  • Lowe’s Scholarships are Plentiful

     lowes scholarships
    Lowe’s Scholarships

Lowe’s scholarships are a great way to help pay for college. Each year there are several Lowe’s scholarship winners, and you could be one of them. Some of their scholarships are offered to undergraduate students that are about to start their junior or senior year of college. All applicants must be in mathematics areas of study. This can include finance and statistics.

Applications are due by November 3rd to be eligible for funding for the following fall of school. Applicants can turn in their applications though starting in June of that year. Completing the application for Lowe’s scholarship during the summer when you don’t have school work to do is a great idea.

Lowe’s offers about $600,000 in scholarships to students annually. They offer many scholarships on community levels too. As a result, you are often competing for them on a regional level. That means your chances of being awarded such a scholarship by Lowe’s is huge. It may not be the overall scholarships that two students earn, but some money for college is certainly better than not getting any at all.

Each year they offer 140 Lowe scholarships to those that are high school seniors and plan to enroll in a full time undergraduate study at an accredited college. Students must have at least a 3.25 GPA, show work experience, show leadership, and show community involvement.

The Carl Buchanan Lowe’s scholarships are for $5,000 each. They are awarded to 50 high school seniors that will be attending an undergraduate study program at an accredited college. This particular Lowe scholarship though is only offered to part time or full time employees of Lowe’s. Dependents of employees are also eligible to apply.

Applicants also need to have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and show some experience with work, volunteering, leadership, and community projects. Lowe’s scholarships can be used for two year colleges, four year colleges, and technical schools. The funds can be used for books, tuition, fees, supplies, and labs.

Students can apply each year for a Lowe’s scholarship, but they aren’t renewable. This means if you are awarded one it won’t automatically mean you can get those funds the next year. You have to complete a new Lowes scholarship application. It is possible for students to transfer colleges and receive funds through the Lowe’s scholarship program. It is recommended to contact them for such details about how to do so.

All winners of Lowe’s scholarships also make a commitment to help with promoting mathematics to students in the grades of kindergarten through 12th grade. To do this, all winners agree to volunteer at a local school to mentor in that area for a period of time not less than 2 hours per week.

The amount of money that a recipient will earn through a Lowe’s scholarship depends on several variables. This includes their financial situation and their academic enrollment costs. The scholarships range in award from $1,000 to $3,000 per winner.

There are several Lowe’s scholarships so make sure you read through all of the qualifications for the different ones. If you find several that you qualify for, and then apply for all of them. You never know what all you could be accepted for unless you give it a try. The amount of money you have for college through scholarships means less working, less student loans, and less stress as you navigate through your educational path.

Now is the time to get your Lowe’s scholarship application completed. You want to make sure you are able to have the best possible chance of winning some of the funds they have to offer. With Lowe’s scholarships, you will have more funding for college than you did before.

That is certainly a step in the right direction, so don’t overlook the possibility. The Lowe’s Scholarship 2011 winners are Joshua Harwood and Dario Biasini. Perhaps next year it will be your name that is here as one of the winners!

  • Xerox Scholarships

    xerox-scholarships
    Xerox Scholarships

Xerox scholarships for minorities, offered by the copy machine giant of international renown, are available for multiple students from a diverse background. Interested in seeing students join their workforce who have technical know-how, Xerox scholarships for students tend to focus on degree seeking programs in computer science or other technical degrees. The rewards from a Xerox scholarship tend to be pretty high, though the number of scholarships available is not always equally as high. Students will find that a Xerox scholarship is sometimes available through specific institutions, but the bulk of their scholarship money is dedicated to national programs. Students who are ethnic minorities or interested in technical degrees will find a Xerox technical minority scholarship which will suit their needs nicely.

One of the biggest Xerox scholarships available comes in the form of their minority program. This Xerox minority scholarship provides from $1,000 up to $10,000 to a varying number of students every year who are interested in getting a bachelor’s degree in a technical field. During the 2010-2011 academic year, over 60 different students received one of these minority scholarships from Xerox. All applicants interested in the program will need to have at least a 3.0 grade point average, be an ethnic minority, and working towards an undergraduate degree in a specifically acceptable field. Fields of choice are in the hard sciences such as chemistry or physics and other fields such as computer engineering. A complete list of applicable degree programs is available on the Xerox website under the Frequently Asked Questions section. The deadline for submitted an application to this program no later than September 30.

