    The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visual Arts is a state funded privately endowed educational institution established for the benefit of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its has a purpose to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, to encourage the study of the arts, there-by to enriching the lives of all who see it.

    VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists and their art, along with art history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline. Almost $5.5 million has been awarded to Virginia’s artists since the program’s creation over 75 years ago.

    St. Andrews scholarships are available through the University of St. Andrews, the third oldest university in the united Kingdom and located in Scotland. It is widely considered to be an acceptable alternative to either Oxford or Cambridge, both considered amongst the top colleges in the world. Because of the general prestige of the institution and its ability to turn out some of the world’s best scholars, the cost of the University of St. Andrews can be expensive. Fortunately in the past couple of decades the university has opened its doors making available a St. Andrews Scholarship for deserving students from a diverse background. Especially strong with regards to prestige is the University of St. Andrews standing in the international community. The university is widely regarded as being a top destination for students coming in from other countries to attend school at St. Andrews, and as a result it should not be too surprising that a number of St. Andrews scholarships have been established to meet this need.

    Amongst the international St. Andrews Scholarships available is the Chevening Scholarship Program which is specifically designed to fund international students who are attending study in the United Kingdom to get their post-graduate degrees. All applicants will need to be studying at the graduate level with strong academic performance, be interested in returning to their home country to help develop their people, be able to speak English well and be able to express clearly how their studies will help benefit their home country. This womans scholarship gives out from 1,000 pounds up to 3,000. In order to be eligible students must be females, be going to school for a post-graduate degree full-time, and all additional tuition due must be able to be paid. Though this program does not offer as much as the Chevening St. Andrews scholarship program, it does cut a decent amount of money out of the overall cost of a post-graduate degree, and students would be foolish not to try for a chance. All application materials are due no later than March 26 of a given year.

    The University of St. Andrews School of Medicine provides a university scholarship through the Danuta Richardson Medical Program. This fantastic program covers a student’s full amount of tuition costs while also providing a 12,000 pound yearly stipend for up to three years of education. Because the program is open to exceptional candidates who may begin school at different times, this St. Andrews scholarship has no set deadline and students should contact the medical department directly for full details. That being said, students are expected to have an exceptional record and be interested in research pertaining to biophotonics, immunology, virology, cancer biology, neuroscience, molecular genetics or health psychology.

    Every year Wingate St. Andrews scholarships are awarded, largely to post doctoral students, to those looking to continue their research and education. This medical scholarship is designed to fund all of or part of a research project, depending on a projected budget. In order to be eligible for this St. Andrews Scholarship students will need to be residing in and a citizen of the United Kingdom. Citizens of other EU countries may be eligible to apply if they have been residents of the UK for at least three years. All applicants must be over the age of 24 and be able to show proof of financial need. The deadline for this program is February 1.

While none of these programs fund undergraduate studies, they are an excellent source of funding for any student interested in pursuing graduate level education and should be considered sincerely as a source of potential funding. Apart from the act of providing funding for graduate students, each of these scholarship initiatives provides access to an incredible alumni network which will help support developing students. Further, each program provides basic necessities for those who have entered fellowship work.

    The Robert S. McNamara scholarship is both the oldest and most established World Bank Scholarship available. It is focused on providing financial support to students who are engaged in several specific research fields and will cover costs for a five to ten month period. All interested applicants should be under 45 years old while having already completed their coursework for the doctoral program they are enrolled in. Further, it is only available to researchers from one of the listed developing nations which the World Bank scholarship programs cover. It provides for books, database access, software needs, additional courses required and any seminars a fellow will need to better achieve their research goals. Fields which are covered by this World Bank scholarship include economics, health, education, and any other topic which is related to the developing world. Interested applicants will need to submit a research budget and awards will cover up to $25,000 in expenses. The deadline for applying to the Robert S. McNamara Scholarship is March 31, 2011.

    Looking now to the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarships Program (JJ/WBGP) it is clear that this program is a great source of funding for any student from a general World Bank member nation interested in graduate studies. From a total of 61,319 applicants, the JJ/WBGP has funded scholarships for 3,412 students and on average awards $33,000 to each recipient. Students who receive the awards can choose to attend school from a pool of more than 150 institutions. In order to be eligible for the program students must be from a World Bank member nation, hold a bachelors degree, not be from an industrialized nation and be in good health. Preferably students should be interested in economics, health, education or other topics related to the developing world. This particular program is available to students entering a master’s level program. Applicants will be weighed according to academic merit, professional experience outside of school and the importance of their selected study program. All application material is due no later than March 31, 2011.

