year unknown scholarships to students graduating from any of New York’s public schools. Every year scholarships are awarded to students from a different borough of New York City; it rotates yearly from borough to borough. The 2011 scholarship is being awarded to a student graduating in June from a public high school in Queens. The online application is typically available in December for the following year. Financial need is, of course, a major determinate for candidacy, but students must also show academic diligence with a GPA above 3.4, creativity, and leadership potential. Up to $10,000 will be paid to help students cover any need associated with higher education: books, tuition, living expenses, etc. Winners may pursue any area of study at a four-year college or university.

The Bill Cosby Scholarship sponsored by one of the funniest people on earth – Bill Cosby a renowned comedian for many years and even today, is administered through Temple University Natural Science’s Department located in Philadelphia, PA awards two $3,500.00 celebrity scholarships. This unknown scholarship award was set up by Bill and his wife in honor of their late son.

The Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Program is not a celebrity scholarship that can be applied to directly from her website. This famous talk show host donates monies to various colleges through her Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the colleges use these monies to make educational awards mostly based on need – financial or otherwise. The donated monies supplement existing college scholarships already in place at the colleges which are directed at ethnic minorities and women. Oprah will try to offer support to women and minorities in financial need looking to attend college and cannot afford to do so. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation is a multi-faceted organization which creatively uses it’s financial resources in many various ways to offer those financial support for those who would have no chance of getting it themselves.

Famous talk show host Jay Leno has his celebrity scholarship and is called the Fred Duesenberg Memorial Scholarship. It’s limited in scope in that a student must be attending McPherson College as a sophomore junior or senior to be awarded $20,000 given to one student annually. Winners must exhibit superior skills in the area of car restoration at McPherson College.

These are just a few of the scholarships from celebrities and there are many more because it is such a goodwill gesture which every celebrity wants to be a part of.

The Federal Government is the single largest funding body for postsecondary students and their families. Annually, federal grant programs pay over $150 billion in aid to over 14 million students. Grants and scholarships, unlike loans do not need to be paid back to a lending facility and are essentially free money.

There are currently four primary federal grants; two additional grants, the National SMART Grant and Academic Competitiveness Grant were recently defunded and eliminated. A student just by filling out a FAFSA determines a student’s eligibility for these remaining federal grants which must be reapplied for annually and if a change of university occurs. There are several other more obscure federal grants for which students may apply. The most common and widely known federal grant is the Pell Grant. Pell Grants are foundational student aid, meaning that aid from other sources may be added onto the amount you receive. The maximum allowable Pell Grant amount is $5,550 per year. However, the amount of money received depends on several variables, including personal financial need, school attendance costs, and your student status as part- or full-time. The amount received will be disclosed in a student’s financial aid packet and is disbursed on a given date for each term.

Students who had a parent or guardian that was a member of the Armed Forces and died as a result of service after the September 11, 2001 attacks may be eligible for the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant if they were enrolled part-time or more in college when the death occurred. They must also be under 24 years old and ineligible for a Pell Grant. The maximum allowable amount for this grant is also $5,550 but not to exceed the cost of college for that year.

The federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant gives up to $4,000 per year to students planning to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school. This grant serves the dual purpose of helping future teachers afford their higher education and funneling qualified teachers into high need areas that serve low-income students and families. Accepting this grant serves as a contract that within eight years of graduating, you will teach a minimum of four years in one of these areas. Failure to complete these years of service means that the amount of the grant will automatically be transferred into a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan and interest will be charged from the date of the grant’s disbursement. This grant could be a huge help for the right students, but it is not something to accept without considerable thought, as the consequences for default can be highly inconvenient and costly.

The final choice of the top four federal government scholarships grants financial aid is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) which is for undergraduate students who demonstrate extreme financial need. The Pell Grant is the first grant for which students are considered. After that students with the most minimal expected family contributions (EFCs) will be first eligible for a FSEOG. FSEOG’s are disbursed in amounts between $100 and $4,000 a year, depending on several variables: when the grant is applied for, financial need, funding at the recipient’s intended school, and that institutions financial aid policies.

There is also a federal Healthcare Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students that offers money to economically challenged students who would like to pursue a career in the health or medical field. A difference between this federal government scholarship and the above grants is that students apply for this scholarship at their school of attendance, because participating schools manage the funds and choose the recipients. Therefore, monetary amounts and deadlines vary from school to school.

