The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a tuition award funded for students who are eligible to receive federal Pell Grants. These undergraduate scholarships for study abroad grants are primarily intended for people who want to study in countries other than those in Western Europe or Australia. The average dollar amount of these awards is $4,000, and more than 1,200 financial aid scholarships will be awarded this year.

If your study area is focused in a language of critical need (these languages include, among others, Arabic, Chinese, Persian, and Russian), you are eligible for an additional award of up to $3,000 from this study abroad program scholarship foundation. Last year 50 Critical Need Language Supplement scholarships for studying abroad were awarded. The number of supplement awards has been increased for the 2008-2009 school year.

Another unusual grant scholarship is the National Security Education Program’s Boren Awards for International Study. This program offers both undergraduate and graduate study abroad scholarships to U.S. students who are interested in studying in areas that are critical to U.S. Interests. Language Flagship Fellowships are available only to graduate students who will have completed their undergraduate degrees by the academic year following the scholarship award. Students must demonstrate a minimum oral proficiency in the language they intend to study, and not be employed by the United States government. People who have previously received Boren scholarships are encouraged to apply for this tuition scholarship.

Students who receive these Flagship fellowships will study for one year in the U.S., and one year abroad. They are expected to put all of their effort into learning from the study abroad fellowship, and are not permitted to work on other degree requirements during the learning period. In addition, these fellowships must not be combined with other sources of funding. These unusually generous awards offer paid tuition with a living stipend, health coverage, and travel allowances throughout the length of the fellowship.
