    The goal of ThanksUSA is to offer appreciation to the men and women that are in the armed forces. The ThanksUSA scholarship program is based on financial need for their spouses and children. The funds can be used to attend an accredited technical or vocational school.

    Supplementing with ThanksUSA Scholarships

    Some people assume that if they get funds through the GI Bill or other assistance, that they can’t qualify for a ThanksUSA scholarship. That is the case though, and the funds can actually be used to supplement what is also being offered from other resources. This means that it can significantly reduce the amount of out of pocket money that a person will need to come up with in order to complete their educational goals.

    ThanksUSA Scholarship Program

    All applications for the ThanksUSA scholarship must be received by May 15th annually. Only the first 10,000 applications that are received will be evaluated so it is a good idea to yours completed as soon as you can. Applications won’t be accepted prior to April 1st. Applications can be submitted online and a confirmation will be given or they can be mailed in.

    The military scholarships are need based, and that can influence the amount that someone will receive. The maximum amount of the award is $3,000 or the total of the program – whichever is less. The funds can be used for non-degree programs and licensing programs as long as they are accredited. The funds aren’t eligible for a Master’s Degree program or a second Bachelor’s degree.

    Linda J. Romero Scholarship from ThanksUSA – New Program!

    There has been a separate scholarship added to the ThanksUSA funds, the Linda J. Romero Scholarship. This is going to be offered annually as long as there continues to be enough funding for it. The award amount is $4,000 to a female spouse of an enlisted military husband. Applicants must be enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College
    Eligibility

    Any spouse or child of someone enlisted in the armed forces can apply for the ThanksUSA scholarships. For children, they must be 24 years of age or younger. There is no age limit for a spouse. Children must be dependent which means if they are over the age of 18 and they are married they no longer qualify. Children must be the biological child, adulated child, or step-child of enlisted military personnel.

    All applicants must have a GPA of 2.0 for previous class work including high school and college courses that they have been enrolled in. Other factors that determine award winners including goals, financial need, leadership roles, and community involvement.

    The student may be enrolled either part-time or full-time. There are supplemental documents that need to be provided with the application. They include a military ID and the social security number and base location of the enlisted spouse or parent. The most recent tax return is also required in order to look at financial need.

    The number of ThanksUSA scholarships for military service is given annually and can vary based on the funds available. The program depends on various private donors and fundraisers to get the money to offer through the ThanksUSA scholarship fund. Everyone that applied will be notified by mail in the late summer about the status of their application.

    Those that have been offered a scholarship will be informed of the amount of the award. Checks will be mailed to the recipient and made out to them and to the school that they will be attending. The exception is if the student will be attending Kaplan University who is a sponsor of this scholarship program. If that is the school of choice, then the funds will be dispersed directly to the school on allocated dates.

    There is no automatic renewal of these military scholarship funds. However, past winners are encouraged to apply again the following year for the ThanksUSA scholarships if they are still enrolled in college and still have a financial need to help them complete the program.

    While Google has become known for offering numerous Google scholarships, they have now joined with the Student Veterans of America organization to offer a Google Student Veterans of America (SVA) scholarships.

    Student Veterans of America (SVA) is a non-profit organization that provides veterans with advocacy, support and resources necessary to succeed in higher education and their future careers. This SVA scholarship is available to any student veteran who is pursuing a degree in computer science or a related field in the United States.

    Along with the financial reward associated with the scholarship, recipients of the scholarship will also receive an invitation to attend a scholar’s retreat, which is all-expenses paid, at the Googleplex located in Mountain View, California during the summer of 2012.

    Google has demonstrated a long history of assisting college students in their pursuit of a computer science education through the availability of scholarship and internship opportunities. The search engine giant first began to offer Google scholarships in 2004. Since that time, Google has provided nearly $9 million in scholarship funds and financial support to some 2,100 students from groups around the world that are historically underrepresented.

    The company’s academic scholarship programs are only one part of their worldwide efforts to increase diversity within the technology industry while also investing in what will become the next generation of computer scientists. The mission of Google’s partnership with SVA is to ensure that student veterans within the United States have the necessary support to pursue education and careers in the technology field.

