John Carey Accounting Scholarship

The John L Carey accounting scholarship is available for graduate students who are enrolled in programs of study that will bring them into the accounting field. Established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1969, the CPA accounting scholarship was created in honor of John L Carey, who was instrumental in the success and continuity of the organization.

There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the John Carey graduate accounting scholarships. They are only offered to graduate students who already hold degrees in liberal arts, or to students who have degrees in a non-business field. There is a great deal of competition for these accounting scholarships, as only ten are awarded each year.

While you will not be required to enter the field of accounting upon graduation, it is important to note that when the award winners are selected, that selection is based on the probability that you will become a CPA, and the eligibility requirements also require you to be enrolled in a graduate accounting program. Additionally, the graduate program that you are enrolling in must be accredited by ACBSP or AACSP International. If you have already started your graduate accounting program, you are not eligible for these accounting scholarships.

You must be pursuing CPA certification, be a full time graduate student, and a United States Citizen to be eligible. Eligible non-citizens can also apply. In order to be an eligible non-citizen of the United States, you must hold a green card. It is also vital that you understand that in order to be eligible for the John L Carey scholarships for accounting that you can not have completed more than twelve semester hours in accounting or business courses while obtaining your under graduate degree.

If you are awarded a coveted Carey scholarship, you will receive $5000, which will typically be sent directly to your school for disbursement. The John Carey scholarship in accounting is considered to be renewable, so if you have satisfactory academic performance, and you will be obtaining another year of graduate study in the appropriate field, you can be awarded an additional $5000 for that second year.

Your application must be postmarked by April 1st, without exception. Once your application is received, a committee will review it, and will choose the ten winners who have shown the best academic achievement. Leadership qualities are also considered, as is the probability that you will enter the accounting field upon finishing your education. Winners are typically notified by August.

Again, the competition is stiff for these limited awards, but if you meet the requirements for eligibility, you definitely need to apply for this accounting scholarship. $5000 goes a long way towards helping to pay for an education, and these are funds that do not have to be repaid. Finally, even if you meet all of the eligibility requirements for the John Carey Scholarships in accounting, if you are an employee or member of the AICPA, or a family member of a staff member or employee, you are not eligible for the AICPA scholarship for accounting students.

ALA Scholarship

If you are a graduate student, and pursuing a Master’s degree in library and information studies, you will want to apply for the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program. Each year, there is approximately $300,000 available for the ALA scholarships that will be given to these graduate students.

The first thing that you need to know about the ALA library scholarship program, however is that it is only available to you if you meet all other requirements, and you are enrolled in an ALA-accredited master’s program. These programs are available at 57 Universities located in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Typically, you will be eligible for the library scholarship if you are enrolled at an approved school working towards a Master of Library Science Degree, a Master of Arts Degree, a Master of Science Degree, a Master of Library and Information Studies Degree, or of course a Master of Librarianship Degree.

You can apply for the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program at any time between October and March, and the deadline is March 1st. The application is submitted online, through the ALA website at www.ala.org. The application must be completed in full, including the personal statement.

You must also include three references and your official transcript from the school where you received your bachelor’s degree. Obviously, your transcript will have to be mailed, but it is important to realize that the ALA requires the school to mail your transcript to them, and it must have an official seal, and be in a sealed envelope – from the school.

The American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program does not just have one library scholarship. The program consists of multiple librarian scholarships that include the Marshall Cavendish Scholarship, the David H. Clift Scholarship, the Tom & Roberta Drewes Scholarship, the Mary V. Gaver Scholarship, the Miriam L. Hornback, the Christopher Hoy/ERT Scholarship, the Tony B. Leisner Scholarship, the Peter Lyman Memorial Scholarship, the Association for Library Service to Children Scholarship, the Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship, the Frederic Melcher Scholarship, the ASCLA Scholarship, the LITA Scholarship, the Christian Larew Memorial Scholarship, the LSSI Minority Scholarship, the OCLC Minority Scholarship, the Office of Diversity Scholarship, the Spectrum Scholarship, the FAFLRT Scholarship, and the ASCLA Century Scholarship.

Because you may meet the eligibility requirements for more than one library scholarship that is a part of the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program, the application that you fill out on the ALA website allows you to check the librarian scholarships that you want to apply for, and then to do so with the one application process, instead of multiple application processes. Each of the scholarships for library available through the ALA has different requirements for eligibility, with all having the same requirement concerning the Master’s degree program.