There are several other federally funded scholarships for which students may be eligible. The Federal Employer Education Assistance Fund (FEEA) Scholarship awards between $300 and $2000 scholarships to students who have a minimum of three years’ experience as a civilian federal employee. The Health Profession Scholarship is awarded to a member of a federal recognized American Indian or Alaskan Native tribe. A difference with this federal scholarship to that of others is that while it is a free government scholarship, there is a service requirement in which the money must be repaid with service in the student’s chosen health profession once the student has graduated.

Students interested in studying abroad may be eligible for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship which awards up to $5000-$8000 for students studying critical need languages.

The Robert Byrd Honors Scholarships are funded at the top level through grants from the US Department of Ed. The Byrd Scholarships are awarded at the state level through their agencies. All US states in the union are participants in the program. It’s a merit based scholarship and not every student who applies will be given an award but with large numbers of yearly awards are on an applicant’s side. With a strong application a students chances of wining a Robert Byrd scholarship is pretty good compared to programs which only have one or two awards annually.

A final federal scholarship is the NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) which benefits outstanding scholars with exceptional financial need who plan to pursue a research career at NIH in biomedical, behavioral or social science. Up to $20,000 per academic year may be offered for students willing to fulfil a service obligation.

As you can see, there is substantial federal government scholarships and grant money available to scholars who wish to spend the effort to pursue it. It is always advisable that students exhaust ALL sources of free grant and scholarship money, from federal, public and private areas before committing to a loan of any type. It should also be evident that the application processes for any free money should be begun very early, so as not to run out of time and forfeit possible funds.

The Foundation and its members seek to better the world through peace and goodwill, so the not-for-profit corporation uses its resources to improve health, education, and living conditions of individuals throughout the world. To encourage young people to use their time and talents in similar fashion, Rotary offers hundreds of thousands of Rotary Club scholarship dollars annually to individuals embodying the spirit of a future Rotarian.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship is the largest privately funded club scholarship program in the world. Students who are interested in bridging cultural gaps between countries by studying in a non-native country should absolutely apply for this Rotary Ambassadorial International scholarship. As indicated by the program’s name, students serve as young ambassadors to the country of placement for an academic school year and share information about their home country to other students and local Rotary clubs, as well as bring knowledge of that culture back home. Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship amounts will vary but typically range upwards of $20,000 for the year abroad. Ambassadorial Scholarships, like all Rotary scholarships, must be applied for at local Rotary branches. The application process is a long one, so interested students must prepare well in advance to be considered. Applications for the Rotary 2012-2013 school year must typically be received between January and August 2011, but deadlines vary by Rotary location. Rotary also offers fellowships for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution to individuals interested in becoming a leader in the promotion of cooperation, peace and conflict resolution in all aspects of life. “Fellows can earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution.” Because 3-5 years of work experience is required to be considered for a fellowship, recent recipients of an undergraduate degree are typically not suited for the opportunity. Also, students having participated in Rotary’s Ambassador Program must wait three years before applying for a fellowship. Deadlines for application vary by location, so check with your local branch.

Additional Rotary scholarships are available from local Rotary organizations, but vary dramatically in amounts and eligibility requirements. The Tylenol Future Care Scholarship is offered to college students having begun their freshmen year and is also available to graduate students not yet in their senior year. Students must be enrolled in a degree program related to the medical field, like nurse practitioner. Ten scholarships of $10,000 and thirty scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded in the spring of 2011. The medical scholarship rewards leadership, academic excellence and dedication and is funded by McNeil Consumer Healthcare; a Johnson & Johnson company. The deadline for application in 2011 is May 27th. Scholarship recipients will be notified in July and monies are distributed by August 15, 2011.

Also worth noting are the Johnson and Johnson scholarships for nursing which are one of the premier medical scholarships today. They are awarded in a number of various avenues.

A prestigious scholarship given specifically to a student member of the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) who is currently enrolled in a nurse practitioner program is the ACNP Nurse Practitioner Student Scholarship. Only one of these NP scholarships is awarded annually, but don’t let that deter you from applying, if you are eligible. That one person may just as well be you as anyone else! In addition to the $1000 monetary scholarship, the recipient also receives a free year of ACNP membership. The recipient is also awarded $750 for travel and accommodations to the ACNP annual conference where the winner is announced.

