  • Unclaimed Scholarships for College – Do they really Exist?

    Unclaimed College Scholarships
    Unclaimed Scholarships

Are you looking for a way to pay for your college education? Have you heard that millions of dollars in unknown unclaimed scholarships are available to you? There isn’t really unclaimed college scholarships sitting around for anyone to claim – but there are unclaimed scholarship opportunities you really need to be aware of because there are lots of them. Some scholarship sponsors will actually not award a scholarship on a particular year simply because there wasn’t enough applicants who applied and they didn’t even come close to matching up to their scholarship criteria. This tells you that you should apply to all unknown scholarships you can apply to even if your close to the qualifying criteria for a particular scholarship.

The first thing that you need to know is that while each scholarship has its requirements that must be met for eligibility, the majority of scholarships that are available do not require you to be a genius or a saint. If you have average grades, and you’ve lived an average life – meaning that you do not have numerous accomplishments or you haven’t done much civic work – you are still eligible for hundreds of different scholarships.

With that said, the fact concerning unclaimed scholarships is that most scholarship awards actually are claimed. Few go unclaimed, however there are many unclaimed college scholarships that are actually not awarded each year simply because there were no suitable applicants – or there were no applicants at all. These sometimes are referred to as unclaimed scholarships. A student who would have been close to the criteria might have picked up an easy scholarship if they’d applied!

Often, this type of unclaimed scholarship is unclaimed because the amount of the award was very small – and future college students simply went after the larger awards. This is why it is so important not to overlook any obscure scholarships that you may be eligible for, regardless of the award amount.

Make sure that you check out information concerning weird scholarships, as you very well may be eligible for several of those awards, and fewer people apply for those awards because you must have a unique and rare talent to apply and win. Check out local scholarship opportunities, state opportunities, national opportunities, and of course industry specific opportunities. Don’t overlook civic organizations that have scholarship opportunities, including clubs that you belong to, that your parents belong to, or that your grandparents belong to.

In reality, almost all college scholarships have many more applicants than available funds that will be doled out. The few college scholarships that do go unclaimed can’t be claimed because of restrictive selection criteria. For example, the Zolp scholarship is available only for students at Loyola University of Chicago born with the last name of Zolp. The name must appear on their birth certificate, and no, you cannot change your name to qualify for the award.

If you are looking for unclaimed scholarships that exist because a student won the award, and then didn’t attend school, or dropped out of school, you may save time by realizing that in most cases, the award will immediately be given to someone else who already applied for the scholarship and did not win it – but came close – or the funds will revert back to the scholarship fund, and will not be awarded again until the following application period.

There is one form of financial aid that does go unclaimed every year, and that’s the Federal Pell Grant. This is a government grant  for need based students given out when students fill out their FAFSA. According to Edvisors, about (3) million students in 2013-14 who did not file the FAFSA, would have qualified for a Federal Pell Grant. That’s just a few years ago! With college often taking more than four years, many of those students who didn’t file are likely still in school. Of them, 1.3 million would have qualified for the maximum Federal Pell Grant allowed. Those qualified students could have received a maximum amount of $5,645 in Pell Grant awards in the 2013-2014 application cycle. You can ask now, how much money will be left on the table in 2018?

Be very skeptical of websites and other advertisements that offer to get you information on millions of dollars of unclaimed scholarships for a fee. The information that they deliver to you will not be worth the paper that it is printed on, and mostly you will just receive information that you can get anywhere for free, in terms of how to tap various sources for scholarship funds. Purchasing such information is a waste of your time and money.

Understand that you must work to get scholarships for college, and this includes unclaimed scholarships. No matter what scholarships you might receive, filling out the FAFSA annually should be at the top of your priority list. Nobody is just going to hand you money for college because it was lying around unused. The best way to get the funds that you need, is to apply for every scholarship that you are eligible for (time permitting), and realize going into it that this takes a great deal of time and effort on your part. This is the real meaning of finding unclaimed scholarships!

  • Disability Grants and Scholarships Make College Easy

Life becomes so much more complex when you suffer from a disability, but paying for college is easy with disability grants and scholarships. While most people don’t realize that there are thousands of dollars available in the form of scholarships for the disabled, these programs do exist and they help thousands of disabled people pay for college each year. It may be difficult to find these programs at times, but a little research will net you with numerous different leads for disability scholarships and grants.