NASA Scholarships

If you are currently enrolled in college, in an Aeronautical Engineering Program, or you soon intend to be, you should consider and research the Aeronautics NASA Scholarship Program to help pay for your education. Among all NASA scholarships that are awarded for specific fields of study, these types of NASA Aeronautics scholarships award the highest amount of funds to help pay for the expense of the education that you are receiving. If you win a aeronautics scholarship, you must be admitted to an approved field of study by the fall after you win the award. You must also be attending a school accredited in the United States and be a citizen of the United States. The student must also show that there is a financial need in order to be considered, and must continue to prove this need each semester. You must also take the GRE exam, and have your scores submitted with your application.

Fields of study that are approved for the Aeronautics NASA Scholarships include electrical, energy and electronic fields, Aeronautical and Aerospace fields, and Engineering fields that include chemical engineering, computer engineering, civil engineering, materials engineering, systems engineering, industrial engineering, engineering science, and engineering mechanics, and studies in the fields of metallurgical and polymer. Computer science and physics under the mathematics field will also be considered.

A student who wins this award can opt not to participate in the summer internships if they so choose, however, if this is the choice that they make, they will not be eligible for the $10,000 stipend for those internships. Applications must be received between September and January, and awards are announced in April for the following fall semester, and all applications must be submitted online – hard copies are not accepted.

Aeronautics is a very exciting and lucrative field, but the cost of the education required for this field is very expensive. You should definitely apply for the Aeronautics NASA Scholarship as well as any other college scholarships that you are eligible for to help with these costs. Of course, the added opportunity to work for NASA at the NASA Center is also something to consider and is a ‘one of a kind’ experience that cannot be duplicated anywhere else.

Izaak Walton Scholarship

If improving the environment is the end goal, and you are planning to pursue an education that will allow you to do this, you will definitely want to consider applying for the Izaak Walton scholarship or the IWLA National Scholarship Program for environmental, sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA). The IWLA serves to protect soil, water, forests, and other natural resources in the United States, and with their Walton scholarship program, they hope to aid in the education of those who hold the same concerns and values as their members do.

If you are currently enrolled – or intend to enroll – in a program of study that includes forestry, wildlife, environmental sciences, natural resource management, parks and recreation, ecology, biology, zoology, or any other related fields; you may be eligible for the IWLA National Scholarship Program. Two Walton scholarships are available each year – one in each of two different categories. Each Walton scholarship program amount is $2500, and each winner receives an engraved plaque. Each winner also receives one year of membership in the IWLA.

The first category that the Walton scholarship is awarded in is the Chapter/Division category. In this category, you should have already won the IWLA scholarship in the past. You must be an undergraduate in an approved field of study, be a junior or senior, and have at least one semester remaining before you receive your degree.

The second category is for a person who is the child or an IWLA member, or a current IWLA member. The membership must have been active for at least one year prior to the application. The winner will be an undergraduate, a junior or senior, and have at least one semester left before graduation. If you have already won an IWLA National Scholarship Program award in the past, you must apply for the first category, as you will not be eligible for the second category.

If you are awarded a Walton scholarship from the IWLA, the fund must be used for tuition and fees, books, room and board, and other education related expenses. The payment of the funds can be made directly to you, or to your school. If you do win a Izaak Walton scholarship under this program, before you change your course of study, you must notify the IWLA first.

The deadline for applying for the Walton scholarship program is April 1st of each year. All applications must be complete, and must include an essay, a letter of reference, two letters of recommendation from a member of the faculty at your college, and be signed by your departments head. All applications must also be mailed and not submitted online. Awards will be based on numerous factors, including your understanding and knowledge of different environmental issues.

Due to the recent state of our environment, and future expectations, employment and career opportunities in the various environmental fields are expanding. If the environment and conservation of our natural resources matter to you a great deal, and you plan to get an education that will enable you to help in this area, you should contact the Izaak Walton National Scholarship Program for environmental as soon as possible and apply.

Morris Udal Scholarship

The Morris K Udall Scholarship awards, administered by the Udall foundation, are awarded to the new generation of Americans that are dedicated to preserve and protect their national heritage through studies in environment and Native American health and the tribal public policy. More than $15 million has been distributed till 2008 to the various candidates through (80) (eighty) annual truly unique scholarships and various Honorable mention awards. The objective of the program is to identify and prepare future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields including engineering, science, urban planning and renewal, health, justice and economics. The future Native American and Alaska Native leaders are also to be identified in Native American Health care and tribal public policy through this native American scholarship.