    The final World Bank scholarship that is important to mention is the Japan Indonesia Scholarship program. It is funded every year by a grant from the Japanese Government and seeks to work with students entering PhD level studies. More focused than the previous two World Bank Scholarships, this program requires that applicants be residents of Indonesia, less than 45 years old and having maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4 point scale. While students should be enrolled in a PhD program and already have their masters degree, those applicants who hold a bachelor degree and show outstanding performance are encouraged to apply. This program fully funds three to four years of university studies while also providing a monthly allowance. Further, the Japan Indonesia Scholarship program provides money related to travel expenses to cover airfares to and from a chosen university. Unlike the other two major programs, this World Bank scholarship 2011 covers many additional fields of interest including biotechnology, infrastructure and urban development. The deadline for application materials is March 26 annually.

    If your an international student then highly consider the Commonwealth scholarships; here’s why. As an international student it can sometimes be difficult to find financial aid for attending college. Many bursary programs are available specifically to citizens of a given country, and are normally available through specific institutions. Scholarships, although being much more open and aimed at a broad audience, can sometimes be restrictive in who is awarded and what areas they may have come from. The Commonwealth Scholarship Program in sharp contrast is specifically designed with the international student in mind. Commonwealth scholarships are offered around the world through an organization called the Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan which was conceived and implemented at the 1959 Commonwealth education conference. Its goal is to establish scholarship programs in individual Commonwealth nations available to students from other countries.

    Though the Commonwealth scholarship is not available across the board for all member nations, it is available in 12 including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, India and Malaysia. Initially these programs were created to fund primarily students pursuing graduate studies but it has since been opened up in many countries to include undergraduate students as well. These Commonwealth scholarship programs are hotly sought after and considered highly competitive, so students should plan carefully before application and make sure they have provided the best information they possibly can to put themselves in the best light.

    In many ways, the application process for commonwealth college scholarships has advanced and simplified since 1959. For some countries, a single electronic application system is available for all interested applicants, though this has not been implemented in all nations equally. It is useful to know that there is no single commonwealth scholarship plan available, but rather these programs are designed and implemented by individual countries. Because of this, though easier now than in days past, the commonwealth scholarship programs are still rather complicated and students will need to take their time when reviewing scholarships they may apply to.

    Applications may be restricted to certain nations in the commonwealth, or they may be broadly available to all member states. Other programs may be available only for graduate or undergraduate students, and eligibility criteria will vary by specific scholarship. Further, it is also important to know that not all programs are scholarships, and that some are designed as fellowships which are a completely different category. The basic message in this is simple: review available programs very carefully and make sure that they are applicable to your interests and financial needs.

    Many of these scholarships by Commonwealth are offered through exchange programs, so an important step in gaining access to them is to first check with your university to see if such a program exists. If a students’ institution does not offer such an exchange program they will be ineligible for a number of the scholarships, though this should not stop them as there are many more that will still be available. A good example of such a program is the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship which, while prefers students be enrolled in an existing exchange program, accepts applicants from many different institutions. Students at a college who do not have an exchange program with a college in Canada may begin the process at home, encouraging their university to generate such an arrangement with the student’s chosen destination. Successful applicants to this specific program can receive up to $10,000 to cover travel, living costs and other financial needs while staying in Canada. While the 2010 awards have been given out already, the Canadian 2011 Commonwealth Scholarship Program is expected to announce a new competition for 2011 in the near future.

    Commonwealth scholarship programs are a useful way for international students to find financial aid to continue their studies abroad. It may require a little footwork on the part of the student, but the rewards can be enormous. Further, their legwork where exchange programs do not currently exist may facilitate future students in gaining access to these awards, so their efforts are important across the board.

    Again, it is important to remember that these programs are highly competitive, so students who apply should have a sincere passion for the work they are doing. Their applications should display their passions, and in all hopes they will find themselves awarded handsomely for their interests.

    The UNCF scholarships, or the United Negro College Fund Scholarships have raised millions to help minorities reach and graduate college, a goal that unsurpassed by any other scholarship besides the United States government. UNCF scholarships for minorities are plentiful, but two basic minority scholarships are listed here: UNCF General Scholarship 2010/2011 Academic Year, and the Oracle/UNCF Corporate Scholars Program 2010.