The Xerox College Experiential learning Program (XCEL) is another great scholarship program offered directly by the Xerox Company focusing on technical fields or business learning. Students getting this particular Xerox scholarship will be responsible for working at the company through internships or work study positions. This corporate scholarship pays students based on hours worked or through a credit exchange program with the host college. In order to be eligible for this particular Xerox scholarship students will need to have a 3.0 grade point average, pass a drug test, and be able to legally work in the United States. This program operates on a rolling basis, and students will be able to apply to it throughout the year depending on what type of work they are interested in doing. While not a scholarship program exactly, it does work much like FAFSA work study programs in which students get access to funds by working at an academic institution. In this case students not only receive money which they can use for school or other educational needs, but they also gain valuable experiences and insights by participating in the program.

Apart from those two programs, there are not many other nationally available Xerox programs. What generally is the case is that Xerox may from time to time offer grants to educational institutions which may then be used to establish scholarship programs. The company also has a number of programs it operates internally which are not scholarships but will give students access to valuable experiences in the work place. The Xerox Student Careers website is a great place for students interested in engineering or business fields to take a look at. It gives not only details on the company’s minority scholarship but also introduces students to their future careers.

Students interested in Xerox scholarships can always attempt to find one at their local university, though with the limited amount of such programs that exist they will be unlikely to find one. In 2010 grants were given to North Carolina, Howard University, Spelman College and Morgan State University to give access to education to minority students. Additional grant money was given to California Polytech, City College of New York and the University of Central Florida through a different program targeting specifically Hispanic students. While Xerox is interested in hiring good workers, their giving tends to be heavily biased towards creating opportunities for minority students interested in technical degrees.

  • IBM Scholarship Programs

    ibm-scholarships
    IBM Scholarships

An IBM scholarship program comes in a few different forms, focusing on IT development and computer science. While there are some programs available on broad scale many of the programs are limited to specific colleges or through the company’s employee programs. Students who are interested in IT should certainly consider these programs as viable options when applying for financial assistance, especially if there is an applicable IBM scholarship program available through their local institution. All students should be very careful when looking through potential scholarships as there is a plethora of IBM scholarships which have been previously available through various organizations but are no longer applicable. Doing a simple search for IBM scholarships will result in a lot of these programs which may still have active application portals but are no longer available for students to get funding from. As a result students will need to check out the application details very carefully and, if necessary, contact the administrator of a particular IBM scholarship just to double-check on whether or not it is still available.

Despite the confusing amount of old scholarships which are still available around the web, discerning students will be able to save time by looking only for those scholarships which are available in their academic year. As a brief example, students who are looking to apply for scholarships in the 2012 academic year should look for IBM scholarships 2012.

Offered for several years the Herman Goldstein fellowship IBM scholarship is generally available in every academic year. Only two different awards will be given out but the fellowship provides at max a $115,000 stipend and allows post-graduate students to continue their studies in an official capacity through IBM. Students around the world are able to apply for this program and must provide a full resume of their studies, an abstract of their dissertation, a three page research statement and three letters of recommendation. No central eligibility requirements stand for this program. Applications for this IBM scholarship open on October 26 and all material must be received no later than January 6 of the following year.

Another useful IBM scholarship focuses on women in the IT field who are undergraduates considering graduate education through the American Physical Society. This program is designed to offer an internship for women students at an IBM research facility of their choice. Applicants must be a female at either the sophomore or junior levels of their education, be majoring in science or a computer engineering oriented field, and have at least a 3.0 grade point average in order to be eligible for the IBM scholarship program. The deadline for this program is February 1.

The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is an IBM scholarship designed to support post-graduate students in the pursuit of further academic studies. All applicants must be a member of a member school, be a graduating senior and be nominated by their academic institution. This IBM Watson scholarship awards $25,000 for single applicants or up to $35,000 for those fellows who also must support a family. The yearly deadline for this program is November 3.

IBM scholarships are relatively limited in who they provide funding for. Many of their programs come in the form of fellowships for advanced students looking to continue their education and research in a formal business setting. Students who are interested in an IBM scholarship should have sincere research goals and be willing to work within the organization. In many instances winners of these programs will be working at IBM or interning in an IBM facility for a limited amount of time. The benefit of these programs is that they will give students hands on experience in the field and help buff up a resume for future employment. Because IBM scholarships are relatively rare but generally provide an immense amount of funding, students would be wise to prepare their applications very carefully. It will be important to ensure that applications offer a clear direction and clearly explain exactly what a student is interested in getting out of the experience.

  • Sallie Mae Scholarships for Minorities

    sallie-mae-scholarship
    Sallie Mae Scholarships

Sallie Mae scholarships are provided for students through the Sallie Mae Scholarship Fund, a non-profit charity which works to increase access to college to students in the United States. All Sallie Mae scholarships for minorities work hard to achieve this goal by targeting financially needy students, minorities and other groups which may not have equal access to college opportunities. Initiatives within these minority scholarships are often designed to support community involvement or volunteer activities so students who are interested in applying to a Sallie Mae scholarship would be well advised to be active in their local communities.