    Google’s commitment to assisting military veterans has also extended beyond scholarship opportunities and educational outreach efforts. These efforts have included establishment of the Google Veterans Network, which is one of several employee groups that is dedicated to the support of diversity at Google.

    The company has also introduced a job search engine customized for the use of veterans, known as the Veterans Job Bank. The job bank was established in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

    The overall goal of the Google SVA scholarship is to provide a continuing commitment to the advancement of technology and computing by helping veteran students to excel in their studies and remain active leaders and role models. It is also hoped that the SVA scholarship will help to dismantle barriers that may prevent women and minorities from entering these fields.

    The Google-SVA Scholarship program rewards high-caliber student veterans who are working to pursue a degree within the Computer Science field. By identifying high-performing student veterans within this field and rewarding achievement, it is hoped that further study will be encourages.

    The program also seeks to improve the retention of student veterans in this field by providing funding for university expenses, including tuition, fees and books. Through the sponsorship of the Annual Scholars’ Retreat, it is hoped that communities of students will be fostered, while providing a positive environment in which student veterans may network with one another as well as with engineers from Google in a fun and relaxing environment.

    Up to eight $10,000 Google SVA scholarships will be provided to student veterans through the Google-SVA scholarship program. To be eligible to receive one of the scholarships, students must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree in Computer Science or a related field such as computer engineering, software engineering, information systems, applied networking, information technology, electrical engineering or system administration.

    The SVA scholarship is only open to sophomores, juniors or seniors. Freshman students are not eligible to apply for the scholarship. Students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study. Students must also have received an honorable discharge or must be currently in good standing with their branch of service in the U.S. military. Applicants will also need to submit a personal statement that details their reasons for applying for the scholarship, the reasons for selecting their major, their professional objectives, their roles as a leader in their SVA chapter or community and any additional community service initiatives they have been involved with. The deadline to apply for the Google SVA scholarship is March 15th.

    Military spouse scholarships are available around the United States through national, regional and local levels. There are many organizations which realize that being dependent on a married partner who is employed by America’s fairly active military can be dangerous financially, especially if the service members is tragically killed in combat. Fortunately there are a number of methods military spouses can entertain to attempt to fill a financial gap in the money they need for high educations costs. These military spouse scholarships are offered to those married to current service members, deceased personnel and in many cases extend to a child of the marriage.

    While this article cannot possibly contain the many different programs available, a great extended source on additional resources can be found through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). DANTES provides an exceptionally comprehensive list of programs available for military spouse scholarships, so all interested persons who do not find military spouse tuition assistance in this article or would like to know what else is available should make the website their next stop.

    It is important to know that many of the individual branches of the military offer scholarships for military spouses as well as loans for family members dependent on a service member’s paycheck. Beyond this, many national and regional organizations offer assistance as well. Once such example is the Air Force Association Military Spouse Scholarship which provides $2,500 to those selected for a reward. In order to be eligible for this program applicants will need to be currently married to a member of the Air Force, Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve who is on active duty, have been accepted into a college, and be entering a degree granting program. All application material for this program must be submitted no later than April 30 of 2011.

    Another great program comes from the Air Force Aid Society military spouse scholarship. This program provides a non-renewable $2,000 grant to winners of an award. In order to be eligible for the program, all applicants will need to be spouses of or dependents on an active duty, retired, or deceased member of an Air Force oriented military branch. On top of this applicants must be high school graduates, accepted into a university and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average. The deadline for this program is March 11.

    The Anchor Scholarship Foundation gives out military spouse tuition assistance to the tune of $500 and has done so since 1981 when the group was founded. In 2010 they awarded over 42 different spouse scholarships. All applicants for this military spouse scholarship will need to have a sponsor who is currently on active duty in the US Navy or be retired with six consecutive years served. Winners of the award must be attending a four year college or be a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into a university. While a 2011 deadline date has not yet been announced, interested students should watch the website for forthcoming information.