Generally, college students with disabilities must borrow money from various sources in order to cover all of the costs associated with attending college. This might include disability grants from both the federal government as well as private sources. While the federal government does provide money solely for those with some sort of physical or mental disability, which is estimated to be about forty million Americans, private organizations are where most of the scholarships for people with disabilities  come from.

    How do these Programs Work?

Disability grants do not work the same way that many traditional programs work. The main difference between able-bodied and disability programs is the added challenge of simply attending classes that a disabled person may face. To this end, a person with disabilities can apply and qualify for traditional, tuition covering monies, as well as money that has been earmarked to the schools in order to make them more accessible to the disabled students who attend.

Many people may wonder why this is important, and many other may feel that it is the job of the school to make these accessibility upgrades. The sheer reality of these situations is that there are so many different disabilities and the overall student populations containing these minorities are low. In order to solicit and gain these people as students, schools need to be able to make these improvements on the fly as these students present themselves. Making this money available as a scholarship for disabled students also allows the student to be in on the design and decision-making, creating a niche relationship where the student is able to thrive at that particular institution.

What Kind of Programs are Out There?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different scholarships for people with disabilitiesavailable to those who suffer from some form of mental or physical disability today. Usually they are grouped according to what the disability is. For example, the National Federation for the Blind, and the Jewish Guild for the Blind both offer programs for students who suffer from some form of blindness. The same is true for many other disabilities such as deafness, paralysis, or learning disabilities.

Many institutions have grant monies set aside strictly for disabled students as well. One such program is the P Buckley Moss Society disability scholarships. The P Buckley Moss Society has three disability scholarships grants worth up to $1,500 which  are easy to get, if you fall into their disability scholarship grant criteria. Most schools have a special resource center that operates solely to serve disabled students. These resource centers within the schools are usually in charge of the money that the school has set aside for people with disabilities. They also have specialists who can help students find the money that is available to them. The best way to get started on this path is to contact the schools that you are interested in and ask to speak with the disability resource center.

The other disability grant scholarship programs that are available to those who have some sort of disability are found within specialized schools who only take students that are disabled. An example of one of these schools can be seen in the Gallaudet University, which is a college strictly for those with hearing impairments.

    You can do it Too!

It will not be a simple task to find college scholarships for students with disabilities for your college education, especially if you suffer from some form of disability. This does not mean that it is something that you will not be able to do. The first step is to contact the schools that you are interested in as they will be able to point you in the right direction. These disability resource centers often have lists of disability grants and scholarships that you may qualify for. No matter what disability you have, the fact is that paying for college is easy, with free money for your schooling, in the form of disability grants and scholarships.

    High Level Scholarships Grants Information

When it comes to scholarships grants the saying applies to students – the early bird gets the worm.

Yes, those students who start to apply earlier may run across more student financial awards then those who wait.

    It’s really a time thing.

Counselors & the experts agree that the earlier you start sniffing around for grants & scholarships the better chance you have to stumble across money for college. Many students wait until their senior year to start looking.

    WRONG!!!

Start earlier; like in your Junior year!

This can result in HUGE scholarships & grants payout to you.

In the beginning of searching for scholarships and grants, students start to get a feel of what they should be doing and over some time start to get it. They will learn to weed out; or ignore some grant scholarship offerings simply because they will know from past application experiences that they will not fit in the guidelines to have a chance at winning the awards. They then will move on and save valuable time to apply to those opportunities they are best suited for.

    Valuable Time Saved!

Let me give you some examples of things to watch out for when applying.

Watch Out for the Pitfalls of Scholarships Grants

There are tons of scholarship awards that are state specific. In other words students can only apply to them IF they live in that state!

You may also have guidelines/restrictions for applying to be: Students must be residing in a particular County, City or high school before a student can be able to apply.

Many scholarships grants are only for those students who have ONE semester under their belt in college before they can apply! This means you must have attended college already before applying. If you’re a senior in high school you will not be able to apply; but many high school seniors fall prey to this restriction!

    It works in reverse too!

Many Grants, scholarships REQUIRE students to be a SENIOR in high school to apply. This is a big one. Many scholarships & grants have that requirement, so beware!

You also have to watch out for applying to scholarships that require to be majoring in a SPECIFIC field of study ie…engineering, math, biology etc. in order for students to apply! So if students apply to the award they must be majoring in it.

This is widespread on scholarship offerings!

If you are majoring in the award they are offering by all means apply to them!