    The United Negro College Fund is the nation’s largest supporter of minorities for education. For over six decades, the UNCF grant scholarships for minority students  up to a thousand institutions, as well as professional training for faculty and administration. The UNCF scholarship directly supports 39 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as other schools who support minorities. The HBCUs focus primarily on African-American students, with an understanding and care for their growth, well-being, and future after college.

    Two UNCF scholarships for Your Consideration

    The UNCF General Scholarship 2010/2011 Academic Year offers a minority scholarship value of $5,000.00 USD to those given a grant. This grant is offered to a college student with a Grade Point Average of 2.5, and whose college is a member of a UNCF Institute. College freshmen, juniors, sophomores, seniors, and graduates can apply. The most common of the UNCF scholarships for minorities, several hundred applications come in months before the scholars are announced.

    All majors are open, but the application deadline is on Sunday, May 15 of the next academic school year (2011). Those who qualify and are interested can apply online for this particular UNCF scholarship. If there are other scholarships that a single college student believes he/she is eligible for, then he/she must separately apply for that scholarship grant through the ‘Apply Online’ process.

    A UNCF general scholarship application must be passed, which will then nominate passers for scholarship assistance. Once the application is completed, you will be matched according to the many specific programs for the 2010-11 academic school years at UNCF.

    The Oracle/UNCF Corporate Scholars Program 2010 offers scholarships for College juniors, sophomores, and seniors with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0, with a grant value of $10,000.00 USD.

    This particular scholarship applies to those majoring in Accounting, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Software Development.

    All students studying in UNCF Institutes, as well as HBCUs, are eligible, and can apply online before Tuesday, February 15 of the next academic school year (2011). They are eligible to participate in their paid summer internship at an Oracle location in Reston, Virginia or Redwood Shores, California for eight weeks. Once a student successfully passes the internship, they will be eligible to receive the $10,000.00 USD scholarship grant.

    Tips for Getting Approved for Your UNCF Scholarships for Minorities

    Depending on the various minority scholarships granted by the UNCF, there are still common requirements to be fulfilled. You must be a college student in a university with an official membership in the UNCF or a HBCU, and have financial needs that neither you nor immediate family cannot fulfill. Contact your university’s financial aid to get a full assessment of your needs. The financial aid director will continuously support and vouch for you throughout the application, so you must give complete and accurate information regarding your financial status.

    Be sure to notify all your professors, teacher’s assistants, and employees about giving their letters of recommendation. Inform them a way ahead of time, so that they can access your current situation and write their recommendation before the deadline. Always keep several photocopies of your documents, in case they get stolen, misplaced, or damaged throughout the process of getting your scholarship for UNCF. If you’ve completed your undergraduate degree and you have or will receive your master’s degree, why wouldn’t you go further and get your PhD at this time? Most of those who receive a master’s degree do not further their education to the PhD due to financial concerns. By that time, not only do they need to start making a living, but they are also tapped out in terms of paying for their education, and often have a slew of student loans to repay as well. You can continue on in school and receive your PhD, however, if you know how to find and win PhD scholarships. Here’s how.

    Start your search in your department at school. Most schools maintain lists of PhD scholarship opportunities by field and by your level at the school, and this makes it easier to narrow down the scholarships that are designed for PhD students. Apply for all of the PhD education scholarships that you are eligible for through your department.

    Look to field related organizations for scholarships for PhD students. Most non-profit and professional organizations have some type of PhD scholarship program, and some are quite lucrative. There is the possibility that you will have to be a member of the organization before you are eligible to apply, so you should actually start looking into these PhD scholarship program opportunities while you are getting an earlier degree – before you are about to enter your PhD course of study.

    Consider any minority group or groups that you may belong to, and look for organizations that exist for the purpose of supporting or promoting those groups. Most of these organizations will also have PhD scholarship programs. While many will have scholarships available for undergraduate, there are also many that have opportunities for advanced students as well.

    You also need to think in terms of research, so that you can really narrow down the field for your PhD scholarship search. Most PhD students will participate in some form of research through the University that they attend. Sometimes, just being a part of that research will get you a scholarship through the department at the school, and other times, it will simply help you to win outside scholarships for PhD students. Think very carefully about what types of research you would like to be involved with, and don’t be afraid to propose your own research project to your department head.

    The tighter you can narrow your field or specialization, the more likely you are to win PhD scholarships. When the field is tightened or specialized, the competition becomes less in most cases.     The American Psychological Foundation and the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology have combined to create graduate psychology scholarships for students in the field of psychology. Each year, the APF/COGDOP offers thirteen scholarships for research to these graduate students, with varying amounts.

