It’s a beautiful day to be awarded an unknown and potentially unclaimed Fred Rogers Memorial scholarship Grant. Most adults remember the kindly older man changing his shoes and singing “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” This song, played daily on television from 1967 to 2001, was one of his legacies that most of us will remember for the rest of our lives. In fact, he had such an impact on the world of television that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation has taken the unusual step of offering a study scholarship in his honor.
This scholarship, known as the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship, is offered to three students each academic year. All Fred Rogers scholarship awards are $10,000 each, and are designated for students who are undergraduate juniors or seniors, or are enrolled in graduate school. In addition to winning the Rogers scholarship, students will be mentored by an Academy professional who specializes in children’s television programming.
Mentors from the Los Angeles or New York Academy will be chosen for each student. Typically, a mentor is assigned based on his/her geographical proximity to the student receiving the award. The student and mentor will meet personally, and communicate through telephone and email regularly.
The goal of this award is to remember and honor the memory of Mr. Fred Rogers. In addition, the Academy hopes to help qualified students begin a career in children’s media, and to promote those values and principles which were demonstrated by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Ernst and Young, LLP, are funding this generous scholarship for students.
To apply for this college essay scholarship, an interested student may print out and submit a Fred Rogers scholarship application to the Academy. Students who are awarded this Rogers award must demonstrate a commitment to early childhood education, development, or psychology. They must be pursuing careers in film, television or animation. Successful applicants will desire ultimately to work in career fields related to children’s media.
Additionally, students who come from rural or inner city households will be given higher preference. Students are required to write an essay of up to two pages addressing how they meet the stated Fred Roger scholarship requirements. In addition, they must describe a plan for using the scholarship to help them develop their education in one of three major areas. These areas include research regarding children’s media and personal growth; development of creative concepts in children’s programming; or a professional internship for personal educational growth.
In order to win the Fred Rogers grant for students, two recommendations from faculty or children’s media must be included with the Rogers scholarship application. The Academy will be responsible for reviewing the applications and determining who will receive scholarship awards. If no one is qualified to receive the award in a particular year, the Fred Rogers Memorial scholarship will not be awarded. It would be too bad if it became an unclaimed scholarship.
If you’re interested in pursuing a career in children’s television programming or film media, don’t let this unknown unusual scholarship opportunity go unclaimed to lessen your college expense. Honor the memory of Mr. Rogers and the Land of Make-Believe. Start teaching children how to be a good neighbor with a real-life Fred Rogers college scholarship that will make paying for your college education much easier.

For the most part, grants for college students will not cover all of your tuition. In many cases, they are simply a great way to defer some of the cost. I know that the grant I received for college was small, but in the end it did help. I believe one of them was for $1200 a semester. Even though this may seem like a small amount, this is money I will never have to pay back in the future.