The National Health Service Corps Scholarship (NHSC) is another significant scholarship for Family Nurse Practitioners, as well as students studying in other medical fields. 200 medical scholarships nation-wide should be awarded in 2011 alone. This scholarship is significant for several reasons. The NHSC scholarship pays tuition, fees, and other education costs like books, clinical supplies, lab fees, uniforms, etc. for as many as four years. Recipients receive a taxable monthly living stipend of approximately $1300. Acceptance of the scholarship binds the recipient to a post-education service agreement of two years minimum, four years maximum. This service agreement is extremely significant because recipients agree to work in one of the country’s most underserved areas post-graduation. Federally-supported health care centers, rural health clinics, Indian Health centers and public health facilities are a few of possibilities for placement. Providing high quality service to these areas is a major motivator for the medical scholarship.

In addition to the types of medical and nursing scholarships already surveyed, there are also extremely specific scholarships available within the nursing field. For example, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) lists many diverse scholarships all within the nursing field. There are nurse practitioner scholarships available for both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Some of these awards include: fellowships for American Indians or Eskimos from the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC), two $50,000 scholarships from the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC), National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) scholarships totalling $1000-$2000, ExceptionalNurse.com which awards a $250 scholarship to an undergraduate student with a disability, a $2500 Advance Practice Nursing Scholarship for acute and/or critical care nurses whom reside in Illinois which is sponsored by the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, several other nurse practitioner scholarships for minority students, as well as numerous other awards.

As with many other specific scholarship types, universities offering a Nurse Practitioner program will likely also offer scholarships. Inquiring with your college is always a good first step in finding local scholarships. It is again very important not to limit yourself to nursing scholarships specifically identified for Nurse Practitioner students, as many Nursing scholarship and medical field scholarships are also applicable. There are so many scholarships available to individuals interested in the nursing field that money should not be a hindrance to dedicated students.

Initiatives within these minority scholarships are often designed to support community involvement or volunteer activities so students who are interested in applying to a Sallie Mae scholarship would be well advised to be active in their local communities.

Sallie Mae is a top financial services company which specializes in education. They offer creative educational savings tools, tuition payment plans and student loans. Since 2001 over 6,350 students have received Sallie Mae scholarships averaging out to around 635 awards a year. Because of the national nature of these programs competition is going to be relatively high, so students who are interested in applying should prepare applications which best represent their volunteerism and dedication to their local communities. Though this is not a guaranteed way of getting a Sallie Mae scholarship, matching an applicant’s history with the initiatives and interests of the organization will certainly help quite a bit along the way. Also important to understand in this process is that, while nearly all of the Sallie Mae scholarships are currently closed, they open back up frequently and interested students should really pay close attention to make sure they do not miss upcoming deadlines.

There are five main Sallie Mae scholarships for minorities offered by the fund almost every year, one of which is the American Dream Scholarship Program. In collaboration with the United Negro College Fund this Sallie Mae Scholarship is open to black students who can display strong financial need. All applicants must be a United States resident and maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average. Students must also be attending school full-time at an accredited university. Award amounts vary between $500 and $5,000. Though this program is currently closed, students should watch both the UNCF and the Sallie Mae scholarship website for when it may reopen.

Another one of the main Sallie Mae scholarships for minority students is the First in My Family Scholarship Program. This program provides funding to financially needy students who are the first in their family to be attending college. Eligibility requires that students be Hispanic Americans who are legal US citizens. All applicants must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. This program provides between $500 and $5,000 to those who receive an award. This program is currently closed but may reopen in 2011 or 2012, so stay tuned.

The Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship for minorities is open only to those families who make less than $30,000 a year. As it stands the Unmet Need Scholarship is not meant to represent a sole source of financial aid and as such only provides $1,000 to $3,000. In order to be eligible for the program students will need to be US residents attending full-time at an accredited university. The grade point average of the applicant must be no lower than 2.5 and award amounts will be determined on relative financial need. This Sallie Mae is currently closed with no 2011 deadline, but as it is still on the Sallie Mae website it should be pretty clear that the program has hopes of being reopened.

Community College Transfer Scholarship for minorities exists to offer students making the transition from a two-year institution to a four-year one. Often the cost difference between community colleges and four-year universities can be extreme, and this Sallie Mae scholarship should be able to help defray some of those costs. This program exists in collaboration with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund under the General College scholarships section. It awards between $1,000 and $5,000 to winners of the scholarship. In order to be eligible students must be transferring from a community college, be of Hispanic heritage, have at least a 3.0 grade point average and intend to enroll full-time at a four-year university. Though the deadline for this program has passed for 2011, students are encouraged to look in September of 2011 to see if it will be offered again.

