    There’s a new patriotic twitter scholarship and it’s a good one. They’re called the Free to Tweet scholarships. Apply now and don’t let these become unclaimed scholarships. The right to free expression is something that most of us take for granted. However, it is something we need to recognize and to celebrate. To help bring some recognition to that well-known freedom, the Free to Tweet scholarships are designed with this in mind. On December 15th, it will be a day of freely tweeting what you wish. There will be 22 scholarships offered, each valued at $5,000.

    Any student between the ages of 14 and 22 can be involved in this twitter scholarship contest starting at midnight on the 15th of December. All tweets that are going to be for this contest need to be introduced with the hash tag of #freetotweet to be recognized. The information can be posted on any social media including blogs, so it isn’t going to be limited to only Twitter.

    The tweets that will be evaluated have to do with the First Amendment and how students view the future of it. There are five areas of freedom that can be discussed to qualify for these Free to Tweet scholarship funds. They include assembly, petition, press, speech, and religion. These twitter scholarships are in place to help students realize their role in helping to protect these rights even as technology allows us more and more freedoms with social media.

    The Free to Tweet platform is going to be viewed as an annual event. It is going to be offered as a means of Twitter based scholarships every single year starting with 2011. This is the kickoff of a great phenomenon in social media that the youth in our society can benefit from. It is going to be a historical moment in time that all students should be proud to have the opportunity to take part in.

    There are many celebrities that will be viewing the tweets out there too for the Free to Tweet scholarships. They will be assisting with the final judging of the winners. There hasn’t been too much information offered yet about what the judging will consist of. It is being said that the judges will be looking for original content, a powerful view of the First Amendment, and leadership among youth.

    Tweets can be either self-contained or it can contain a link to a website or other social media platform. This gives students plenty of leeway for being creative and for sharing their thoughts about the value of the First Amendment.. Students can submit as many entries as they would like during that 24 hour period of time on December 15th.

    This event is getting a great deal of attention, and there should be plenty of information online through social media sites that you can explore in order to find out what the youth in today’s society has to say. Students are often feeling like they don’t get a voice, so this is their chance to speak up on a very important right that we are lucky to have in the USA. It can make all of us realize those freedoms aren’t easy but that they make us the people we are today.

    This is a very unique twitter scholarship that is designed to help us recognize and appreciate how important the freedom of speech really is. The fact that we live in a society based on digital media and interaction means that the freedom is even more important than ever before.

    The protection that we have now online, in schools, in church, in what we write, and more is something that is well deserved. Yet that freedom didn’t come without a price. Students are encouraged to do some research about the various controversies and sacrifices that have occurred over time in order for that freedom that we have today to be known.

    Being able to see the value in the Bill of Rights and how it relates to this particular section of it is something that all students need to find a new appreciation of. This is a great way to get a buzz going around this topic now and every year! It’s a good idea to reflect on all our freedoms each of us have, especially freedom of speech, so start your tweeting for scholarships with the Free to Tweet scholarships on December 15th!

    Private school scholarships are an incredible way to help make sometimes very expensive schools easier to afford, and for some people they are necessary. There are a few scholarships for private schools available for students from a diverse background available to interested families which will make attending a private school more affordable. Families which have financial burdens, or perhaps have legal issues, or are in a minority demographic will find a great number of private school scholarships available to them. Students outside of those areas will also find financial aid available, as there are many different organizations willing to provide assistance.

    Some assistance comes from national organizations, but much of it comes from groups which are specifically working to provide aid for a select school or a collection of institutions. Parents of students preparing to head off to a private school should consult with the institution they are applying to in order to see what forms of financial aid may be available to them. It is very possible that the school will have a non-profit entity tied to it helping to provide financial assistance to students who need it.