Sallie Mae is a top financial services company which specializes in education. They offer creative educational savings tools, tuition payment plans and student loans. Since 2001 over 6,350 students have received Sallie Mae scholarships averaging out to around 635 awards a year. Because of the national nature of these programs competition is going to be relatively high, so students who are interested in applying should prepare applications which best represent their volunteerism and dedication to their local communities. Though this is not a guaranteed way of getting a Sallie Mae scholarship, matching an applicant’s history with the initiatives and interests of the organization will certainly help quite a bit along the way. Also important to understand in this process is that, while nearly all of the Sallie Mae scholarships are currently closed, they open back up frequently and interested students should really pay close attention to make sure they do not miss upcoming deadlines.

There are five main Sallie Mae scholarships for minorities offered by the fund almost every year, one of which is the American Dream Scholarship Program. In collaboration with the United Negro College Fund this Sallie Mae Scholarship is open to black students who can display strong financial need. All applicants must be a United States resident and maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average. Students must also be attending school full-time at an accredited university. Award amounts vary between $500 and $5,000. Though this program is currently closed, students should watch both the UNCF and the Sallie Mae scholarship website for when it may reopen.

Another one of the main Sallie Mae scholarships for minority students is the First in My Family Scholarship Program. This program provides funding to financially needy students who are the first in their family to be attending college. Eligibility requires that students be Hispanic Americans who are legal US citizens. All applicants must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. This program provides between $500 and $5,000 to those who receive an award. This program is currently closed but may reopen in 2011 or 2012, so stay tuned.

The Sallie Mae Unmet Need Scholarship for minorities is open only to those families who make less than $30,000 a year. As it stands the Unmet Need Scholarship is not meant to represent a sole source of financial aid and as such only provides $1,000 to $3,000. In order to be eligible for the program students will need to be US residents attending full-time at an accredited university. The grade point average of the applicant must be no lower than 2.5 and award amounts will be determined on relative financial need. This Sallie Mae is currently closed with no 2011 deadline, but as it is still on the Sallie Mae website it should be pretty clear that the program has hopes of being reopened.

Community College Transfer Scholarship for minorities exists to offer students making the transition from a two-year institution to a four-year one. Often the cost difference between community colleges and four-year universities can be extreme, and this Sallie Mae scholarship should be able to help defray some of those costs. This program exists in collaboration with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund under the General College scholarships section. It awards between $1,000 and $5,000 to winners of the scholarship. In order to be eligible students must be transferring from a community college, be of Hispanic heritage, have at least a 3.0 grade point average and intend to enroll full-time at a four-year university. Though the deadline for this program has passed for 2011, students are encouraged to look in September of 2011 to see if it will be offered again.

  • Wells Fargo Scholarships

    wells-fargo-scholarships
    Wells Fargo Scholarships

Though often in the business of giving out students loans, Wells Fargo scholarships are available from one of the nation’s largest banks as well. Like many other companies, Wells Fargo has a separate foundation which invests money in many different sources including their Wells Fargo scholarship through particular partnerships. In the past these partnerships have included groups like the Hispanic Scholarship Fund but, similar to some other foundations, Wells Fargo Scholarships are not always long term and may not be renewed. Despite this, students who are interested in a Wells Fargo scholarship will find a diverse amount of offerings in 2011 and 2012. Beyond these years students should always pay close attention to what scholarships are being offered by the organization, and be careful to double check dates. Very often older scholarships will remain on the internet despite no longer being offered. It is important to be able to quickly identify only those bank scholarships which are currently being offered so that students will be able to maximize both their time and their applications.

One of the programs which have been offered for a number of years in the form of a Wells Fargo scholarship is offered directly by the company under their CollegeSTEPS program. The program is limited to those students who are in high school and are interested in enrolling in a four year university. This college scholarship from Wells Fargo works more along the lines of a sweepstakes than a merit based program, but because it offers what is in essence free money for school with very little work on the part of the applicant, students should be incredibly interested in the opportunity. In order to enter the program students simply must enroll in the Wells Fargo CollegeSTEPS program which will provide email updates to individuals on financial aid offerings, study methods and open campus visits. Just by enrolling into the program students will be automatically enrolled for a chance to win $1,000 towards college. Getting useful tips for college and having very little effort on the part of students makes this opportunity worth looking into. Four drawings are made every year and in each drawing five students are selected for awards. As the program operates on a rolling basis, students do not have to be overly concerned about deadlines. However, to better maximize their chances students should enroll before February 4 in order to get a chance in every drawing.