Like many other companies, Wells Fargo has a separate foundation which invests money in many different sources including their Wells Fargo scholarship through particular partnerships. In the past these partnerships have included groups like the Hispanic Scholarship Fund but, similar to some other foundations, Wells Fargo Scholarships are not always long term and may not be renewed. Despite this, students who are interested in a Wells Fargo scholarship will find a diverse amount of offerings in 2011 and 2012. Beyond these years students should always pay close attention to what scholarships are being offered by the organization, and be careful to double check dates. Very often older scholarships will remain on the internet despite no longer being offered. It is important to be able to quickly identify only those bank scholarships which are currently being offered so that students will be able to maximize both their time and their applications.

One of the programs which have been offered for a number of years in the form of a Wells Fargo scholarship is offered directly by the company under their CollegeSTEPS program. The program is limited to those students who are in high school and are interested in enrolling in a four year university. This college scholarship from Wells Fargo works more along the lines of a sweepstakes than a merit based program, but because it offers what is in essence free money for school with very little work on the part of the applicant, students should be incredibly interested in the opportunity. In order to enter the program students simply must enroll in the Wells Fargo CollegeSTEPS program which will provide email updates to individuals on financial aid offerings, study methods and open campus visits. Just by enrolling into the program students will be automatically enrolled for a chance to win $1,000 towards college. Getting useful tips for college and having very little effort on the part of students makes this opportunity worth looking into. Four drawings are made every year and in each drawing five students are selected for awards. As the program operates on a rolling basis, students do not have to be overly concerned about deadlines. However, to better maximize their chances students should enroll before February 4 in order to get a chance in every drawing.

Native Americans will be interested to know that in 2005 a scholarship fund was established in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) to create a Wells Fargo scholarship at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants must be an enrolled member of a recognized American Indian tribe, as well as be going to school for a degree in banking, resort management, gaming operations or administration. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average and meet Pell Grant eligibility requirements. The award amount for this program varies according to financial need and all materials must be turned in no later than June 1, 2011.

The Pride Foundation has an established partnership with Wells Fargo and gives out Wells Fargo scholarships every year. Though the 2011 scholarship cycle with the Pride Foundation has ended, there are strong indications that the award will be offered again in 2012. The criteria for this Wells Fargo scholarship are pretty basic – students must be enrolled in college and be actively involved in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender movement. Straight allies who are actively involved will be considered for a Wells Fargo scholarship as well. All applicants must be residents of the United States though those students looking to attend school outside of the US can still apply so long as they have residency in the country. Awards can go as high as $10,000 but the average tends to be around $3,300. The deadline for this Wells Fargo scholarship is January 31 of every year, and students would be wise to stay tuned to 2012.

While being well dressed is not required to get access to the Nordram scholarships, being a sharp student with an outstanding personal application is. Officially in 2011 the Nordstrom scholarship was expanded to cover up to 80 high school students so the good news is that the average applicant’s chances of getting an award have officially increased. The bad news, as is often the case with scholarships like this, is that competition may remain high.

As one of the United States’ top clothing retailers, Nordstrom scholarships have been offered for a number of years as the company has been in the black. The program represents one of several community outreach program that the chain offers to help young people achieve their dreams or enhance their local areas. While students are able to apply to the Nordstrom scholarship online, all interested parties should check in with their school’s guidance counselor to see if their school participates directly in the Nordstrom scholarship program. If they do not students should not be disheartened, the process just may not be as streamlined as it otherwise would be.

Nordstrom operates full line stores in 28 states in the United States, and the Nordstrom scholarship will only be available in those states. Interested applicants can check the official Nordstrom website for locations or do a simple Google search to see if a store is available in their state. Nordstrom scholarships will be given to 80 students in 2011 for a total of $10,000 to each award winner. This amount is not given out immediately but rather paid out in installments of $2,500 each year for four years to the school an awardee is attending.

In order to be eligible for the program students must be a high school junior and be maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.7. Applicants must be very active in their local community or have spent a good amount of time as a volunteer. A financial need must be indicated by a student being prepared to file formally for financial assistance through FAFSA once the student has been accepted to a university. Students cannot be convicted of any crimes and should be planning to attend a single four year university for the entire time they will be in college. All application material is due no later than May 16, 2011 and the process opens officially on March 15.