Another sneaky one is that students who apply must show financial need for many educational student aid awards. I say sneaky because many of these indicate that “preference will be shown to those applicants who can demonstrate financial need”. My suggestion is IF you know that you have financial need – then apply. But if you don’t move on to some thing else. The key word here is PREFERENCE. What this means is IF they cannot find an applicant who has financial need, then yours will be considered. By any means just move on to some other awards to apply to because there isn’t a shortage of student aid awards and you most likely will be wasting your time applying for it.

Also; watch out for when many of the above restrictions are bundled together which will make applying for them even more restrictive. For example you may have an award state that students who apply must reside in a particular state, show financial need, be majoring in a particular field of study, live in a certain city within that state and have already attended college one semester (or be a senior in high school).

    WOW!

This is really restrictive and it rules out a heck of lot of students who CAN apply to them, but, this is what students will see over and over, and they will spend many hours reading over these types of restrictive student scholarships or grants.

This is why it’s best to apply to the easier scholarships & grants firstly.

What do I mean by easier scholarships?

Easier scholarships are just plain easier to get all the way around. They are easy to apply to first off. Most you go apply online to do it and submit your application. Secondly they are easier because you can apply to them quickly and there are no drawn out things to accumulate – just standard stuff you can send in later ie. small essay; just ONE letter of recommendation and not three. Just a few things and you’re done applying.

Also the biggest reason why an easy scholarship is easy?

Its easier to win because it may usually have many awards given out to many students each and every year.

These are the awards to apply to FIRSTLY!

Any statistical major will tell you that your odds increase dramatically by having multiple awards then only one.

I would not apply to any scholarship; unless I match up to their guidelines unbelievably well IF there was only one award to be given.

Let me give you an example.

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships gives out over 300 scholarships every year in just the state of Pennsylvania. They also dole out tons more in all the other states throughout the US because this is a federally funded educational award which each state handles in their own way based on their restrictions of how many they are allotted yearly – which is a lot!

It is plain to see that students who apply in just the state of Pennsylvania have greater chance of receiving an award because so many are given out; as opposed to other awards who only select ONE winner.

Another example of high yearly total number of scholarships grants passed out is from Intel. They give out over 300 every year. The statistics say students have a better chance to win one then just one award offered and you may have the same number of students apply to both!

Still another place who is generous with their awards is the Elks National Foundation who hands out an impressive 500 of 4-year easy scholarships & grants. This is nothing short of staggering and one clearly sees how applying to them would be exciting because of the high chance odds of winning!

    Scholarships Grants Master Advice Conclusion

Students should start their scholarship search early and apply to those with high yearly awards and only apply to the others if your qualifications highly match up to their guidelines; otherwise you may be wasting your valuable time that can be spent on productive student financial aid searching and applying. Student time is valuable and must be spent doing things right the first time around rather than constantly spinning your wheels on dead ends such as awards you have very little chance of getting.

Work smart not hard and avoid the dead ends that only lead to lottery style promising awards which 99.9% of students will never win!

  • NWLB (No Worker Left Behind) in Michigan are Easy Scholarships

    NWLB Michigan
    NWLB Michigan

Here’s a different twist on finding fast and easy scholarships to pay for your college tuition. If you default into this *NWLB – No Michigan Worker Left Behind criteria then it will pay for your college for two years. You won’t have to do anything but apply for the *NWLB Michigan program and your tuition is covered. Now that’s a simple scholarship to get. Here’s how it works.

If you live in Michigan, and you are unemployed or about to be laid off, you may be eligible to obtain an education courtesy of the *NWLB (No Worker Left Behind) Michigan Program. The purpose of this program is not only to educate Michigan residents, but to educate those residents in a way that prepares them for emerging knowledge-based job opportunities in the state of Michigan.

While the initial goal of the NWLB (No Worker Left Behind) Michigan Program was to help 100,000 workers to obtain the skills that they needed to get back to work, or to start work in a more advanced industry, the program has been successful – to the point where more than 80,000 residents have participated, that the program will far exceed that goal.

If you are eligible for the program, you will receive $5000 each year for your education, for two years. The total amount cannot exceed $10,000, and you must finish your educational program within four years. Only certain programs are approved for the easy scholarship tuition program, and some examples of these programs include biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, health care, and renewable energy.

In order to be eligible for the program, you must be unemployed, have received notice that you will be terminated or laid off. If you are working, you must not have a total annual family income of more than $40,000. In either instance, you must be eighteen years of age or older, and if you are between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three, you cannot have been a high school graduate within the past two years. You cannot currently be a full-time college student.