    The APF and the COGDOP are two separate organizations. The APF or the American Psychological Foundation is an organization that exists for the purpose of providing financial support for research in the field of psychology. The organization has existed since 1953. The COGDOP or Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology has been in operation since 1963. This organization was formed in an effort to promote careers in psychology, and it allows members to discuss the field and to receive advanced research and education in the field.

    The graduate research scholarship fund offered by these two organizations awards varying amounts each year. It is also important to note that the fund is comprised of thirteen different psychology scholarships, which is why there are thirteen awards made annually. The amounts depend on how much is in the fund for each research scholarship. In 2010, one winner will receive a $5000 award through these two organizations, but the award is actually from the Harry and Miriam Levinson Scholarship Fund. Another graduate student will receive $3000 from the Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship Fund. Eleven other awards will be made in varying amounts from different programs within the same fund.

    In order to be eligible, you must be a student in a master’s program or doctoral program. If you are currently enrolled in a master’s program, however, it must be your intention to enroll in a PhD program in the future. The purpose of these graduate psychology scholarships for research is not to pay for your education, but instead to pay for the cost of research through your graduate program. Additionally, you cannot just opt to apply for the program. Instead, you must be nominated by your department head, and your department of psychology must be a member of the COGDOP.

    Because these research scholarships for psychology are used to cover the expenses of research, as opposed to the cost of education, you must also submit a research proposal, and this proposal plays a huge role in the selection of the winners of the available awards.

    The deadline for applying for the APF/COGDOP Graduate Research Scholarship is June 30th of each year. On this date, all materials must be submitted to the committee that will select the award winners, and failure to have all requested documents in by this date will make you ineligible for any of the awards. The materials that must be submitted include the application form, a letter of recommendation from your graduate research advisor, an outline of your thesis or dissertation, curriculum vitae, and an official transcript.

    John Carey Accounting Scholarship

    The John L Carey accounting scholarship is available for graduate students who are enrolled in programs of study that will bring them into the accounting field. Established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1969, the CPA accounting scholarship was created in honor of John L Carey, who was instrumental in the success and continuity of the organization.

    There are certain requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the John Carey graduate accounting scholarships. They are only offered to graduate students who already hold degrees in liberal arts, or to students who have degrees in a non-business field. There is a great deal of competition for these accounting scholarships, as only ten are awarded each year.

    While you will not be required to enter the field of accounting upon graduation, it is important to note that when the award winners are selected, that selection is based on the probability that you will become a CPA, and the eligibility requirements also require you to be enrolled in a graduate accounting program. Additionally, the graduate program that you are enrolling in must be accredited by ACBSP or AACSP International. If you have already started your graduate accounting program, you are not eligible for these accounting scholarships.

    You must be pursuing CPA certification, be a full time graduate student, and a United States Citizen to be eligible. Eligible non-citizens can also apply. In order to be an eligible non-citizen of the United States, you must hold a green card. It is also vital that you understand that in order to be eligible for the John L Carey scholarships for accounting that you can not have completed more than twelve semester hours in accounting or business courses while obtaining your under graduate degree.

    If you are awarded a coveted Carey scholarship, you will receive $5000, which will typically be sent directly to your school for disbursement. The John Carey scholarship in accounting is considered to be renewable, so if you have satisfactory academic performance, and you will be obtaining another year of graduate study in the appropriate field, you can be awarded an additional $5000 for that second year.

    Your application must be postmarked by April 1st, without exception. Once your application is received, a committee will review it, and will choose the ten winners who have shown the best academic achievement. Leadership qualities are also considered, as is the probability that you will enter the accounting field upon finishing your education. Winners are typically notified by August.

    Again, the competition is stiff for these limited awards, but if you meet the requirements for eligibility, you definitely need to apply for this accounting scholarship. $5000 goes a long way towards helping to pay for an education, and these are funds that do not have to be repaid.     Finally, even if you meet all of the eligibility requirements for the John Carey Scholarships in accounting, if you are an employee or member of the AICPA, or a family member of a staff member or employee, you are not eligible for the AICPA scholarship for accounting students.

    If you are a graduate student, and pursuing a Master’s degree in library and information studies, you will want to apply for the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program. Each year, there is approximately $300,000 available for the ALA scholarships that will be given to these graduate students.