Native Americans will be interested to know that in 2005 a scholarship fund was established in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) to create a Wells Fargo scholarship at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants must be an enrolled member of a recognized American Indian tribe, as well as be going to school for a degree in banking, resort management, gaming operations or administration. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average and meet Pell Grant eligibility requirements. The award amount for this program varies according to financial need and all materials must be turned in no later than June 1, 2011.

The Pride Foundation has an established partnership with Wells Fargo and gives out Wells Fargo scholarships every year. Though the 2011 scholarship cycle with the Pride Foundation has ended, there are strong indications that the award will be offered again in 2012. The criteria for this Wells Fargo scholarship are pretty basic – students must be enrolled in college and be actively involved in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender movement. Straight allies who are actively involved will be considered for a Wells Fargo scholarship as well. All applicants must be residents of the United States though those students looking to attend school outside of the US can still apply so long as they have residency in the country. Awards can go as high as $10,000 but the average tends to be around $3,300. The deadline for this Wells Fargo scholarship is January 31 of every year, and students would be wise to stay tuned to 2012.

  • Nordstrom Scholarships for Juniors

    nordstrom-scholarships
    Nordstrom Scholarships

Students of fashion who may be familiar with the retail clothing store Nordstrom may not also be aware that they may be able to get a Nordstrom scholarship for Juniors from their favorite fashion retailer. While being well dressed is not required to get access to the Nordram scholarships, being a sharp student with an outstanding personal application is. Officially in 2011 the Nordstrom scholarship was expanded to cover up to 80 high school students so the good news is that the average applicant’s chances of getting an award have officially increased. The bad news, as is often the case with scholarships like this, is that competition may remain high.

As one of the United States’ top clothing retailers, Nordstrom scholarships have been offered for a number of years as the company has been in the black. The program represents one of several community outreach program that the chain offers to help young people achieve their dreams or enhance their local areas. While students are able to apply to the Nordstrom scholarship online, all interested parties should check in with their school’s guidance counselor to see if their school participates directly in the Nordstrom scholarship program. If they do not students should not be disheartened, the process just may not be as streamlined as it otherwise would be.

Nordstrom operates full line stores in 28 states in the United States, and the Nordstrom scholarship will only be available in those states. Interested applicants can check the official Nordstrom website for locations or do a simple Google search to see if a store is available in their state. Nordstrom scholarships will be given to 80 students in 2011 for a total of $10,000 to each award winner. This amount is not given out immediately but rather paid out in installments of $2,500 each year for four years to the school an awardee is attending.

In order to be eligible for the program students must be a high school junior and be maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.7. Applicants must be very active in their local community or have spent a good amount of time as a volunteer. A financial need must be indicated by a student being prepared to file formally for financial assistance through FAFSA once the student has been accepted to a university. Students cannot be convicted of any crimes and should be planning to attend a single four year university for the entire time they will be in college. All application material is due no later than May 16, 2011 and the process opens officially on March 15.

All entries for Nordstrom scholarships are judged on a regional level by panels consisting of local community leaders. Those students who have their applications accepted into the finalist pool will be interviewed in person by the selection committee in which their essay and submitted materials may come up. Because the applications are standard forms amongst all students, there is little room outside of leadership activities or volunteer projects applicants have been involved in which can be used to set an individual apart. Fortunately the essay portion of the application looks for a student to describe a character defining moment, cultural awareness developed over time or personal hardships that have overcome. This essay can be used very effectively to set an individual applicant apart from others, so do not simply start the process and ad lib the entire submission. Rather students should sit down and plan this out carefully – how have volunteer activities impacted an applicant’s cultural awareness, or how have community activities built the applicant’s character? Weigh these topics out carefully and, if possible, write an essay on each topic.

Once an essay on each topic has been written, students should review their work and submit that material which represents them the best. Students who have been incredibly active in their community and have built up a lot of experiences through volunteer work will have the best chances of winning a Nordstrom scholarship. As a result it is important to be active in the community and have the experiences necessary to draw on for the purposes of this application.

  • Western Union Scholarships

    western-union-scholarships
    Western Union Scholarships

Western Union scholarships come in only a few forms and, while Western Union’s philanthropic giving spans many different categories, are only available to people based on very specific criteria. Though in the past Western Union Scholarships have been offered for many different purposes both nationally in the United States and around the world, their giving with regards to educational financial aid has decreased since 2006. Despite this there are still Western Union scholarships which students should be able to gain access to depending on what their lives are like and where exactly they fit in.