    Families from Jackson County, Kentucky will be able to take advantage of the School Choice Scholarship in an attempt to find scholarships for local private schools. Scholarships for private schools from this organization are targeted specifically at low-income families who have less opportunity to enroll their children in private institutions. Students will need to be anywhere from kindergarten to grade 6 and qualify for the Federal Free or Reduced Lunch Program. All applicants will need to be preparing to enter a private school in Jackson County and all application materials must be turned in by April 16. Scholarship awards will be no greater than $2,000.

    Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education is an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to students in need of private school scholarships. Students getting a scholarship from this organization will be able to access up to $3,500 in a single year and can also be provided with mentoring services to ensure strong progress through their school. Additional amounts of $2,500 can be awarded through the Scholars program. Parents should contact the organization for deadline information and additional requirements.

    Depending on where they are located, families may be able to take advantage of scholarships for private schools provided by a Children’s Scholarship Fund office near them. The families of applicants will be required to show financial need and children entering a private school will need to be in grades k-8. Children which receive private school scholarships through the Fund will be given up to 75% of their overall tuition costs depending on relative financial need. Applications should be turned in before the start of a new academic year.

    Students in the Chicago area will be able to apply to the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund. Amounts will depend varying on where a student is going to school and how much aid they are determined to need. All applicants must be going to a private high school and live in either Chicago or a surrounding suburb. Applications must be submitted no later than May 13.

    The Latino Student Fund provides an immense amount of money every year in the form of private school scholarships to help minority families be able to afford elementary and secondary education. Students can be entering school at any level from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Pre-k to 5th graders will receive $500, 6-8th graders $1,000 and high schoolers will be eligible for $1,500. Applicants must be of Latino descent, have a strong academic record, and be attending a school supported by the Latino Student Fund. Applications open in the middle of January every year.

    Minority African-American students in Chicago may be able to apply to the LINK Unlimited private school scholarship program. Applicants will need to be an African-American student in eighth grade, live in the Chicago area, demonstrate financial need, and have a dedication to faith or moral values. Students will be given scholarship of up to $4,500 depending on financial need. Applications should be completed by January 8.

    Students in the Boston area will be able to apply for private school scholarships through the Catholic Schools Foundation which is linked directly to the Archdiocese of Boston. Funding amounts will vary school to school and are based on overall tuition costs in combination with financial need. Students who are attending or planning to attend a Catholic school in Boston area will be eligible to apply. As deadlines will also vary school to school, parents should contact their child’s school’s principle for more information.

    Philadelphia based White-Williams Scholars program gives out private school scholarships to students who meet their eligibility requirements. All applicants will need to be residents of Philadelphia, be in high school, live in a single parent home, and be able to demonstrate financial need. Awards of $1,500 are generally given out and all applications should be turned in during the spring of an upcoming academic year.

    Dallas County residents may find that they are eligible for the Today Foundation’s private school scholarships. Families will be able to have up to 75% of their overall tuition costs covered by the organization depending on their financial standing and number of dependents in the household. All applicants will need to show financial need, live in Dallas County, be at least five years old and be entering kindergarten up to eighth grade. Interested parents should contact the organization for deadline details.

    Depending on where a student is planning to attend school, there will likely be private school scholarships available to them. Located at the regional, county, or even city level, there are organizations around the country dedicated to helping students with sincere financial need access private school education. Parents should research and investigate all of their options, but be aware that it is very common that they will still have to shoulder a portion of the overall costs. While there are some instances in which these groups may pay for the complete cost of tuition, many programs expect parents to shoulder some of the cost and maintain an active role in their student’s education.

    College scholarships for high school seniors are useful to students who are preparing to graduate and move on into their college education. Heading off to college can be daunting for a number of reasons, amongst them being the price tag of a given university. High school senior scholarships are a useful way to help defray these costs because they reduce the overall price tag and in all hopes make college more affordable. Many students end up taking out student loans which just push the financial burden back, perhaps making things easier in the short-term but loading a student up with future stresses and debts they could otherwise avoid.