There are, of course, additional requirements for the NWLB (No (Michigan) Worker Left Behind) program. You must attend a school in Michigan, and this school must be an approved training program, or a Michigan University or community college. You must also take a skill assessment through a Michigan Works Agency. Obviously, you must be a resident of Michigan. All simple criteria for fast & easy scholarships for Michigan students.

In order to apply for this tuition program, you must visit your local Michigan Works Agency (MWA). Each agency will differ in terms of how the application process is carried out, and the amount of time that it takes to get a decision. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the program, there is a backlog, so make sure that you apply as soon as possible to take advantage of this short-term opportunity.

If you are concerned about the degree programs that will be approved for the tuition program, you can be certain that there are a wide range of programs that qualify. For example, all of the degree and certificate programs offered at Walsh College in Michigan qualify for the program.

Before you visit the Michigan Works Agency to apply for the program, you should visit the college that you will be attending, in Michigan, to talk to a student counselor and determine which degree or certificate program will work best for you so you can land one of these easy scholarships. However, again, you will have to take a skill assessment test through the MWA as well.

It is important to understand that when the NWLB Michigan (No Worker Left Behind) Program was established that it was set for a three-year period, beginning in August of 2007. This means that unless the program is renewed, August of 2010 will be your last opportunity to take advantage of this free tuition opportunity. Chances are it will continue with the current (2009) state of the Michigan economy. If you fit the above criteria and college is in your future plans then this is one of the easiest scholarships you will find today.

*The NWLB program has been discontinued effective 1/1/12.

  • Easy Tips on Scholarships for Private High Schools

    scholarships for private high schools
    Private High School Scholarships
There are many parents who want the best for their kids but don’t always have the financial assets to offer them such a remarkable opportunity. Parents wanting to send their children to a private high school especially, are left with no more than one logical decision, which is trying to get scholarships for private high schools for their children. Public schools are now considered to offer less learning possibilities in some areas, and many of the good teachers have turned to private institutions.

If you are unsure of the procedure you will have to follow or if you don’t even know where to start, maybe the following easy scholarship tips can help you find a few useful guidelines to help you decide on a school and on a financial aid provider.

    1. The first thing is to look around your home-town for teaching institutions that offer lots of available places for the next school period. The best choices are those that have lots of sponsors which can help your children with scholarships for a private high school, without having to worry yourself. There are some schools that have their own means of financing, and they usually use the scholarship students number as an advertising means. For example, there are private schools that offer scholarships for extraordinary students. If a school is lacking at some point African-American students, then they will be more inclined to admit them, and will even advertise scholarships they have for that type of students. Each school is trying to get what it doesn’t have. This can mean girls, or kids with artistic talents or math skills. Since schools have private financing sources (which can be companies owned by parents of some students or other companies that invest into education in the exchange of a few logos placed on sport equipment and because they will benefit from serious tax deductions), they will be able to admit non-paying students and include them in their scholarship programs. The number and aptitudes of selected students will be mentioned in specialty publications, getting the school the right type of advertising they are after.

    2. Once locating one or more schools, you should go personally to the facility and get in touch with a secretary that can direct you to the office you are looking for, the one dealing with scholarships for students. Here, you can pick up the application for a scholarship for private high school.

    3. You will need to gather all needed files you are requested by each school in particular: birth certificates for the children, the files you are handed to complete and any additional files that can prove family income and children’s previous school results.

    4. You need to start the search early in the year, preferably in January, because you will need to bring proof of taxes paid for the last year. The tax return documents are the ones used by the Government and Ministry of Education to evaluate your situation and grant parental financial aid for scholarships.

    5. Once you get these documents, make copies of your financial statements and attach them to school files. Make a different file for each private school you are considering for scholarship and make sure they are sent out in time, usually by late May, so that they will be processed as soon as possible.

    6. Even if the scholarships for private high schools are usually based on the particular financial needs of each family, it doesn’t hurt proving your child’s school performances. Allow teachers from the new schools to talk to the child, make him take part in some tests of that school and make sure he scores high. Also, talk to the teachers in his previous school, and select those that like your child the most. Then ask then to address recommendation letters to each of the private schools you have in mind.