Three Western Union scholarships exist in the United States – their family scholarship, the Greater Washington Urban Leage scholarship, and a program offered through a company called HyVee. Each of these programs is fairly limited in who can apply whether it be targeted at immigrant families, employees of a company or restricted to a specific metro region. However those students who may find themselves eligible for the program are certainly encouraged to apply. Previous Western Union scholarships have existed with other organizations, but, in part because of the push into their family scholarship, many of these programs are now indefinitely closed.

The main, directly offered scholarship at Western Union is a family oriented program which targets immigrants and migrants in the United States. This program offers scholarships to two members of a single family either to help with tuition at school or other education related expenses. Western Union family scholarships do not exceed $5,000 per family winning an award, and the amount is divided between the two awardees, though not in equal amounts. Disbursed amounts are given depending on financial need. For instance if a family member is attending school full time and their brother or sister is simply taking English as a Second Language courses, the largest sum of the award will be given to the full time student. In order to be eligible for this program applicants will need to have resided in the US for at least seven years, have been born outside of the country and currently living in certain cities in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Washing DC or Florida. Citizenship is not required. All applicants will need to demonstrate financial need and submit the applications for both family members applying before April 21, 2011.

The Greater Washington Urban League offers Western Union scholarships in collaboration with Safeway Inc. Unfortunately the information on the Greater Washington Urban League website is out of date, but awards were given out in Washington DC as recently as March 17, 2011 so students will hopefully be reassured that the program is still on track. Every year the GWUL holds a gala event to raise money to ensure the program is available and, in 2011, the 39th annual gala was indeed held. This Western Union scholarship awards up to $3,000 to on average six different applicants. In order to be eligible applicants must have families who make less than $35,000 a year, maintain a 2.5 grade point average, be very active as a volunteer in the community and provide high school transcripts. Though the 2011 awards have been given out, interested applicants should contact Audrey Epperson in October 2011 to see if the program will be available again in 2012 and if the deadline will still be February 12.

In 2011 the HyVee Company partnered with Western Union to provide 80 $1,000 Western Union scholarships to high school seniors preparing to enroll in college. While there are no promises that the program will be available in 2012, interested applicants should stay tuned. In order to be eligible for this Western Union Scholarship a student will need to be a high school senior working for HyVee or be a child of a HyVee employee. All applicants must be enrolling in college for the first time. Under the same banner this scholarship from Western Union is also available for college students who are already enrolled in a university attending full time with at least sophomore standing. The annual deadline for this program is February 10.

  • Discover Card Scholarships for Unique Students

    Discover Card Scholarship
    Discover Card Scholarship

The Discover Card Scholarship is for the student who is thinking ahead in paying for his/her college tuition. Scholarships are designed to meet many needs and in some cases fill particular niches. One of the most important things to do when looking for college funding is to start early, especially in high school, to try and find unique scholarship programs. As is the case with the Discover Card Scholarships Program, if you wait until the last minute to find funding for school, you may quickly realize that you have missed the boat.

    [ad]

Looking at the scholarship by Discover Card in 9th grade, for example, it would be easy to set your goals early, understanding that over the course of the next two years you will want to build your grade point average up above a 2.75 while also getting involved in community oriented projects. Because so little information is available on the Discover Scholarship Program homepage, you would also need to take some time to do some digging in order to get a better handle on who has won and why.

Getting access to scholarships is not simply as easy as happening upon them randomly and then hoping that you meet the criteria. While it’s always possible that you may have randomly fallen into what they are looking for, your best bet is always to plan carefully.

In 2011, the company which brings us the Discover Card is providing a scholarship for high school juniors towards their college education, the maximum award being $25,000. Apart from the specifics on a minimum required GPA, it can be difficult to understand what exactly they mean by clubs or community groups. Taking a look at previous winners of the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship will help you build up on the particulars.

Consider the case of Natasha Mathurin, a 2010 winner of the Discover Scholarship. In her biography as provided by the Discover program, it becomes quickly clear that Natasha was not simply a member of a school group or that she did the bare minimum required of her person. Ms. Mathurin was involved in leadership roles, brought in new members, was active in volunteering in public activities and, despite a learning disability she was diagnosed with earlier in life, has struggled hard to achieve everything she has accomplished.

Moving from Natasha and considering Juan Acosta, another 2010 Discover College Scholarship winner, we see yet another example of a student involved in leadership roles while overcoming obstacles in his life. As a legal immigrant to the country at a young age, Mr. Acosta had to learn English while also overcoming a cataract on his left eye. Despite these troubles, he learned English and eventually was accepted into his school’s gifted program, along the way taking up leadership roles in school clubs and volunteering at a local rehab center.