    There are scholarships to cover students in many different walks of life and some are easier than others to get access to. Students who are seriously considering a college education should start their search for high school senior scholarships as soon as they are able and hopefully have planned for the event of their graduation a year or two ahead of time. Not every student will be this prepared, however, but they should not lose hope. While it would have been easier to have planned scholarships applications out sometime in advance, there are so many different scholarships for high school seniors available that they should still be able to find a relevant program with relative ease.

    High school senior scholarships come in many different forms and one of the more common types is the essay contest. Penguin USA offers one such scholarship for high school seniors in the form of their Signet Classics Student Scholarship Essay Contest. This program makes available $1,000 awards to five different winners every year. In order to be eligible for these high school senior scholarships, applicants will need to be either in 11th or 12th grade while also being between ages 16 and 18. All applicants must be United States citizens. Submitted essays must be on an assigned topic as selected by the Signet Classics high school senior scholarship committee. In 2011 the essay topics all revolve around “The Moonstone” by Wilkie Collins. The deadline for this program is April 21, 2011.

    Two different awards are made available by the scholarship for high school seniors offered through Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Teens group. One of the applicants to their Video Competition program will receive $500 and another second place winner will receive $250. All applicants are expected to be United States citizens and be between 13 to 19 years old. Submissions must be in video format and relate to a moment when students learned something about Alzheimer’s disease, learned about care giving for sufferers of the illness or when the student decided to become a community volunteer. All material must be submitted no later than December 1 of every year.

    The Posse Foundation & the Posse scholarship for high school senior program judges students using non-traditional criteria so a students true leadership abilities are exhibited in how well they work together in a team setting and how motivated they are to succeed.

    The Best Buy Scholarship for high school students will be awarding up to $1.5 million yearly for high school students and grades 9-12. The Best Buy @15 Scholarship will award up to 850 scholarships to high school seniors.

    The unique Western Union scholarships awarded 80 high school senior scholarships in 2011 and has many other types of awards with various criteria geared for students starting college.

    The Robert C Byrd Honors Scholarship Program will award up to 27,000 scholarships for students heading off to college. This government sponsored scholarship scheme may be the largest of its kind and with so many yearly awards students have more of a chance to win one as opposed to others which award one or two yearly. Run and don’t walk to apply to this one.

    The Big 33 Scholarship Foundation awards at least 150 scholarships every year. Between $500 to $4,500 are the awards. This may seem like an athletic scholarship, but this is not the case – anyone can apply and the qualifying criteria is very liberal.

    The Cargill Scholarship Program includes three different scholarships and theirs one for high school seniors. You must live nearby a Cargill business to apply. These are Community Scholarships which tend to be lenient on qualifying. Forty one time awards of $3,000 are given out yearly which makes this program very worth applying to.

    Oil Can Henry’s scholarships are one of those companies only known about by people who live around them. Their (85) locations are scattered through Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington. They will maintain your car for the general maintenance that cars need done and they are very fast and good at it too which insures your car continues to run efficiently. Oil Can Henry’s will award $1,000 high school senior scholarships for each of their (85) outlets.

    The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides awards every year through their scholarships for high school seniors. Each year fifty students nationally will be selected to receive a $20,000 coke scholarship to the school of their choice and another 200 students on a regional level will be awarded $10,000. In order to be eligible for this program, students will need to be current high school seniors and citizens of the United States. All applicants will be expected to be graduating in their application year and be carrying at least a 3.0 grade point average. Of course all students must be planning to attend college. The application period opens on August 1 and material should be turned in no later than October 31 of a given year. 2011 scholars have already been selected, however students interested in these high school senior scholarships should begin applying for the 2012 cycle as soon as it opens.

    The above senior scholarships are only a selection of many such programs available, and interested students should be sure to check with multiple foundations to get a full list of such programs. It is always in the best interest of a student to start as early as possible so do not wait until the last-minute to begin applying.