The Morris K Udall foundation was established in 1992 by the US Congress to honor the Congressman Morris King Udall. The main purpose of the foundation is to promote the natural resources, identify critical environment issues, develop better workforce to handle environmental issues and provide access to environmental education. The Foundation also develops and rewards Native American and Alaska Native professionals in health care and public policy. The Udall Trust Fund was set-up in 1994 for various initiatives including the Udall Scholarships, Internships, Environment Conflict resolution and Parks in Focus.

The Udall scholarship is awarded based in three categories:

1. To students who have demonstrated a commitment to careers related to environment. (non native Americans)
2. To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated a commitment to careers related to tribal public policy.
3. To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated a commitment to careers related to Native Health care.

The Morris K Udall Scholarship expects to award a whopping eighty (80) scholars in 2010 with up to $5,000 for various educational expenses. Additionally, fifty (50) Honorable mentions of $350 each would be awarded to sophomore and junior level college students. With such a large number of Udall Scholarships presented each year, everyone who fits the criteria should immediately apply.

The Udall scholarship is open for all US permanent residents that are pursuing full-time study during the 2010-2011 academic years and have a college grade-point average of at least a “B” or equivalent. The nomination of the students is done by the college or university – through the Faculty representative. Each institute can nominate six (6) candidates for the Udall scholarship. Thenomination materials are available on the Foundation’s website from September 2009 and the deadline for submission of nomination is March 2, 2010. The nomination can be done for all the three or any one of the above categories. Institutional nomination is done using the online registration process and the various nomination materials needs to be provided through mail at the Foundation office in Tucson.

“We are remembered for the way we treated other people” – these lines clearly state the objective of the foundation – and work towards the benefit and growth of others. The statement of the Udall scholar of 2008 – “this Udall Scholarship says to me that someone outside my tribe, outside my nation is saying that we see what you are doing, and we see that it is important; therefore, we want to help you the best way we know how.”  These lines clearly highlight how objectives are achieved and would be for years to come.

Benjamin Gilman Scholarship

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs – ECA (http://exchanges.state.gov) works towards enabling mutual understanding between the people of the US and the people of the other countries. This mission is accomplished through nternational education exchange programs with more than 160 countries. ECA has over 1 million program alumni around the world, including more than 40 Nobel Laureates and more than 300 current and former heads of state and government. The total investment done under the international exchange program in 2008 was more than $1.5 billion.

The Gilman scholarship for summer 2010 has been changed to a Pilot for the STEM fields of study. For the year 2010-11, 125 scholarships are to be awarded to the students studying abroad during the summer of 2010. Each study abroad scholarship will be up to $5,000 and the average Gilman scholarship award would be $3,000. The major criteria for application are as below:

1. Applicant should be receiving or would have been approved to receive the Federal Pell Grant – grant provided for the low-income applicants for education.
2. Applicant should be attending a program that is recognized in the US.
3. Minimum 28 days of study in one country (selected countries as per list).

 The applications are to be done online either in Oct 2009 or in April 2010. However the date needs to be confirmed on the website. The program’s objective is to assist students from a diverse range of colleges and universities including, but not limited to: two and four-year public and private colleges, Tribal Colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions and other Minority-Serving Institutions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. It provides scholarship opportunities to those sections and communities of the society that would have not visited any foreign country due to financial constraints. The program encourages diversity and hence one of the selection guideline is the diverse background of the applicant as well.

WV Promise Scholarship

The West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-State Student Excellence), administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission is a WV PROMISE scholarship program designed especially for the scholars from West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship program provides West Virginia high school graduates a scholarship to a state college or university in West Virginia or an equivalent amount to an in-state private college. The PROMISE scholarship program was begun by Governor Bob Wise and the Legislature in 2001. Annually the program distributes more than $42 million to the various talented minds of the state.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, established for monitoring the educational needs in the West Virginia state, manages the higher education institutes to ensure that the policies are implemented and the smooth functioning of the public policy agenda for the state’s four year colleges and universities. According to the US 2000 Survey, only 14.8% of West Virginia residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree – compared to 24.4% in the US as a whole. Providing various scholarship programs to ensure better access to education for the state students is one of the major objectives of the organization. One such scholarship is the WV PROMISE Scholarship and more than 9,000 students have benefited from this West Virginia PROMISE scholarship in the year 2008-09. The funds for the WV PROMISE scholarship are provided from video lottery and other appropriations.