In each of the above cases, commonality becomes a direction, showing young applicants what others are capable of and suggesting to them a positive direction for their own future. The Discover Card Scholarships are available to students who have encountered obstacles in their lives and overcome them, while at the same time rising up to meet new challenges of their own. The earlier a student starts along this path, the better their chances of getting this nationally offered unique scholarship, and for a maximum potential payout of $25,000, it is important to start thinking about their future as soon as they can. The 2011 deadline for the Discover Card Scholarship Program is January 31.

    [ad]

If you are a student planning on applying for this unique scholarship program later in your high school career, keep your eyes on the website and watch the future winners for ideas of what you can do to increase your chances of winning. Step up into leadership positions, and realize that obstacles are rarely insurmountable. Such challenges are normal in life, and in this case may help you achieve funding for your future college education through the Discover Card Scholarships.

    Computer Science Scholarships

Luckily, there are actually many scholarships for computer science students available for you in this area, but you need to work very hard on your applications, and the requirements for eligibility as there are many computer science students all vying for the same scholarship opportunities these days. You definitely need to set yourself apart from the rest of the applicants.

If you are a female or a minority student, you should definitely check out the Entertainment Software Association Foundation Computer and Video Game Scholarship Program. This organization awards 30 scholarships, in the amount of $3000 annually. Fifteen of these scholarships will go to high school students who meet the eligibility requirements, and the other fifteen will go to those students who are already attending college in the field of computer science.

Xerox also gives scholarships for computer science, and these awards can range anywhere from $1000 to $10,000 annually. These awards are typically made to minority students who are studying in the appropriate field, and who have maintained an adequate GPA.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is a popular scholarship for those who are studying in the field of Computer Science. This fund awards hundreds of scholarships each year. Some computer science scholarships are for one year, and some are for two years and all scholarship awards are worth about $7500 each. These awards are made to undergraduate students, and as a computer science major, this is most likely one of the first scholarships that you should apply for.

Naturally, you should check out scholarships that are available from companies that have a strong presence in the Computer industry, such as the Microsoft scholarships, Apple scholarships, Dell scholarships, Toshiba scholarships, Google scholarships, Sony , Gateway, and IBM as well as other computer related companies. These types of scholarships in computer science are usually very lucrative – and very competitive as well – but never let this stop you from applying to them.

Don’t forget companies such as Yahoo and computer related organizations and clubs as well. Many of these companies and organizations will additionally have computer science fellowship and internship opportunities available. Some of these opportunities include rather large stipends, and the opportunity to get your foot in the door in your chosen field before you ever finish school.

Finally, you should check with the Computer Science Department at the school you will attend, as they will also have many computer science scholarship grant opportunities that are only available to students who attend that school, and study in that department. Some of these awards will be small, but in some cases, the awards can be quite large.

One of the largest awards available in the computer science field is from Intel. The Intel scholarship offers a $100,000 prize to fund projects, and it is very competitive. This is called the Intel Science Talent Search, and you can learn more about it at http://www.societyforscience.org/sts/.

  • Microsoft Scholarships in Computer Science

    Computer Science Scholarships by Microsoft
    Microsoft Scholarships

If you plan to enter a computer science related field of study when you attend college, you should definitely consider Microsoft scholarships to help pay for your education. Each year, Microsoft awards approximately half a million dollars in Microsoft college scholarships, and those MSN scholarships tend to be quite lucrative.

Those who win a Microsoft scholarship program will have an entire year of their college tuition completely paid for by Microsoft. Additionally, those who win one of these awards will also be required to attend a twelve week summer internship, which does pay a salary. This internship takes place at the Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. There are rare instances where an internship may not be offered to a MSN scholarship winner, however.

The deadline for applying for the Microsoft scholarship program occurs each year in mid January. Winners are chosen based on their eligibility, the quality of their application, and their true interest in the software industry specifically. Additional considerations include your commitment to leadership and of course your financial need. Although the awards are merit and need based, preference will be given to those who are considered to be minorities within the computer science field, in an effort to create more diversity within the field. There are four categories of scholarships offered by Microsoft, and they include General Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, Women’s Scholarships, and Students with Disabilities Scholarships. One application will work for all Microsoft college scholarships that you are eligible for.

While there are MSN scholarships available for those who are in graduate programs, most of the awards made by Microsoft each year will go to undergraduate students and those who are just entering college for the first time. These awards are not just made to students in the United States. Instead, they include students in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These Microsoft scholarships are merit based, and you must have at least a 3.0 GPA, and maintain that GPA. If you have a possible GPA of 5.0, however, you must maintain a GPA of at least 4.0.

Should you win a Microsoft Scholarship, the award amount will be paid directly to your school, and it cannot be transferred to a different school other than the one listed on your application. The funds can only be used to pay tuition, and this does not include room, board, books, or other fees associated with your education.