    Students of fashion who may be familiar with the retail clothing store Nordstrom may not also be aware that they may be able to get a Nordstrom scholarship for Juniors from their favorite fashion retailer. While being well dressed is not required to get access to the Nordram scholarships, being a sharp student with an outstanding personal application is. Officially in 2011 the Nordstrom scholarship was expanded to cover up to 80 high school students so the good news is that the average applicant’s chances of getting an award have officially increased. The bad news, as is often the case with scholarships like this, is that competition may remain high.

    As one of the United States’ top clothing retailers, Nordstrom scholarships have been offered for a number of years as the company has been in the black. The program represents one of several community outreach program that the chain offers to help young people achieve their dreams or enhance their local areas. While students are able to apply to the Nordstrom scholarship online, all interested parties should check in with their school’s guidance counselor to see if their school participates directly in the Nordstrom scholarship program. If they do not students should not be disheartened, the process just may not be as streamlined as it otherwise would be.

    Nordstrom operates full line stores in 28 states in the United States, and the Nordstrom scholarship will only be available in those states. Interested applicants can check the official Nordstrom website for locations or do a simple Google search to see if a store is available in their state. Nordstrom scholarships will be given to 80 students in 2011 for a total of $10,000 to each award winner. This amount is not given out immediately but rather paid out in installments of $2,500 each year for four years to the school an awardee is attending.

    In order to be eligible for the program students must be a high school junior and be maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.7. Applicants must be very active in their local community or have spent a good amount of time as a volunteer. A financial need must be indicated by a student being prepared to file formally for financial assistance through FAFSA once the student has been accepted to a university. Students cannot be convicted of any crimes and should be planning to attend a single four year university for the entire time they will be in college. All application material is due no later than May 16, 2011 and the process opens officially on March 15.

    All entries for Nordstrom scholarships are judged on a regional level by panels consisting of local community leaders. Those students who have their applications accepted into the finalist pool will be interviewed in person by the selection committee in which their essay and submitted materials may come up. Because the applications are standard forms amongst all students, there is little room outside of leadership activities or volunteer projects applicants have been involved in which can be used to set an individual apart. Fortunately the essay portion of the application looks for a student to describe a character defining moment, cultural awareness developed over time or personal hardships that have overcome. This essay can be used very effectively to set an individual applicant apart from others, so do not simply start the process and ad lib the entire submission. Rather students should sit down and plan this out carefully – how have volunteer activities impacted an applicant’s cultural awareness, or how have community activities built the applicant’s character? Weigh these topics out carefully and, if possible, write an essay on each topic.

    Once an essay on each topic has been written, students should review their work and submit that material which represents them the best. Students who have been incredibly active in their community and have built up a lot of experiences through volunteer work will have the best chances of winning a Nordstrom scholarship. As a result it is important to be active in the community and have the experiences necessary to draw on for the purposes of this application.

    Western Union scholarships come in only a few forms and, while Western Union’s philanthropic giving spans many different categories, are only available to people based on very specific criteria. Though in the past Western Union Scholarships have been offered for many different purposes both nationally in the United States and around the world, their giving with regards to educational financial aid has decreased since 2006. Despite this there are still Western Union scholarships which students should be able to gain access to depending on what their lives are like and where exactly they fit in.

    Three Western Union scholarships exist in the United States – their family scholarship, the Greater Washington Urban Leage scholarship, and a program offered through a company called HyVee. Each of these programs is fairly limited in who can apply whether it be targeted at immigrant families, employees of a company or restricted to a specific metro region. However those students who may find themselves eligible for the program are certainly encouraged to apply. Previous Western Union scholarships have existed with other organizations, but, in part because of the push into their family scholarship, many of these programs are now indefinitely closed.