All entries for Nordstrom scholarships are judged on a regional level by panels consisting of local community leaders. Those students who have their applications accepted into the finalist pool will be interviewed in person by the selection committee in which their essay and submitted materials may come up. Because the applications are standard forms amongst all students, there is little room outside of leadership activities or volunteer projects applicants have been involved in which can be used to set an individual apart. Fortunately the essay portion of the application looks for a student to describe a character defining moment, cultural awareness developed over time or personal hardships that have overcome. This essay can be used very effectively to set an individual applicant apart from others, so do not simply start the process and ad lib the entire submission. Rather students should sit down and plan this out carefully – how have volunteer activities impacted an applicant’s cultural awareness, or how have community activities built the applicant’s character? Weigh these topics out carefully and, if possible, write an essay on each topic.

Once an essay on each topic has been written, students should review their work and submit that material which represents them the best. Students who have been incredibly active in their community and have built up a lot of experiences through volunteer work will have the best chances of winning a Nordstrom scholarship. As a result it is important to be active in the community and have the experiences necessary to draw on for the purposes of this application.

Western Union scholarships come in only a few forms and are only available to people based on very specific criteria such as their family and HyVee scholarships.

Though in the past Western Union Scholarships have been offered for many different purposes both nationally in the United States and around the world, their giving with regards to educational financial aid has decreased since 2006. Despite this there are still Western Union scholarships which students should be able to gain access to depending on what their lives are like and where exactly they fit in.

Three Western Union scholarships exist in the United States – their family scholarship, the Greater Washington Urban Leage scholarship, and a program offered through a company called HyVee. Each of these programs is fairly limited in who can apply whether it be targeted at immigrant families, employees of a company or restricted to a specific metro region. However those students who may find themselves eligible for the program are certainly encouraged to apply. Previous Western Union scholarships have existed with other organizations, but, in part because of the push into their family scholarship, many of these programs are now indefinitely closed.

The main, directly offered scholarship at Western Union is a family oriented program which targets immigrants and migrants in the United States. This program offers scholarships to two members of a single family either to help with tuition at school or other education related expenses. Western Union family scholarships do not exceed $5,000 per family winning an award, and the amount is divided between the two awardees, though not in equal amounts. Disbursed amounts are given depending on financial need. For instance if a family member is attending school full time and their brother or sister is simply taking English as a Second Language courses, the largest sum of the award will be given to the full time student. In order to be eligible for this program applicants will need to have resided in the US for at least seven years, have been born outside of the country and currently living in certain cities in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Washing DC or Florida. Citizenship is not required. All applicants will need to demonstrate financial need and submit the applications for both family members applying before April 21, 2011.

The Greater Washington Urban League offers Western Union scholarships in collaboration with Safeway Inc. Unfortunately the information on the Greater Washington Urban League website is out of date, but awards were given out in Washington DC as recently as March 17, 2011 so students will hopefully be reassured that the program is still on track. Every year the GWUL holds a gala event to raise money to ensure the program is available and, in 2011, the 39th annual gala was indeed held. This Western Union scholarship awards up to $3,000 to on average six different applicants. In order to be eligible applicants must have families who make less than $35,000 a year, maintain a 2.5 grade point average, be very active as a volunteer in the community and provide high school transcripts. Though the 2011 awards have been given out, interested applicants should contact Audrey Epperson in October 2011 to see if the program will be available again in 2012 and if the deadline will still be February 12.

In 2011 the HyVee Company partnered with Western Union to provide 80 $1,000 Western Union scholarships to high school seniors preparing to enroll in college. While there are no promises that the program will be available in 2012, interested applicants should stay tuned. In order to be eligible for this Western Union Scholarship a student will need to be a high school senior working for HyVee or be a child of a HyVee employee. All applicants must be enrolling in college for the first time. Under the same banner this scholarship from Western Union is also available for college students who are already enrolled in a university attending full time with at least sophomore standing. The annual deadline for this program is February 10.

However, depending on what a student’s station is life is, finding a social work scholarship and grant which fits with specific demographics or backgrounds is not very difficult, and locating those programs which are more generally accessible is a fairly easy process.