Many people work hard to get a computer science scholarship from Microsoft not only for the financial help, but also for the opportunity to work in the internship program in Redmond, Washington. This internship is highly coveted, and will offer the student real world experience. Often, those who win the awards and participate in the internship are offered an employment opportunity with Microsoft upon completion of their studies, but even if you are not offered employment through Microsoft, this looks great on your resume and makes it easier to get a different job within the industry.

For more information about Microsoft college scholarships and to apply for one of these awards you can visit the Microsoft Scholarships. You will need to go through a registration process at the site.

  • Dell Scholarship – The Dell Scholars Program

The Dell Scholars Program - Dell Scholarship
    Dell Scholars Program

The Dell Scholars Program is sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. This Dell scholarship is not based on merit but rather on need. The Dell Scholars program was not created to examine grades as much as the people who earn them. Students who faced challenges in life trying to achieve their educational goals and endured builds character. They become role models in their community and can make a huge difference in the lives of people around them. At least that is how the Dell Scholars Program looks at things. It is for this reason that the foundation has issued over 300 Dell scholarships in the last 6 years at the tune of around $31 million dollars.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation truly believes that excellence does begin in High School; but it is not simply based on academic scores; but rather on the goals and attitude of those students who are striving to make a difference. The Dell Foundation does support a college readiness program to help prepare High School seniors for the next educational level. The foundation is sincere in their belief that education opens doors and allows each adult to reach their full capability.

The Dell Scholars Program goes above and beyond financial aide. This program offers mentoring and leadership services that prepare, guide and assist a scholar through 6 years of educational bliss. The Dell scholarship award of $20,000 is only a small part of what the Dell Foundation offers its scholars. To qualify a student must have participated in a two year college readiness program sponsored by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. They have to be in their graduation year and have a grade point average of at least 2.4.

In addition; the prospective student has to be in need of financial support. They have to show need and be in the process of entering a 4 year degree program. Furthermore; they have to be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal alien. The foundation looks at the application very closely. They look to see what the student’s ambition in life is. They want to know if the student has goals and if they do; what their plan to make them a reality is. They are looking to see how well the student can explain the challenges they have faced or are presently confronting. They want to see applicants with motivation and determination and of course to see if you can show you truly need the financial assistance.

The Dell scholarship is geared towards students who know what they want; and know how they are going to get there. It is designed for those students who strive on hard work and the rewards that result from it. That is what the foundation looks for in prospective students and that is pretty good criteria to live by. The application process for the Dell Scholarship Program opens in November and closes the following January 15th.

    Google Anita Borg Scholarship

If you are a female, Google might help you pay for your college education. While Google has many different Google Scholarships available, the Google scholarship that benefits female students the most is the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. The Anita Borg Scholarship for female students exists for the purpose of helping women who want to pursue an education and a career in the field of computer science or technology.

The Google Anita Borg Scholarship is available to students in the United States, as well as Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. Female students in these different countries are not competing for the Google scholarships with students from other countries. Instead, there is a separate Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship for each of these individual countries, and each has its own set of eligibility rules.

For example, the United States Anita Borg Scholarship requires students to be female, to be entering the senior year of an undergraduate program of study or to be a graduate student, to be enrolled in a computer science program, a computer engineering program, or to a technology related program of study, to be a full-time student, and to have and maintain a 3.5 GPA. Additionally, you must be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident of the United States, or an international student attending school in the United States in order to be eligible. You can apply if you have already applied in the past, even if you were a finalist.

This Borg scholarship award is worth $10,000, and it includes an all-expenses-paid invitation to the retreat that is held each year at the GooglePlex in Mountain View, California. The winners are chosen based on their academic background and leadership abilities.

The eligibility requirements are the same for every country that is represented by the Google Anita Borg Scholarship, with the exception that you must be attending a school in that specific country, and you must be a resident or citizen of that country.

It is important to realize that this particular Google scholarship for female students is not available for first year students, or any student who does not have at least senior status in an undergraduate program. However, there is an Anita Borg Google First Years Scholarship available that could help you.

The First Years scholarship program is designed for students who are currently high school seniors, about to enter their first year of college. Winners are selected based on their academic background, their community service, their leadership abilities, and their level of interest in computer science. The award amount is $10,000, and these students will also be invited to the GooglePlex retreat. The application process for this Google Anita Borg scholarship is a bit longer, requiring multiple essays and letters of reference – which shouldn’t be any surprise, or any bother considering the size of the award. Although no set number of winners has been announced, Google makes multiple awards of all of the Anita Borg Memorial Scholarships, with each winner being awarded $10,000. Because of the high amount, this Google scholarship is not renewable, and if you win the Borg scholarship for female students, you cannot reapply.