    7. Evaluate your situation. There are schools that offer special scholarships for children who live in the same town, while others offer them to children that are not resident in that particular town. There are high schools offering scholarships for children gifted in math, others for those inclined towards literature. Discovering your child’s special talents will aid you a lot in being granted a scholarship in the most prestigious high schools.

This entire search regarding scholarships for private high schools should be only conducted if you truly feel that your child is missing important aspects of learning in his current school. As we all know, offering him the opportunity of learning in a quality academic environment since early ages will have a beneficial effect on his future adult performances.

    Newly Discovered
The Alliance for Choice in Education which is based in Denver, Colorado offers the ACE scholarships that is specifically for students in grades between Kindergarten and the 12th grade. It exists for the purposes of helping families to pay for tuition at private schools, but is only available to those families that qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program. The program only pays up to $2000 annually for the lower grades and up to $3000 annually for students in grades nine through twelve.

Of all the various scholarships today, the Cincinnatus Scholarship and Competition held each year at the University of Cincinnati, has to be one of the most extraordinary and atypical college scholarships today. They may even be easy scholarships to capture, because you may qualify already. This is not your quintessential scholarship, but an activating and powerful competition in which invited students attend to display their leadership, academic and community involvement characteristics in an attempt to upgrade their Cincinnatus scholarships to a higher monetary level once you qualify for the entry-level scholarship. All three play a pivotal role in the Cincinnatus scholarship competition; especially community service. This is why the scholarship is called the Cincinnatus Scholarship.

Mainly a farmer first, Cincinnatus was a Roman statesman who gained fame for his selfless devotion to the republic in a time of crisis and for giving up the reins of power when the crisis was over. He made his stint as dictator as brief as possible, and went back to being a farmer once the Roman crisis was over. He was admirable for his lack of ambition of power, as well as his ability to serve his country when called upon to do so.

  • Weird Unknown Left Handed Scholarships Grants

There is weird unknown left handed scholarships being offerred by Juniata College located in Pennsylvania and it’s being sponsored by the Mary Francis Beckley Scholarship Foundation. There are thousands of unique and unusual minority scholarships available to qualified students each year. Many are offered based on a student’s ethnic background or other personal attributes. One characteristic that many people may not even realize puts them in a minority, though, is their status as a left-handed person.

You probably weren’t aware that left handed people are a minority. In fact, only ten percent of the entire population is left handed! One college in Pennsylvania, however, both recognizes and celebrates this individual diversity. Each year, Juniata College awards up to $1,500 in academic scholarships each year to students who experience some type of handicap as a result of being left-handed.

These scholarships for left handers are funded by the Mary Francis Beckley Scholarship Foundation. This weird scholarship just for being left handed was founded in 1979. Since that time, at least 40 students have been awarded scholarships from this fund. Left handed scholarship students are identified by a question on the data form that each college freshman completes.  Woman don’t have to worry either because Juniata has scholarships for left handed females too!

Those students who have excellent academic records are chosen as left handed college scholarship recipients. Any left-handed sophomore, junior, or senior student attending Juniata College is considered for this left handed award. Only students attending this college, however, are eligible for this weird unknown scholarship opportunity.

This college offers a wide variety of programs, including Programs of Emphasis, or Majors, in accounting, biology, communication, education, politics, and language. Each student attending this college has a unique opportunity to win one of several merit unknown scholarships. The amount of these awards, in many cases, ranges from $8,000 to full tuition scholarships.

Although many scholarships for left handed people websites frequently mention left handed scholarships, the award offered at Juniata College is the only one designed specifically for left handed students. This is somewhat weird, considering that one in ten persons are left-handed, but apparently, many left handed philanthropists choose to donate unknown scholarship monies to other funds or organizations rather than funding college tuition for other persons who are left handed.

Unless you are considering attending Juniata College, though, start looking for other ways to fund your college education. You aren’t going to win a left handed college scholarship just for being left handed unless you just happen to decide to go to college in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. And, although Juniata College offers a sound education with an excellent graduation rate, the small size of the college is a big indicator that not all left handed persons are going to be able to attend college here.

If you are planning to go to school here, though, and you do happen to be left-handed, it might not hurt to at least ask about their left handed scholarships when you are filling out the data form. Unless you’re willing to look out for unusual and weird scholarship opportunities to finance your education, you may not see them even when they come your way.

Keep your eyes open so you don’t miss out on a great opportunity to win your share of weird unknown scholarship college education money each year. Good luck, and keep looking for little known creative ways to finance your college education!