    The main, directly offered scholarship at Western Union is a family oriented program which targets immigrants and migrants in the United States. This program offers scholarships to two members of a single family either to help with tuition at school or other education related expenses. Western Union family scholarships do not exceed $5,000 per family winning an award, and the amount is divided between the two awardees, though not in equal amounts. Disbursed amounts are given depending on financial need. For instance if a family member is attending school full time and their brother or sister is simply taking English as a Second Language courses, the largest sum of the award will be given to the full time student. In order to be eligible for this program applicants will need to have resided in the US for at least seven years, have been born outside of the country and currently living in certain cities in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Washing DC or Florida. Citizenship is not required. All applicants will need to demonstrate financial need and submit the applications for both family members applying before April 21, 2011.

    The Greater Washington Urban League offers Western Union scholarships in collaboration with Safeway Inc. Unfortunately the information on the Greater Washington Urban League website is out of date, but awards were given out in Washington DC as recently as March 17, 2011 so students will hopefully be reassured that the program is still on track. Every year the GWUL holds a gala event to raise money to ensure the program is available and, in 2011, the 39th annual gala was indeed held. This Western Union scholarship awards up to $3,000 to on average six different applicants. In order to be eligible applicants must have families who make less than $35,000 a year, maintain a 2.5 grade point average, be very active as a volunteer in the community and provide high school transcripts. Though the 2011 awards have been given out, interested applicants should contact Audrey Epperson in October 2011 to see if the program will be available again in 2012 and if the deadline will still be February 12.

    In 2011 the HyVee Company partnered with Western Union to provide 80 $1,000 Western Union scholarships to high school seniors preparing to enroll in college. While there are no promises that the program will be available in 2012, interested applicants should stay tuned. In order to be eligible for this Western Union Scholarship a student will need to be a high school senior working for HyVee or be a child of a HyVee employee. All applicants must be enrolling in college for the first time. Under the same banner this scholarship from Western Union is also available for college students who are already enrolled in a university attending full time with at least sophomore standing. The annual deadline for this program is February 10.

    As a junior high school student, applying to a college or university as well as for college scholarships for high school juniors starts TODAY. Because of today’s unaffordable and sky-rocketing costs of tuition, applying for and actually winning a high school junior scholarship is as competitive as ever. To get your start, you need to research those majors and career paths that interest you. Next, talk to a guidance counselor at your school and discuss with them your interests you wish to pursue as soon as you end your high school career. After this discussion, begin to study, prepare for, and take the ACT and SAT, depending on which school interests you. After this is achieved, and you’ve begun the process of applying to various colleges (a top 10 list of schools to apply for is recommended), researching and applying for high school junior scholarship applications are your final step the process of applying to colleges and winning the college scholarship of your choice depending on which high school junior scholarship you are applying for as well as the requirements you need to follow.

    Consider the fact that there are thousands of available HS junior scholarships out there for high school students. It is up to you to investigate which ones you think would apply to your situation, career goals or interests. Even if you do not know what you are looking for, if you are eligible for an award, apply for them. You never know if you will win one or not.

    If you do not know where to find information on college scholarships for high school juniors, you can talk to your guidance counselor and research books on high school scholarships for juniors and awards at the library or go to unknown scholarships which gives some great tips on creative ways on finding money to help pay for college. This site also will give a listing of obscure scholarships that are available throughout the year and awarded the following year that you are applying. It is best to apply for any college scholarship for a month before or starting in the fall of your junior high school year.     National Merit Scholarships are college scholarships for high school juniors that are open to virtually all high school students who have plans to graduate and go to college or university. Applicants can be a natural born or a non-US citizen. Awards of $2500 are usually given out from March until June annually as a single payment to at least 100-700 winners depending on the type of high school scholarship applied for to the National Merit Scholarships Committee.

    The Best Buy 15 Scholarship offers $1000 scholarships for high school juniors who plan to enroll into a university full-time in the United States. Those students who win these HS scholarships are based on their academics, volunteerism, and work experience. The period to apply is by March of every year with winners announced in May.