If you apply for and win one of the many lucrative Google Scholarships, there is more at stake than just the attractive Google scholarship award amounts that will be issued to help pay for your higher education, you will also be invited to the annual GooglePlex Retreat during your award year. The latest GooglePlex Retreat for 2010 is called Google Fuse and will be held July 15–17 in New York, NY.

Google Fuse exists for the purpose of bringing college aged computer scientists together for very effective and important networking opportunities. The retreat takes place each year at the famous GooglePlex in Mountain View, California. Typically, students apply to attend this important event, and only a handful of applicants are accepted. However, as a Google scholarship winner, you will be automatically invited to the GooglePlex retreat and all of your expenses will be paid, as a part of your Google college scholarship award.

Google Scholarships that are available include numerous Google Anita Borg Scholarship for the United States, the Middle East, Canada, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, the Google AISES Scholarship – in partnership with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities, the Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship, the Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities, the Google United Negro College Fund Scholarship, and the Google Zawadi Africa Scholarship. While the amounts of these scholarships may vary from program to program, the majority of the scholarships from Google are worth up to $10,000 each – which will go a long way towards getting a higher education paid for.

There are also Google Scholarships for Conference Travel Expense, although these scholarships do not make you automatically eligible for the Google Retreat. These travel scholarships pay the travel and boarding expenses for specific conferences, which include the Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference, the Google Travel Scholarship for the AISES National Conference and the Google Women of Color Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference.

The GooglePlex Retreat, or Google Fuse (the latest retreat), allows students to form networks that will allow them to share research information, academic information, and industry information and opportunities for many years. This retreat also allows those who are employed by Google to connect with the future generation of computer scientists, to impart important industry information to them, and to see what the future generation has to offer as well. Students are also able to further explore career opportunities in the field of computer science.

While the GooglePlex retreat is usually held in Mountain View, California, it can also be held in New York City, New York. The retreat can last as little as two days and approximately fifty students will win an invitation to the retreat – other than the Google college scholarship winners, who are automatically invited. The length of time, the number of attendees, and the location of the event can vary from year to year. For more information on the GooglePlex Retreat go to 2010 Google Fuse. Remember that even if you did not win any of the Google Scholarships, you can still apply to attend the Google Plex Retreat, although you may be responsible for paying the expenses of attending yourself.

  • Unique Kohls Scholarship Program Cares for Kids

Most college scholarships are primarily for high school or college students. Kohls Corporation really cares for kids, because they have opted to take an unique Kohls scholarship approach to recognize young people who are active in their communities. Through the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program, 2,100 youths aged six to eighteen have a unique opportunity to receive recognition for their community involvement and contributions.

This Kohl’s store scholarship was organized by a corporation that understands that children of all ages are essential members of their communities and have a unique part to play in the lives of those around them. The corporation has taken steps to ensure that every child has a unique opportunity to win college scholarship money. For this reason, students from each of two age groups are chosen for these awards. One group consists of children aged six to twelve. The second group consists of children aged 12 to 18. One student from each group is chosen at each Kohl’s store located throughout the United States to be a recipient of this unique reward.
This Kohls scholarship program, funded by Kohl’s Corporation, has been in operation for eight years, and has awarded over $200,000 annually to students who make a vital contribution to their communities. The Kohl scholarship program accepts applications during the autumn of each year. Adults may nominate students online at Kohl’s corporate website until March 15th each year.
Of all the students who complete a Kohls scholarship application and are nominated, two students from each store throughout the nation are selected to receive a $50 gift card to the store. Of these winners, 170 young people will receive regional undergraduate scholarships. Ten of these regional winners will become national Kohls college scholarship winners.
In addition to winning a free scholarship for college, national winners will have the opportunity to select a charity of their choice. Kohl’s Corporation will then donate $1,000 to each of these charities. Students who are national scholarship award winners will be notified of their achievement in July of each year.
In previous years, the company has recognized students who became involved in their communities in a wide variety of ways. Some students were responsible for organizing efforts to assist in hurricane relief. Others have demonstrated community concern by riding their bicycles for charity efforts. A few students even took the initiative and planted and cared for an urban garden.
These Kohl scholarships grants are unusual because, unlike most academic scholarships, the student’s grade point average does not play a primary factor in the selection of the scholarship recipient. Instead, the student’s ability to focus on the needs of others and make the world a better place is of greater importance.

If you know a student whose idea contributed significantly to a neighborhood or community project, or who has a strong interest in making the world a better place for others, nominating him or her for this university Kohls scholarship grant may be the perfect opportunity to express your approval and respect. Don’t let this unusual scholarship opportunity to recognize someone for caring go to waste because – spread the word today that Kohls cares for kids!