    Another group which offers scholarships for military spouses is the Folds of Honor Foundation which gives out two different scholarships for $5,000 based on differing criteria. General eligibility for both programs requires that applicants be a spouse or dependent on an active duty military member, a military member who died, or received the Purple Heart. Both of the military spouse , students will need to show proof of their significant other’s disability obtained through active duty as well as proof of dependency.

    The Immediate Use Scholarship requires all applicants to be under the age of 24 while the Future Use scholarship can be given out based on an intended use at an unspecified time in the future. All application materials must be submitted no later than May 15.

    There are clearly many different military scholarships for spouses that individuals will be able to gain access to. While this article can’t appropriately lay out every single one, interested applicants should check the DANTES financial aid listings which will point them in other possible directions.

    If you want to study a complete college education without incurring any significant debt and if you are prepared to commit four years of your life to the safety and security of your country, then you can opt for an easy NROTC scholarship. NROTC abbreviation stands for Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. The US Navy can offer to pay $180,000 to finance your education till the very end through the NROTC scholarship. You will receive a specifics stipend worth hundreds of dollars every month for four continuous years. Furthermore, the government will pay for your books and tuition fees as well. When it comes to an easy scholarship it doesn’t get any easier then this.

    In exchange, you will have to complete the graduate course successfully and obtain additional qualification that will make you capable of serving in the Navy. You will also have to maintain a strict physical fitness regimen so that you can withstand the tough life of the armed forces.

    You will have to commit four years of service for the U.S. Navy. Once you complete this tenure, you have the option of continuing or moving on to other jobs and professions.

    Benefits of a Navy ROTC Sholarship

    The biggest advantage that a Naval ROTC scholarship offers is that it comes with absolutely no hidden strings attached. This is not a loan. Hence, you need not worry about repayment of debt or other related problems that students often have to worry about. You will be a part of an elite program where the scholarship helps you to enter directly into NROTC.

    As far as choice of course is concerned, you have complete freedom to choose any of the 150 colleges where NROTC scholarships are available. These include the top colleges in the country. Hence, you’ll never have to compromise on the quality of your education just to obtain a NROTC scholarship.

    Apart from the courses that you have chosen, you will have to pick between serving in the navy or the Marine Corps. You may have to undergo additional training and physical fitness programs throughout your college education. You may even have to undertake training courses during the summer break. However, none of these tasks will be onerous for a person who is determined to serve the country as well as getting a college education with the help of the NROTC scholarship.

    If you obtain and qualify for a Navy ROTC scholarship but feel that you are not cut out for a life in the armed forces, you have time till one year into your college education to back out of the program. Even if you do this, you will owe nothing to the Navy.

    The easy scholarship imposes specific SAT criteria that you must obtain in order to become eligible for the fantastic benefits that the program offers. Once you complete your education, a steady income and a prestigious job will be waiting for you.

    Since the NROTC scholarship is so beneficial many students do apply for it and competition is relatively tough but not for those who fit the criteria it then becomes an easy scholarship to get. You must have a clear idea whether you intend to serve in the armed forces for the fixed time period or not.

The ROTC scholarship amount varies but can go up to $18,000 per year. The amount that cadets on ROTC scholarships receive for their monthly stipend depends on their year in school, as shown below:
    • Year 1: $300/month
    • Year 2: $350/month
    • Year 3: $450/month
    • Year 4: $500/month
    Being merit a based scholarship, the application criteria is stringent as it includes high SAT or ACT scores and requirements to meet physical standards. Regular participation in the ROTC activities is essential as well. There are many more such criteria that can be checked at. The Army ROTC scholarship application needs to be done online between March and November every year.

    When cadets complete the ROTC course, upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. Serving US Army after the course completion is mandatory. However the option is really worthy due to the fact that the average salary of Signal Corps officer 15% better than that of a Telecommunication Engineer.

You must also meet certain qualifications to be selected for the program. You must be a United States Citizen and suitable for military duty, and you must meet certain academic qualifications as well.