    The first thing that you need to know about the ALA library scholarship program, however is that it is only available to you if you meet all other requirements, and you are enrolled in an ALA-accredited master’s program. These programs are available at 57 Universities located in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Typically, you will be eligible for the library scholarship if you are enrolled at an approved school working towards a Master of Library Science Degree, a Master of Arts Degree, a Master of Science Degree, a Master of Library and Information Studies Degree, or of course a Master of Librarianship Degree.

    You can apply for the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program at any time between October and March, and the deadline is March 1st. The application is submitted online, through the ALA website at www.ala.org. The application must be completed in full, including the personal statement.

    You must also include three references and your official transcript from the school where you received your bachelor’s degree. Obviously, your transcript will have to be mailed, but it is important to realize that the ALA requires the school to mail your transcript to them, and it must have an official seal, and be in a sealed envelope – from the school.

    The American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program does not just have one library scholarship. The program consists of multiple librarian scholarships that include the Marshall Cavendish Scholarship, the David H. Clift Scholarship, the Tom & Roberta Drewes Scholarship, the Mary V. Gaver Scholarship, the Miriam L. Hornback, the Christopher Hoy/ERT Scholarship, the Tony B. Leisner Scholarship, the Peter Lyman Memorial Scholarship, the Association for Library Service to Children Scholarship, the Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship, the Frederic Melcher Scholarship, the ASCLA Scholarship, the LITA Scholarship, the Christian Larew Memorial Scholarship, the LSSI Minority Scholarship, the OCLC Minority Scholarship, the Office of Diversity Scholarship, the Spectrum Scholarship, the FAFLRT Scholarship, and the ASCLA Century Scholarship.

    Because you may meet the eligibility requirements for more than one library scholarship that is a part of the American Library Association ALA Scholarship Program, the application that you fill out on the ALA website allows you to check the librarian scholarships that you want to apply for, and then to do so with the one application process, instead of multiple application processes. Each of the scholarships for library available through the ALA has different requirements for eligibility, with all having the same requirement concerning the Master’s degree program.

    If you are interested in entering the medical field in any capacity, you might want to know more about the armed forces health professions scholarship that will also net you a career in the United States Military. The Army, Navy, and Air Force all have health professions scholarship programs, referred to as HPSP, or AFHPSP scholarship for the Air Force, to help you pay for your education in a medical field.

    With the armed forces Health Professions Scholarship Program, you will join the service of your choice and you will enter that service as an inactive reservist. At that point, you will attend school to work towards your health care degree. While you are in school, you will be required to serve for forty five days each year. This requirement can be satisfied with weekends and holidays, so that it does not interfere with your education. For each of these forty five days, you will be considered active military, and you will receive pay and all other benefits afforded to military personnel for active duty. If you are required to serve the 45 days consecutively, this can be achieved during the summer months – between semesters. During the first two years of your education, this time will be spent in officers training, in most cases. For the last two years, this time will be spent at a military hospital.

    When you are selected for the armed forces Health Professions Scholarship Program, you enter the military as a Second Lieutenant in either the Army Reserve or the Air Force Reserve, or an Ensign in the Navy Reserve. You must also meet certain qualifications to be selected for the program. You must be a United States Citizen and suitable for military duty, and you must meet certain academic qualifications as well.

    Different branches of service offer different armed forces health professions scholarships for this program. Note that all HPSP scholarships are post graduate scholarships – for medical school – and they do not offer health professions scholarships for under graduate programs, although there are other military programs designed to pay for under graduate educations. Health professions scholarships available through the Air Force can cover three or four years of school. The Army health professions scholarships can provide funds for one to four years of college. If you are a winner of one of these scholarships, all financial expenses for your education will be met for the length of your scholarship. This includes tuition and fees, books, and equipment, and also includes a monthly stipend as well.

    Once you have graduated from your health care program, you will be expected to serve in the military. In most cases, when you agree to use the HPSP scholarship, you are agreeing that you will exchange one year of military service for each year that your education was paid for. The service that you are required to give while in school does not count towards this obligation. You do, however, get a promotion in the military when you graduate from college, if you were awarded the Health Professions Scholarship. If you are in the Army or Air Force, you will be promoted to Captain. If you are in the Navy, you will be promoted to Lieutenant. At that time, you will be moved to active status, and you will complete the required residency through the military – which pays a great deal more than residency programs outside of the military.

    With economic forces being uncertain today, think outside the box for a solid and dependable career in the armed forces. It’s not for everyone, but for some it’s a perfect fit. You may discover it could be the best educational move for you at this time. The armed forces have educational packages which are second to none – if this is the field of study you are interested in.