    The C-Span StudentCam Scholarship Competition is a special high school junior scholarship competition in which the applicant must make a 5-8 minute video documentary on a specific topic selected for that competition period. These videos must include a C-SPAN video as part of the entry. 75 winners are chosen and at least $50,000 in scholarship money is given out to those the winners. The deadline for these videos must be received and submitted to C-SPAN by January of each year.

    The Discover Scholarship Program gives out at least 10 high school junior scholarships of $25,000 to students that show outstanding performance in academics (with at least a 2.75 GPA), leadership, community service as well as personal obstacles. The deadline for this HS scholarship is January 31 of every year.

    The Voice of Democracy Scholarship is a $30,000 scholarship open to high school juniors who attend and study in high schools and study programs within the United States. Eligible students must write out an essay, and record a reading of their essay on a CD that should be 3-5 minutes long based on a theme chosen by the VFW who sponsors the award that is given annually to hundreds of students every year. The deadline for this year’s essay with the theme “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military” is November 1, 2011.

    These are just a few well known scholarships which can be applied to for high school juniors but there are many coming out weekly so do some more searching and see which ones might be right for you.

  • VFW Scholarships for Veterans Children

    If you’re under the impression that only VFW scholarships for Veterans children can only apply for a VFW scholarship, then think again, because any child can enter into the VFW scholarship program and have a chance to win. That’s right! You can apply to the VFW scholarships even if you or your parents never served in the armed forces for the US military. It seems a little odd why this may be the case because after all, the VFW does have it’s very own special privilege’s by being a member; which is having served in overseas military assignments.

    If you look below the service then you may clearly see why that the VFW Scholarships for Veterans Children is open to all children and not only children of those who served in foreign wars for the US. The reason the VFW invites any child; non-member as well as members, to participate in these essay contest is in the subject matter in which the contest is written on – patriotism! The annual theme will ALWAYS be related to patriotism. The VFW is a patriotic organization and they try to foster patriotism any way they can. This is a great way to do it too, and in a noble fashion – by offering essay writing contest in hopes of winning VFW scholarships.

    The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, along with its partners, has 2.2 million members in approximately 8,100 Posts worldwide. The VFW mission is to “honor the dead by helping the living” through veterans’ service, community service, national security and a strong national defense. Providing scholarships is wonderful community service and creates goodwill and patriotism towards the US military, especially when their’s an active war going on and lives are being lost.

    The Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition
    This is the VFW premier scholarship program. It’s a high school scholarship. Audio/Essay & broadcast contest for grades 9 – 12 in which applicants write and record a broadcast script on a patriotic theme. Three million in VFW scholarships awarded yearly & over 100,000 students normally compete. Nov. 1st is entry deadline.

    The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
    This is for grades 6 – 8 and is an essay contest in which applicants express their view on democracy. Estimated $115,000 students compete annually. Nov. 1st is entry deadline.

    VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship
    For Boy Scouts only. Must have received a Boy Scout Eagle Award, a Venture Scouting Silver Award or a Sea Scout Quartermaster Award to participate in this VFW scholarship. This scholarship program is more specific in nature and is not nearly as accessible as the Patriot’s Pen & the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.     The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Scholarship Program
    The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US is the Womans equivalent to the VFW, but only has approximately 581,245 members and is just as influential in the community as the VFW. They are involved in other activities in which the VFW does not get directly involved, but their mission is very similar. There is ‘The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Scholarship Program’ which highlights (3) scholarships for grades 9 – 12. These VFW scholarships are application type scholarships and are judged based on a girls passed activities such as ‘Junior Unit Activities’, ‘School Activities’, and ‘Scholastic Grades’. The three VFW ladies scholarships are:

    2. Young American Creative Patriotic Art
    3. Continuing Education Scholarship

    VFW Military Family Scholarship Program
    This VFW scholarship program has recently been retired by the VFW (07-01-2009). The program provided (25) $3,000 scholarships each year to VFW members who are currently serving in uniform or have been discharged within the (36) months prior to the December 31 deadline.