    Different branches of service offer different armed forces health professions scholarships for this program. Note that all HPSP scholarships are post graduate scholarships – for medical school – and they do not offer health professions scholarships for under graduate programs, although there are other military programs designed to pay for under graduate educations. Health professions scholarships available through the Air Force can cover three or four years of school. The Army health professions scholarships can provide funds for one to four years of college. If you are a winner of one of these scholarships, all financial expenses for your education will be met for the length of your scholarship. This includes tuition and fees, books, and equipment, and also includes a monthly stipend as well.

    Once you have graduated from your health care program, you will be expected to serve in the military. In most cases, when you agree to use the HPSP scholarship, you are agreeing that you will exchange one year of military service for each year that your education was paid for. The service that you are required to give while in school does not count towards this obligation. You do, however, get a promotion in the military when you graduate from college, if you were awarded the Health Professions Scholarship. If you are in the Army or Air Force, you will be promoted to Captain. If you are in the Navy, you will be promoted to Lieutenant. At that time, you will be moved to active status, and you will complete the required residency through the military – which pays a great deal more than residency programs outside of the military.

    ABOUT THE AWARD
    The NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) scholarship awards, presented by the DAR scholarship board, are a medium to assist students pursuing degree programs in distinct academic fields like Political Science, Economics, Nursing and Medical Education. There are multiple DAR scholarship awards for each field of study. The Lillian and Arthur Dunn Scholarship is the only Dar scholarship where the mother must be a member (which she would have to be a daughter of the American Revolution) in order to receive a scholarship for her son or daughter. All others may be applied to even if you are not a member of NSDAR. Most NSDAR scholarship awards use a ‘proof of financial need’ as one factor when qualifying.
    ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
    These awards are sponsored by the NSDAR, a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization founded in 1890 and headquarters in Washington D.C. The organization is committed to promote American History and patriotism & ensuring secured American future through various means of better education. Currently the organization provides financial assistance to the tune of $150K annually through various NSDAR scholarships. These daughters of the American Revolution scholarships are managed by the DAR Scholarship Committee under the control of State Scholarship Chairman, National Chairman and Executive Committee. The committee ensures that the Daughters of the American Revolution scholarship awards to the competent applicants irrespective of any discrimination of race, religion, sex or nationality.
    APPLICATION PROCESS
    • Initially the Applicant must take a sponsorship letter from the local DAR chapter – 3000 DAR chapters (approximately) are located in the US and internationally. The information about the local DAR chapter is provided by the State Scholarship Chairman.
    • To get the State Scholarship Chairman details and the application form, a written request is to be made. One self-addressed stamped business-size envelope should accompany the request and must be mailed to the below address:

    AMVETS College Scholarships for VeteransThe AMVETS Veteran College scholarships have military scholarships for existing Veterans offered through two colleges along with their main national AMVETS program. These colleges offer the AMVETS scholarships to active military, sons/daughters/grandchildren of the Veteran.     Devry scholarships for Veterans offer a solid AMVETS scholarship package doling out (10) Veterans scholarships each semester and total of $1,000 per semester for a whopping $9,000 total for the full cost of the degree program the applicant has selected. If a student is attending classes part time (6-11 credit hours for undergraduate coursework) then they are eligible to receive half the AMVETS scholarship amount ($4,500). These AMVET scholarships are for Veterans as well as their spouses & children. All applicants must meet the following to apply to the Devry AMVETS scholarships for Veterans: US citizen, child or spouse of Veteran, no drug convictions, nostudent loan defaults, cannot qualify for Devry’s Active-Duty Military Tuition Rate, must be accepted to Devry’s programs & must apply to them, demonstration of financial need and cannot presently be receiving tuition reimbursement from another source. You cannot be employees or family members of AMVETS National Headquarters or DeVry University. This keeps the selection process unbiased. In order to receive the Devry AMVETS scholarship, a student must have started classes at least (2) semesters prior to the award, and application deadlines are February, June & September. A very low 2.0 GPA is only required to apply. A comprehensive essay must be written on your choice of the following questions:

    AMVETS & University of Phoenix Veterans College Scholarships
    This AMVETS scholarship for Veterans offered by the University of Phoenix is outstanding to say the least because The UOP awards (50) $4,000 AMVETS scholarships to active military, veterans and their families. The UOP shows great appreciation to those who have served in the US military and these scholarships for Veterans substantiate their beliefs. Those who apply must fall into one of the following categories: presently active member of US military which includes Reserves & National Guard, veteran who was honorably discharged, child under (21) years of age or full time student under 23 years old, spouse of Veteran. All applicants cannot be receiving full tuition coverage from any other provider. Only US citizens are allowed to apply to the AMVETS scholarship. This Veteran scholarship will not allow anyone to apply if they are employees or family members of employees of the AMVETS, University of Phoenix, Western International University, Institute for Professional Development, Apollo Group Inc., or any subsidiary of Apollo Group, Inc. The UOP wants to keep these awards as free of any type of favoritism towards applicants as possible. An essay must be written by all applicants on ‘one’ of the following (3) questions:

    • What a higher education means to me.
    • America needs to support Veterans and the active duty military because…
    • My long term goal is…

    Kaplan University AMVETS offer Tuition Discount for Veterans
    Offers 34% tuition discount for Veterans & 53% for active duty/reserve/guard units. AMVETS members get a 10% tuition discount for their family members. Students can earn a degree using military benefits. Kaplan university has over (100) online degree programs in which to choose from, and one can get a degree from the comfort of your own home. Kaplan claims to have the ‘same institutional accreditation as the country’s leading universities and colleges’ & states they know how to work with the Veterans educational needs. You can call 866.484.8520 to get more information.

    It seems like there should be more colleges & universities offering Veteran college scholarships, and I’m sure there is, but the above colleges work through the AMVETS scholarships for Veterans program exclusively.

This is perfect for Veterans who have used up government assistance & who have no other way to pay for furthering their education. Must be a United States Veteran, US citizen, demonstrate financial need. An essay of 50-100 words must be written on this question: ‘What a higher education means to me’. April 15th is the annual deadline for summiting the Veteran scholarship application.

    2) National Scholarship Program for (6) scholarships for high school seniors $4,000 each. Must be a graduating high school senior entering at the college freshmen level, have a high school (GPA) of 3.0. (Or documented evidence of extenuating circumstances that caused a lower GPA), be the child or grandchild of a United States veteran, a US citizen, demonstrate academic promise & financial need. An essay of 50-100 words must be written on this question: ‘What a higher education means to me’. April 15th is the annual deadline for summiting the Veteran scholarship for high school senior’s application.

    3) JROTC National Scholarship Program for one graduating Junior ROTC (JROTC) cadet and must be used for a full time undergraduate student in a college/university or an accredited technical/trade school leading to a certified degree. Must be an active JROTC cadet currently a high school senior, have a minimum high school (GPA) of 3.0, child or grandchild of a US veteran, US citizen, demonstrate academic promise & financial need. An essay of 50-100 words must be written on this question: ‘What a higher education means to me’. Application deadline is April 15th of every year.

    Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo Family Foundation National Memorial Scholarship

    This AMVETS scholarship was set up in memory of Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo who was a immigrant to the US and dedicated his life as a physician in to the U.S. Army Reserves. Two $3,000 Veterans scholarships are awarded annually to only veterans/guardsmen/reservists, and not Veterans family members. It’s the only AMVETS scholarship that does not include family. The nice thing about this AMVET scholarship is, it can be used for ‘part time’ or ‘full time’ undergraduate courses, accredited degree or certificate programs, including online schools. Eligibility requirements are: US citizen & Veteran, demonstration of financial need, no drug convictions, no defaulted federal student loans, must be enrolled or going to be accepted in an eligible program of study, and must have a GED to apply. A written essay of only 50-100 words is required on the question ‘how this scholarship will help me’. April 15th is the AMVETS scholarship application deadline date.

  • American Legion Samsung Scholarship for Veterans Children

    Samsung is one of the largest electronics company in the world today. To show their appreciation to the US forces who helped them in the Korean war when they were resisting communism, Samsung endowed a five million dollar scholarship fund to the American Legion and The American Legion Samsung Scholarship for Veterans Children was established.

