There are quite a few different Howard University Scholarships Grants offered. Howard University, located in Washington, DC; is a School of Education which prepares African-American students through a higher education platform to excel in leadership roles in today’s world.

The good news is that there is a very good chance that many students can qualify for one or more of the Howard University Scholarships and Grants being offered. These are simple scholarships to apply for because students can complete just one application for Howard University Scholarships and Grants and then the school will match you with those that you qualify for. It is a great opportunity for you to get the money you need to pay for your college education.

All applications must be received by March 19th to be considered for the following academic year. The application form does have boxes that allow you to check mark beside the scholarships you would like to be considered for. It is a good idea to go through the criteria for them so that you can see what you may be eligible for and have a fair chances of getting.

Grace Hawkins –Briggs & Leah Person Hawkins Endowed Scholarship Fund

Applicants for this HU scholarship must have 3.0 GPA or higher. They must be pursuing a degree in either education or social work. Preference will be given to those applicants from both the Washington DC and Greenville SC areas. There can be numerous winners annually with the maximum amount of $2,500 per recipient.

Hattie M. Strong Endowed Scholarship from Howard University

There can be several winners of this merit based Howard University Scholarship each year. The maximum amount of it is $5,000. An interview is required and the applicant must submit an essay with the questions being given each year for the topic. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Lilian Ruth Dabney Endowed Scholarship

This is a need based scholarship from HU that can be up to $5,000 per academic year and there can be several awards annually. It is awarded to one student that can show the most need in the field of education.

Faustine C. Jones-Wilson Endowed Scholarship

This is a scholarship for books, and can be up to $500 per academic year per student. It is a need based scholarship. Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. They also have to be enrolled in an education degree program.

Challenge Fund Scholarship form HU

Students must show significant financial need that could determine if they are able to attend college or not at Howard University. Students also have to provide an essay about the challenges that they have faced and what they have done in an effort to overcome them. The students must show that they are favorable for completing their degree if the funding is offered. The number of recipients and the amounts awarded vary annually based on funding and on the number of applicants.

Howard University Trustee Scholarship Grant

Applicants have to be enrolled in actual classroom coursework. This doesn’t include any internship or practical credits. They can’t be working full-time either on campus or outside of the school. They must be enrolled full-time with a 3.5 GPA if they are a graduate student or a 3.2 GPA if they are an undergraduate student.

For this particular scholarship from Howard University, the applicants must be recommended by a departmental chairperson. They must be ranked in the top 10% of their class and show outstanding academic achievements. The amount of the black scholarship and the number of them offered depends on funding, financial need of the applicants, and the number of applicants.

Walter and Theodora Daniel Endowed Educational Research Fund

Applicants for this scholarship grant from HU must be involved with research that defines African-American education. The support of an advisor for the research project must be documented. Letters of support along with an itemized breakdown of the cost of the research, and the overall proposal must be completed. The amount approved will depend on the needs of the given research project.

Any of these Howard University Scholarships and Grants can make it more affordable to be able to attend the school and to get the education of your dreams! For African-American students it definitely is worth the time to examine the criteria for the funding and to complete the application process if this university fits into what you’re looking for in a higher educational setting.