As with all scholarships, a first stop for any interested student should be the university’s financial aid office to see what local offerings may exist. Several foundations also give generous grants to universities to see towards the successful development of new social workers in the field making checking in with a local social work department an absolute must. In most cases or circumstances students should be able to find scholarships for social work which fit their needs and will help them fill in a financial gap which may exist for funding they still need to fill in order to afford school. Because of the amount the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship offers, students should expect competition at their individual college to be fairly stiff, so it is best to prepare for this program early in their academic career. By planning to seek out a nomination at their local college, students can be sure to perform well academically while participating actively in various student oriented organizations. In order to best plan to achieve a nomination, students should be aware that being involved while being academically responsible will put them in a better light at their institution.

From a total of 61,319 applicants, the JJ/WBGP has funded scholarships for 3,412 students and on average awards $33,000 to each recipient. Students who receive the awards can choose to attend school from a pool of more than 150 institutions. In order to be eligible for the program students must be from a World Bank member nation, hold a bachelors degree, not be from an industrialized nation and be in good health. Preferably students should be interested in economics, health, education or other topics related to the developing world. This particular program is available to students entering a master’s level program. Applicants will be weighed according to academic merit, professional experience outside of school and the importance of their selected study program. The final World Bank scholarship that is important to mention is the Japan Indonesia Scholarship program. It is funded every year by a grant from the Japanese Government and seeks to work with students entering PhD level studies. More focused than the previous two World Bank Scholarships, this program requires that applicants be residents of Indonesia, less than 45 years old and having maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4 point scale. States become members in the organization when they apply, and must have a strong Muslim background in how they operate, including the initiation of Shari’ah Law or other general Islamic legal practices. There are currently fifty six nations which are counted as members of the IDB, and students in these countries are eligible to apply for the many scholarship opportunities IDB offers.

As of 2011, there are three separate programs which have been made available for eligible students including the Scholarship Program for Muslim Communities, Scholarship in Science and Technology and the Merit Scholarship Program for High Technology. Interested students should take the time to peruse the available IDB scholarship programs and almost certainly apply to those IDB scholarships which they are eligible for.

The first Islamic Develop Bank Scholarship that needs to be mentioned is the Scholarship Program for Muslim Communities which allows students from non-member nations to apply for financial assistance. This program offers a rare opportunity for students who are from a Muslim background but do not live in a state which has initiated Islamic Law and are thus not members of the IDB. This Islamic Development Bank Scholarship program covers all expenses necessary to fund a student’s education, which makes this particular IDB scholarship incredibly attractive. Students interested in this scholarship cannot be over 24 years old, must have completed their secondary education, have already secured admission into an institution of higher education and must be a committed Muslim. It is dedicated to funding students who are interested in medicine, engineering, agriculture or any field which is directly related to any of those three disciplines. The deadline for the bank scholarship program for Non-Member Communities is December for in-country studies and July for those students interested in going to school abroad.

Islamic Development Bank Scholarships are primarily designed to help students interested in engaging at the community level, and so the Masters of Science Scholarship Program works to encourage students to enter disciplines such as human resources, science and technology. The generous awards for this program cover academic expenses, living costs, health insurance, air travel to their university, along with allowances for computer needs and conference participation.

Amongst the IDB eligibility requirements, the most important is that interested students must be from the pre-selected list of developed member nations in the IDB. They cannot be over 30 years old, must be a graduate student, have been nominated from their four year institution and be interested in returning home after graduation. Students who have studied and received a Bachelor of Science in demography or statistics are also welcome to apply for the program. In order to apply for this program, students will need to have submitted all of their relevant material by December 31.

The final Islamic Development Bank Scholarship that the IDB offers is the Merit Scholarships. This IDB scholarship is designed to help those students interested in advanced studies in the fields of applied science and technology. It gives awards to those students who are involved in a three year doctoral programs or have begun post-doctoral research. Applicants cannot be over the age of 35, must be attached to an established program, have a strong academic background and have a good understanding of whatever language their chosen institution speaks natively. In order to better fund those students selected for this program, the Merit Scholarship covers all academic expenses, provides a living allowance, gives money for health insurance programs, pays for air fare, and makes available cash for computer needs. Beyond these, the Merit Scholarship also provides an allowance for students preparing a scientific paper and additional resources for family-oriented needs, though these last two items are only available to post-doctoral students. The deadline for the IDB Merit Scholarship program is December 31. It is always smart to start planning out an application as early as possible so starting now will prove to be a boon to many interested applicants.