The PROMISE scholarship requirements are that it’s available to all the High School graduates, Home Schooled students and college students (renewal) from the state of West Virginia. The WV PROMISE scholarship award for a student enrolled in a state institution of higher education shall be equal to the actual tuition and mandatory fee charges or resident students at the institution. Eligible 2010 high school graduates will receive annual awards valued at the lesser of tuition and mandatory fees or $4,750 at the West Virginia public or private college they choose to attend. The list of eligible institutes is available on the website. Out-of-state colleges and universities are not recognized and hence the institutes recognized by the scholarship are limited. The online application opens from November 2009 and needs to be completed before March 01, 2010. The selection process verifies the merit of the applicants and accordingly the deserving applicants are chosen. Various educational qualifications are included for selecting the recipients. The WV PROMISE scholarships can be renewed for eight consecutive semesters and can be transferred from one institute to another as well.

While nearly 73% of the West Virginia students graduate from high-school only 58% of the graduating seniors attend college for further studies. One of the reasons for the lower number is the financial overhead for attending college. Added to the fact that middle income group has limited opportunities for qualifying for low-income scholarships. The need to have the WV PROMISE scholarship for rewarding students is definitely there.

Robert Byrd Scholarship

The Robert C Byrd Honors Scholarship Program funded federally by the US Department of Education & administered by the various states, is monumental in terms of the number of Robert Byrd Scholarships awarded every year and one of the major programs that recognizes and rewards brilliant high school seniors and ensures excellence in education at high secondary level is achieved. The department provides the funds to the State Education Agencies (SEA) to be distributed amongst various applicants annually. The estimated program funding for 2009 is to be more than $40 million for more than 27,000 applicants to help pay for college expenses. Because of the sheer size of the Byrd Scholarship Program, students stand a decent chance of realizing one. If you fall into the Byrd Honors Scholarship criteria then apply without hesitation.

The US Department of Education (www.ed.gov) was created in 1980 with a mission to promote achievements and excellence in education and to prepare the US scholars for global exposure & competitiveness by ensuring equal access to education for all. The Byrd Scholarship Program is open to the permanent residents of the US only. Any full-time high school graduate accepted for enrollment at institutes of higher education (IHE) and with outstanding academic merit (various criteria) can apply for the Byrd Honors Scholarship program to the SEA at the state of residence. Even home schooled students are eligible at some SEAs. The entire application package with the details about the application process is available from the SEA only. The deadlines for the application processes are managed by the SEA individually. The scholarships are allocated by the counties of each state. There are various conditions including students attending military academy are not eligible and they are to be adhered to. Financial need is not considered as a selection condition. As the states are allowed to define their own selection criteria each state has its own application criteria. The average Robert Byrd Scholarship amount is $1,500 per applicant per year and is renewable for up to four years based on the academic progress. The amount totally depends upon the state, based on the annual funding done. The SEAs have to renew their participation for the award annually as well.

Army ROTC Scholarship

The Army ROTC Scholarship (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Scholarship) Program offered by the US Army, provides an excellent opportunity for bright students to attend one of the best leadership courses – the ROTC Program in the United States. The merit based eligible students can finance their college education while simultaneously working toward their commission as an Army officer. Four-, three-, and two-year ROTC scholarships are available to qualified students. High school seniors may be awarded either a four- or three-year advanced designee scholarship. College freshmen and sophomores can apply for either a three- or two-year Army ROTC scholarship respectively.

The United States Army offers the ROTC scholarships at nearly 600 colleges and universities that have or are affiliated with ROTC programs. In exchange for the full tuition, books and monthly stipend, cadets commit to serving either 4 years on active duty or 8 years part-time in the reserve or National Guard forces of the Army. The scholarship is provided based on the merit and not the financial need. The scholarships granted by Army ROTC are a great way for students to achieve academic success without dealing with much of the stress that college life entails. Scholarship cadets are able to attend college for little or no cost and at the same time benefit from the training and experience that ROTC programs provide.

The Army ROTC scholarship entitles its recipients to full-tuition assistance, as well as a textbook/fee allowance and a monthly stipend to cover the student’s living expenses. The ROTC scholarship amount varies but can go up to $18,000 per year. The amount that cadets on ROTC scholarships receive for their monthly stipend depends on their year in school, as shown below:

Being merit a based scholarship, the application criteria is stringent as it includes high SAT or ACT scores and requirements to meet physical standards. When cadets complete the ROTC course, upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. Serving US Army after the course completion is mandatory.