    The Samsung scholarship for Veterans children are high school scholarships, more specifically for Juniors only. The winners of this Samsung American Legion scholarship can only use the Samsung scholarship monies solely for undergraduate study (tuition, books, fees, and room and board). The applicants are selected based on past academic performance; their involvement in school & community functions; along with community service. Financial need and those who are descendants of U.S. veterans of the Korean War will receive additional bonus points in the selection process.

    To be eligible you must be a high school junior who was involved with either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program. You must be a direct descendant of an US wartime Veteran who served during specific time periods. Applications are taken at the time in which the applicant applied for his/her respective Boys/Girls State program.

    The American Legion scholarship for Veterans children award breakdown of past winners have been: ten $20,000 scholarships and 88 $1,000 scholarships. This varies from year to year, but very similar.

    If you fit American Legion scholarship for Veterans children criteria for this award you can apply at: Samsung American Legion Scholarship Application. All the specific detailed instructions are there. It may take some time completing this Samsung scholarship application, but it may be worth it in the end. The specific questions you will be asked to explain about yourself are:

    If writing about all these things come easy, then you may be a good candidate for the American Legion Samsung Scholarship for Veterans Children.

    If you’re under the impression that only VFW scholarships for Veterans children can only apply for a VFW scholarship, then think again, because any child can enter into the VFW scholarship program and have a chance to win. That’s right! You can apply to the VFW scholarships even if you or your parents never served in the armed forces for the US military. It seems a little odd why this may be the case because after all, the VFW does have it’s very own special privilege’s by being a member; which is having served in overseas military assignments.

    If you look below the service then you may clearly see why that the VFW Scholarships for Veterans Children is open to all children and not only children of those who served in foreign wars for the US. The reason the VFW invites any child; non-member as well as members, to participate in these essay contest is in the subject matter in which the contest is written on – patriotism! The annual theme will ALWAYS be related to patriotism. The VFW is a patriotic organization and they try to foster patriotism any way they can. This is a great way to do it too, and in a noble fashion – by offering essay writing contest in hopes of winning VFW scholarships.

    The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, along with its partners, has 2.2 million members in approximately 8,100 Posts worldwide. The VFW mission is to “honor the dead by helping the living” through veterans’ service, community service, national security and a strong national defense. Providing scholarships is wonderful community service and creates goodwill and patriotism towards the US military, especially when their’s an active war going on and lives are being lost.

    The VFW Scholarships

    The Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition
    This is the VFW premier scholarship program. It’s a high school scholarship. Audio/Essay & broadcast contest for grades 9 – 12 in which applicants write and record a broadcast script on a patriotic theme. Three million in VFW scholarships awarded yearly & over 100,000 students normally compete. Nov. 1st is entry deadline.

    The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest
    This is for grades 6 – 8 and is an essay contest in which applicants express their view on democracy. Estimated $115,000 students compete annually. Nov. 1st is entry deadline.

    VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship
    For Boy Scouts only. Must have received a Boy Scout Eagle Award, a Venture Scouting Silver Award or a Sea Scout Quartermaster Award to participate in this VFW scholarship. This scholarship program is more specific in nature and is not nearly as accessible as the Patriot’s Pen & the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.     The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Scholarship Program
    The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US is the Womans equivalent to the VFW, but only has approximately 581,245 members and is just as influential in the community as the VFW. They are involved in other activities in which the VFW does not get directly involved, but their mission is very similar. There is ‘The Ladies Auxiliary VFW Scholarship Program’ which highlights (3) scholarships for grades 9 – 12. These VFW scholarships are application type scholarships and are judged based on a girls passed activities such as ‘Junior Unit Activities’, ‘School Activities’, and ‘Scholastic Grades’. The three VFW ladies scholarships are:

    1. Junior Girls Scholarship
    2. Young American Creative Patriotic Art
    3. Continuing Education Scholarship

    This VFW scholarship program has recently been retired by the VFW (07-01-2009). The program provided (25) $3,000 scholarships each year to VFW members who are currently serving in uniform or have been discharged within the (36) months prior to the December 31 deadline.
